1971 Royal Navy Instructional film on two of the methods used to escape from a disabled submarine

Set partly at the Royal Navy submarine escape training Tank (SETT), where aspects of the escape procedure are explained in the classroom and demonstrated in the escape training tower.
These scenes are intercut with a dramatised scenario set onboard the fictional Oberon class diesel-electric submarine HMS Odysseus, crippled following a submerged accident. A group of survivors in one compartment make a 'rush' escape, flooding the compartment and leaving in rapid succession. In another compartment, isolated from the first, the survivors make a tower escape, leaving one at a time through an escape tower. Submarine escape suits are explained in some detail.
Preparations and the actual escape are shown in each case, the responsibilities of the senior survivor are listed, and drills to be followed on the surface are described. Ways of communicating with searchers are also discussed, and the procedures followed by shore authorities (known as 'submiss' and 'subsunk') when a submarine is known to be missing are mentioned briefly.
On the surface, the survivors are rescued by the Leander Class frigate HMS Cleopatra (F28).

Did the SETT in 1982 aged 17 . I can remember shaking with fear sitting in the classroom going through all the preliminary stuff prior to doing the actual escapes. I would love to do it again now I’m older and probably a little less fearful.

A friend of mine on the Osiris explained this procedure to me in 1988 when they ‘visited’ us on the Falklands; I was army. It was both exciting but horrifying too. We all decided we didn’t want to be submariners….😂😂

When I did the tank I preferd the 30 and 60 foot blisters where you came to the surface just wearing swimming trunks and a life jacket breathing out all of the time the 100 was ok 10 ft a second wearing an escape suit The temperature of the tank was similar to bathwater You received your monthly submarine pay the day you qualified at the tank

Did SETT in 98, came relatively late to boats (volunteer by the way), did one requal before going outside. First time did the 9 mtr lockout and free ascent - not fun, but the 30 mtr in a suit!!😂😂😂

I do so miss Cox'n Banks and his counting off routine! A popular item when we did SETT qualification and re qualification in the 1960's, and I recognise some of the crew members.

I joined the mob in 85 and was told at Raleigh that I would be going into submarines. Half our class of Oliver 48 were, VOLUNTEERS, to subs. There was no way I was going near anywhere near them and told my divisional officer that they could put me in DQs for as long as they wanted. I eventually got my way, as I was and still am not happy about being in confined spaces. I respect all submariners as it's hard work, not many port visits, more or less in defence watches all the time. They deserve the extra money. In fact they deserve a lot more. I can't believe that you have to pay for your food on board if your ship is alongside. WTF. When did that start?
