This 1972 Chevrolet promotional film, titled " Chevy Vans ", was sent to the Chevrolet car dealerships to be used as an in-house Sales and customer training film. The film highlights technical aspects and features of the new model year. If you look up a different film I posted, titled "1974 Chevy Selling Monte Carlo ", you can see a rare glimpse of the film cartridge viewer that was used at the dealership where the customers and personnel were to view these films. The machine was made by Technicolor and called the " Chevrolet Mini Theater System "
This film came from my personal collection. This film was not downloaded from any website and is not reused content. This restoration is my work. The restoration process started with removing the super8 film from the Technicolor Cartridge. After removal the film was cleaned, repaired, and spooled onto a standard film reel. Next the scanning to digital process was performed on the Lasergraphics Scanstation motion picture film scanner in 2k resolution. This film was very red without almost no color left. The extensive color correction was performed in Davinci Resolve. Finally, the film was converted to MP4 format for uploading to KZbin.

This generation van sold so well for GM, that they had to add a second production plant in the mid 70's. An existing GM shock and radio components plant, located in a suburb of Toronto, was expanded (second story paint shop) and converted into vehicle production for the start of the '74MY as a sister plant to the Lordtown (Ohio) van plant. As vehicle production evolved into the 80's the Canadian plant built the cab only ("chop van" or "cutaway") along with the diesel (first year was 1982) and the extended (stretch) vans exclusively along with the more popular 110" and 125" wheelbase panel and passenger vans.

the sliding door is so much more practical. Yet for some reason, all Chevy vans come standard with swing out doors and you rarely ever see a chevy van with the sliding door. I hate my swing out doors. It is the worst feature of my 2009 Express.

Your comment made me think of an alternate universe where Pontiac went headlong into the van craze by making a sporty street van version of the Chevy van. The ad copy would probably go something like this: "Introducing for 197# the new 'Trans Sport' from Pontiac; the first van to have Pontiac style, comfort, and take charge performance. It packs Pontiac's 2 bbl 5.7 litre (350-CID) V8 as standard equipment. A range of optional V8 engines are available, manufactured by various GM divisions, including Pontiac's 4 bbl 6.6 litre (400-CID) and 7.5 litre (455-CID) V8s. These are mated to a standard fast shifting Turbo Hydramatic™ automatic transmission and standard Positraction™ rear differential. No street van should be without Pontiac's Radial Tuned Suspension™. No Trans Sport is. Using computer selected springs, firm shocks, large anti-roll bars, and special high performance steel belted radial tires, this is one van that's made to haul more than just cargo. With bold Super Graphic™ decals, standard sport seats, standard Formula steering wheel, standard Rally instrumentation, standard heavy weight cut pile carpeting, standard Rally II wheels, available Snowflake wheels, available Custom Interior with center console, available Trans Am inspired aerodynamic body mouldings, available Delco AM/FM/CB stereo radio, and many more available styling, luxury, and convenience features available from the factory and your Pontiac dealer, this is one van that's as individual as you are. Trans Sport by Pontiac, 'The Great Van'. Pontiac strikes again."

Most tradesmen could go years without needing Chevy’s bigger doors in back and the sliding door, but it makes a great selling point. The front end they say is easier for service, and it looks so much better. Didn’t Ford copy this in a year or two?
