EXACTLY the kind of video I need to see! 25+ years ago I bought an upholstery sewing machine, figured out how to work it, and did an acceptable job re-upholstering my boat. The boat is now long gone, but I have 17 other cars of my own. I'm just a hobbyist. My friends accuse me of running an indoor junk yard. I need new Jeep seats for my 1986 CJ7. It suddenly dawned on me I still have the upholstery sewing machine. Since I did the boat, there is now KZbin, Ebay, Amazon, etc so I'm learning all there is to know about my sewing machine, and I need to learn how to fix my Jeep seats, which I've been repairing the last few years with pool noodles and duct tape! LOL! So I'm gonna do this right. THANKS for this video and the others like it. You went over a couple of things that I said, "Oh, I remember figuring that out when I did the boat!" I never used glue (didn't know any better). I think I got the foam rubber at Walmart probably. I have learned a LOT and am gonna keep learning from videos like yours! I'm retired, and have no intention of working on anybody ELSE's stuff but it sure will be fun to make my stuff look better!

can you tell me the density of that foam youre using? i heard you say 1/2" thick scrim. but ive seen most upholsterers use a 50 lb on the seat areas and 100 lb in the bolsters. im about to order my foam for my seats ,very soon. i spoke to you yesterday about it. i want to turn a flat old spring seat into a bolstered end almost like like a bucket bench. The springs are very lofty still and i like how the spring seats feel. i just want to use thicker foam on the ends and maybe in the lumbar area for more contour and support. do you have any videos doing something like that? again, thank you very much , I look forward to watching more of your work.

Hi Rudolph, great video, one question …. Why didn’t you make the 2” pleats a bit bigger before sewing so that the finished pleat is actually 2” like the original ?
@oldschoolautoupholstery Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you! You are right, I add a little bit, 1/4" to the measurement because after the vinyl is added to the foam, there is a third dimension. The result is a finished 2-inch pleat.

Hi, Because of the year and make, I would think that you would need someone or an upholstery shop to make the seat covers up for you.

What kind of chalk do you use 🤔

I prefer the white chalk as the yellow chalk tends to stain white vinyl.

@@ashdown8208 Yep, like school chalk. for finer lines, I use white China markers on vinyl. Yellow and red leave stains.

Rule number 351. Never glue vinyl onto foam when backing it. The vinyl always shows up dips and flaws in the foam under it

can you tell me the density of that foam youre using? i heard you say 1/2" thick scrim. but ive seen most upholsterers use a 50 lb on the seat areas and 100 lb in the bolsters. im about to order my foam for my seats ,very soon. i spoke to you yesterday about it. i want to turn a flat old spring seat into a bolstered end almost like like a bucket bench. The springs are very lofty still and i like how the spring seats feel. i just want to use thicker foam on the ends and maybe in the lumbar area for more contour and support. do you have any videos doing something like that? again, thank you very much , I look forward to watching more of your work.
