@@carmenwells5528 I have plenty of stories about your Great Grandparents Wells as well as Melvin and Pat. I was at Evangel - then moved to Russia and worked for 700 Club (CBN) and then Hillsong Kiev. I am a musician too. I am trying to find a great link for you from CBN in the 1970s with Your grandparents Turner -Wells doing the leads in “I Wonder” written by your great -granddad Ronald Wells.

I was there, 50 years ago to see the beautiful Miss Texas, Phyllis George capture the crown at the Golden Anniversary Miss America Pageant. We met her on the Boardwalk before pageant night and she was just as lovely and charming in person as she was throughout her illustrious career in television. Seeing all those lovely former title holders onstage together is something I shall never forget, particularly the touching moment when the reigning Miss America 1970, Pamela Eldred, walked the runway with the lovely Miss America 1924 Ruth Malcomson. What a night that was and what an incredible life Phyllis George led, may she rest in peace. Thank you for posting this and helping us remember that beautiful night and the great Phyllis George.

She was an inspiration to many women in sportscasting. They all owe her for their career. Without Phyllis George having to deal with the constant sexism and pure hate, these women would not have a career. At least not in broadcasting. She was the first. A pioneer. A trailblazer. A big part of why THE NFL Today was the gold standard of pregame shows. A big part of my youth. RIP Phyllis George

And just 13 years later, Vanessa Williams, who was Miss New York, became the first black Miss America: only to resign because of this nude photo scandal. Suzette Charles, who was Miss New Jersey and the first runner-up, became the second black Miss America and finished out Vanessa Wlliams' reign.

OMG Bert Parks dancing at 1:22 - hysterical. Luv watching the pageants posted w.him hosting. Its so funny with all the times he hosted, he wasn't too good at ad-libbing esp. when the judges would hand him the final ballots out of order. The year Cheryl Prewitt won Bert said - "One of these 6 girls will become Miss America" - 3x - when he hadn't even read all the runner-up cards/placements.

Miss South Dakota was singing loud, flat and off-key. Miss Maine was quite good, and Texas was a natural born performer, easy to see why she won, she had undeniable charm and charisma. Way to go, Miss Iowa,, opening the door for future African American contestants. She got a big round of applause from the crowd, would've been exciting if she'd made Top 10, but overall this night belonged to the lovely Phyllis George.
