Bill Boddy's review of the XJ12 in "Motor Sport" said something like: "Owners should only open the bonnet to admire the machinery. On no account should they touch anything".

My favourite car ever. Unfortunately my pockets will never be deep enough to afford one bar a lottery win 👍

I had a S1 XJ12 in the early 80's and never really had any issues other than rust!😂 The carbed V12 is not a complex engine, it just has a lot more cylinders than most. You should see under the bonnet of a later injected version!😂😂 Those Strombergs strangle the engine somewhat and a Weber conversion really opens it up but it's a pricey conversion. As mentioned in the video, the Lucas OPUS ignition suffered from the overheating of the amplifier unit being badly positioned in between the V. I had a chance to buy a mint S3 V12 coupe in the mid 80's for £5k but passed on it as I decided I really wanted a ragtop which was a big mistake. Even then the roadsters were fetching £15-£20k and there's no way I could have afforded one!😂

Personally I’ve always loved the coupe, the tag top never appealed me at all, neither have Ferraris or Maseratis .

One of my neighbours had one in a beautiful shiny maroon with light tan hide interior back in 1972 and it only came out of his garage once or twice a year. My old man thought he was nuts as it wasn't fashionable back then but it was a minter and would be worth a fortune today. I often wonder what happened to it as it literally could be still in the same garage.

I actually prefer steel wheels with pressed stainless hubcaps

Why cant you mic him up properly. You can never understand what he's mumbling about. All the other guys who do these videos are clear and easy to understand!

Totally right that coupe looks just daft, no wonder there’s big money in converting these ‘buses’ into convertibles

I know Derek is the face of mathewsons, but be nice to see just the car rather than him trotting out the same old stories, it's basically Derek the whole video.

What is the chrome rectangular thing above the V12 badge on the rear ? I've never noticed that before on other S3 e-types . I remember when you could pick up the 4.2 S2 2+2 for couple grand , my m8 was selling his for 2k said I could have it for £1500 , it wasn't a rot box , wasn't mint either, but it was tidy, but I didn't buy it because until very recently I always thought the 2+2 looked ugly,, during the late 70s & 80s even the regular S2 could be found for under 5grand , I had a lot of saloons, S-type my favourite, A mk10 , was like driving an aircraft carrier around London did under 10 mpg ,and petrol was cheap in the 80s , I couldn't afford to run one today. I've had V8 yanks with better mpg. A couple of XJ6 S1 ( I still really like the look of those ) and a whole bunch of XJ6 S2/S3s . I did love a jag , most S2/3 i payed under £500 & decent condition too! just don't see them around anymore except on TV shows like this .

@@kevwhufc8640 That's a chrome air vent above the V12 badge. It's on all the S3 2+2's I've ever seen but not the roadsters.

Enzo was speaking of the original and only proper E type, the S1, later models are the obese versions for the US, ruined the aesthetics.
@roystonvehicles912926 күн бұрын
Yes, I don't think he would have said it about the v12 coupe, styling was criticised in period and ever since.

Enzo Ferrari couldn't produce anything as beautiful?......do me a favour
@kevwhufc8640Ай бұрын
Apparently enzo himself said the S1 roadster was the most beautiful car he'd ever seen . When they came out they were definitely one of the best looking motors in the world. And the fastest for a while. I don't know when they came out, but I've always thought the dino one of the prettiest cars ever made. But not really a Ferrari fan tbh , I'd love a shelby mustang the fastback classic model. But I also love the 60s mini cooper s ,, Most brands have models I like and don't like, like most people I guess , we all love cars & have different opinions

The convertible is lovely, the coupe is awful. That back end is just wrong, like Clarkson said about the Crossfire, "looks like a dog having a s..."

The 2+2 is not pretty. The original coupe is beautiful.
@stephenwright3788Ай бұрын
Had the 2+2 been brought out as the original design people would still have loved it. But the series 1 coupe is the best. They should of kept it going with a V12
@phils2180Ай бұрын
The 2+2 was in response to the American market which took the Lion's share of E Type production. The S1 coupe is much prettier. 👍
