this episode inspired me to drive me '76 2002 across the country. (AZ to CT) it was the line at the very end: "enjoying the scenery and the long stretches of north america; there are worse things you could be doing with your time" i just want to say thank you. it was the best thing i ever did. (so far, still young and dont wanna limit myself) ps. the romans outro was actually really beautiful.

Eatinbritches isn't the m10 a 1.7 liter ?
@Eatinbritches
@Eatinbritches 8 жыл бұрын
Hamdan Alharbi The M10 originally was a 1.5L, but it was designed to be easily enlarged. The 2002 actually started with the "New Class", the 1500, 1800 and 2000 sedans gave way to the 1600-2 (1602) two-door, which then became the 2002. The M10 was used in various sizes in these models for the life of that line, the first two digits of the model name designates engine displacement. It would later be used in base E21 and E30 models in 2.0L, fuel injected guise. The M10 would go on to be the basis of some incredible motors. The block became the basis for the S14 in the E30 M3, and they had previously built a competition 4 valve version called the M12... which powered Brabham F1 cars, boosted up as high as 1400 HP. The M10 family imo is one of the best engines ever built.

As an e30 guy in the BMWCCA, I can confirm that this car is what as he says. Overall the stock form is not as fast as a 325i but its a great platform, like the e30, to build on as an autocross, track toy, or rally car. They are great little cars and I'd love to drive one someday soon. RCR, I want you guys to rereview the e30. Hell, even use mine as a review subject. Its 30 years old and has 300k miles on it and is about 80% original.

I love them little flap windows. My aunt Mary had a van when I was a kid with those little flap windows. My uncle Gary was disabled, so when I drove places with them I always got to sit in the front seat, and loved that little flap window. It was also helpful to vent their cigarette smoke, while not making them cold.

Been in the BMW community, and pre mid-90's BMW gearbox swap is an extremely common and easy thing, so it's not really a biggie. Some swap from auto to manual, others destroy manuals and swap to different manuals. There's limitless possibilities with these older models, they're basically car lego.

It took me 40yr of driving used American cars before I FINALLY bought a BMW that I had to restore to be considered a "nice" car again. 90% of the time I'm not even driving a BMW and my driving habits were 100% honed on American car. So when I say I have NEVER seen more unwarranted hostile action taken when I'm in my BMW compared to when I'm driving my daily Ford I'm not lying. People purposely will cut me off,pull infront of me,brake check me and overall be the EXACT drivers People accuse BMW drivers of being. Jealousy is an ugly look for all u. If u have issue with people based on the car they drive,u need mind ur business and take a look in the mirror. What's it matter to u how other people drive? If u wanna it to be ur business then BECOME A COP. I bet ur someone who thinks it's "ok" to ride the passing lane with a whole line of traffic behind u cuz ur "already going 10mph over the limit"

Over the years I've owned two of these ... of all the cars I've ever sold both of my '02s are in the top 5 of cars I wish I'd never sold. That list includes a heavily modified 1970 Porsche 914, the two '02s (a 75 and a 76) an 89 Toyota MR2 and my first car a 1969 Mustang Fastback. Of all of those I think the only one I'd really want to own again is the 2002 (maybe the MR2). I need to get my hands on another one of these. Soon.

@@waifuracer6516 Ok, I will admit that the modern ones (most of them, anyway, except for the low-end stuff like you said) are all very fun to drive, yes. But the "technology for technology's sake" that they incorporate these days just ruins the ownership experience with its *horrible* unreliability. If they could back off on that, and build stuff like they used to, they'd have some *seriously* amazing machines.

Little-known hack, you actually drive for Uber using any car you like. Nobody is checking what car you're in. You're your own boss and you're your own compliance officer! Your pickups might refuse to get in, if they actually care, but that's their problem, not yours.

In 1978, I had a 1975 2002 (so, just a "used car" back then), and it was the best car I've ever owned (wrecked by a little old lady in a Buick in Florida), until last year, when I bought a 1974 2002 and fixed it up to look and drive just like the one I used to have. Can't wipe the stupid grin off my face every time I drive it. This winter the engine gets rebuilt with higher compression pistons and a "performance" cam -- 150 HP in a 2300 pound car. That stupid grin will get even bigger. Thanks Mr. R for this video -- please come and drive mine sometime, I live in PA not far from you.... BTW, in PA, the insurance for "antique" cars is super cheap, as long as you don't drive more than 5,000 miles a year.

lptomtom. how so? its only a classic because of its enthusiast history, but an untouched automatic anything simply isnt an enthusiast car. a great car is defined by what owners do with them and the world is littered with cars that are not great cars simply because they never inspired anyone to do anything but commute.

DrewLSsix well only 2000 or so of the 2002tii were made, making that version sort of a classic out of the box due to its rarity. Lots of guys who drove the car back then would have said it was just fine the way it was and why the hell did you swap or change anything

The guy that owned the pawn shop in my hometown had one of these when I was growing up. I drove past the shop the other day on the way to visit my mom and saw it parked next to a newish 3 series and I couldn't believe how much better the 2002 looked. It's honestly sad how ugly modern bimmers are by comparison.

@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix 8 жыл бұрын
Kuddlesworth NA hahahahaha😂 you are obviously a fan boy, a fanboy and not an enthusiast that is, an wnthusiast KNOWS what the issues are with their cars and you are apparently ignorant. MGBs have a well earned reputation for being poorly assembled out of poor materials, the archetypal fantastic car/horrible piece of shit that defined the two sided coin of the sportscar mold.

They're known as less than reliable. On the other hand I see more Mgb's on the roads where I am than American/Italian/German cars from the same era! The ones around now are really well looked after, and presumably drive well. So yeah he probably drove a shitty one, or drove one a while ago. (factboy here)

Personally mine has never broken down. I drive mien regularly, service it ever 6000 miles, grease my points twice a year and check my oil all the time. They are very popular cars and they are very old. I think just because there are lots of them still they tend to get a bad wrap. In terms of reliability an MGB will be more reliable then a BMW simply because it's a simpler car. Less stuff to go wrong and it's not exactly under much strain. The gear box isn't under any stress and neither is the engine. As long as you loob it up and maintain everything the engine should never die. The engine burns oil and mine especially did. I took a trip around Scotland and it burned about an engine full of oil doing it. Still ran perfect though and I just kept topping it up. The rear drum breaks get dirty though and need cleaning nearly every service.
