WOW!!!! I remember when I was a kid, whenever I saw a Grand Prix, had to look at the badging to see if it was a Model J. On only one occasion, did I actually see an SSJ. It was a '72, and it was white and gold. I never forgot it. Never saw one again. What a thrill to see this today!!!

Absolutely I have said the exact same thing many times. GM should of dropped Buick or GMC and kept Pontiac being it was their performance division. GMC is just a higher trim level Chevy and Cadillac could of replaced Buick.

I remember seeing the ad for this when they were new but I have never seen one ln real life, and I'll bet this is as close as I'll ever get. I love these GP's but every time I see one I'm reminded of the loaded '69 low milage 'little old lady' owned 400/4-speed GP that I had pass on (FOR $2,800!!!!) in the early '90's. I'm still kicking myself but with 3 little kids at home what are you gonna do. Priorities! Love this video Lou!

Wow….. I worked in the body shop of a large Pontiac dealership throughout the 70’s and 80’s. Loved the Grand Prix!! I noticed how meticulous the owner handled his amazing car. When he shut the trunk lid and drivers door, he very carefully put his finger on the trunk lock and door handle. And, when opening the hood, he was very careful to only touch the very edge of the hood as needed. The owner “gets it”! My compliments to the owner!

Pontiac realized shortly after its introduction that the Grand Prix was not going to be successful on a full sized platform. The decision was reached to give it its own unique platform for the 1969 model year. Bill Mitchell was very impressed with Duesenberg automobiles, especially the styling of the boattail roadsters, thus the front and rear styling you pointed out, Lou. It also influenced, actually Pontiac outright copied model designations, Model J, etc. The results were quite striking, and successfully rescued the Grand Prix, as sales more than doubled in 1969. This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare car. Thanks for capturing it.

My first car was a 1972 SJ-455. Picked it up at a dealer in Galt Ontario in 1973 as a theft recovery. It was at the back of the lot and the dealer helped with getting it from the insurer and as it had some damage and an engine issue it was pretty cheap. However by the time I got my licence in 1974 she and new paint and the engine was rebuilt and ready to go. It was the coolest car in the lot at high school for sure. I resent years I've been thinking I should get one again, maybe one day. I do know one thing & that is while these have great style and lines ETC. They are a body mans nightmare... It's also to bad the the SSJ's never actually had a Hurst shifter - would have looked so cool with a set of Lightning Rods....

My 73 SJ was triple green, British Racing Green Imron paint, green interior, and green landau vinyl top, with the 455 and positrac. The lady that sold it to me said, "It will scoot!".

Lou, another gr8 Pontiac! Its interesting that [I believe] AMC was the only other car company to adopt [copy?] the wrap-around style drivers cockpit-dash for the '71-'74 Javelins. Quite similar to the Grand Prix front interior.

1972 is the beginning of the end of Vintage Muscle cars. Chrysler put a few big blocks but car manufactures started detuning engines to meet new Federal emission standards and pressures from the insurance industry. To replace the horsepower, some manufacturers started dressing up cars. This one here is a beauty.

Hey Lou U are the man... This is one sexy machine... The GP of this generation were the hottest muscle cars in the game... Tell me that things doesn't look like it's gonna fly or like it's hovering like a B52 or something... Did DeLorean have any influence in this design because I see hints of genius...

Stunning car but I prefer the 73 Olds in white. Im thinking the white would be nice on the GP SJ as well. The rotating bucket seats and dule-gate shifter were a couple differences on the Oldsmobile. Maybe its due to Shelby using the blk/gold combo on the hertz Mustang abd Olds doing the white/gold combk since 68.

Super nice car. One question I had about the car was “Did it have an 8 track player and if it did, where was it located?” I have seen brochures of the ‘72 Pontiacs and they showed the player at the back of the console over the transmission hump in the rear seat. Just curious. Thanks.

Yes, if you had the center console, the 8-track was placed behind the console. If you had a bench seat, it was placed in front below the center of the dash.

I'm pretty sure that the '71 Hurst GP was the first car to have a factory landau or half vinyl roof. The Eldorado's followed in '72; in '73, the Colonnade formal-roof coupes got them, and then they were everywhere. The black exterior is much better than the white. I had a plastic GP model in brown--so 70s. To me, these are Peak Pontiac.

A very rare and beautiful car. This was the last year before bumpers grew and the last year for this body. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this car off of the midsized Tempest/Lemans/GTO platform and NOT THE full size Catalina/Bonneville platform? It appears to have only the bare minimum speedometer and fuel gage with a clock. There are no other instruments or tachometer, which is a poor decision by Pontiac and Hurst.

Yes, the '68 GP was the last one based on their full-size chassis. The original buyer or dealer didn't ask for the gauges. Back then, most options were a la carte, and most everything was optional.

Little bit of work you be surprised how fast these cars can be. My uncle had one in the late 70s while in the Military and spent tons of his officer pay on it and man what a fast all black ride It actually did seem possessed by something evil especially at about 150 and screaming 😱 like a banshee. Actually scared me plenty of times

Lou, I owned a 1970 SSJ with the 455. That was the last year of the high compression and it was rated 370hp. What is this particular GP rated? It would have the lower power due to the need to run on regular gas as mandated for all GM engines. I am somewhat of a Grand Prix fan and always thought the 71 and 72 were the best style with the upright grille, etc. But the 63 is still my all time best design. Did the Hurst variants have a higher output?
