Great to see you talking about Brazilian music! I always wonder how much of our music you rock experts know. This is a great and important album and it's influenced by The Beatles, folk and progressive rock. You should hear some Clara Nunes, one of the best Brazilian 70's discographies. Thanks for your work!

Walker has without a doubt the best and most interesting musical career in Pop Music (and by Pop Music, I mean not just Pop, but Rock, Folk, Soul, Funk, Rap, Hip-hop etc). Almost no one has the balls like he had to do something like _Tilt_ , _The Drift_ and _Bish Bosch_ .

@@apollomemories7399and _Soused_ , but _Soused_ is almost an epilogue to everything he's done late in his career, especially after _Bish Bosch_ where we have an avant-garde epic like "Zercon". Credits to him for possibly being inspired by Lou Reed (one of the few artists closer to Walker's experimentation, i.e. _Metal Machine Music_ and _Lulu_ ) and making an unconventional collaboration with a metal band as his epitaph.

Really enjoying the podcast thank you. I have had a theory for a while that 1972 might just be THE peak year for musical culture, creativity and releases across so many genres. There was just so much going on all at once its insane. If I had more time I would try and compile the master list of everything relevant that came out and write a book arguing my theory. But for now happy to have these experts with such great expansive tastes do a lot of the work for me.

Scott Walker also did an album called SW sings songs from his TV Show that was released in '69 between Scott 3 and 4. Terry Callier omg we need a new Stephen Wilson remix! Also Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo du Cotanou 'Dahomey' is one of the best albums of that year! Terry was never a big hit-maker but he had so much style and musicality. Terry retired from music to take up computer studies. His music is inspirational. A true Americana idol. He died from cancer aged 67. Gilles Peterson played his music for me on World WIde FM not too long ago.

As good as Clube da Esquina is, Milagre dos Peixes by Milton Nascimento (and possibly the album Minas too) is imo the best brazilian album ever and one of the best albums ever in history. Milagre dos Peixes is a masterpiece in my eyes, it's extremely experimental, but also quite catchy and beautiful. It's a culmination of Milton's experimentations here and there while still keeping his pop sensibilites as arguably the biggest brazilian pop star of the time.

@@apollomemories7399 Milton is one of the most well known Brazilian artists, it wasn’t Peter that put him on the map though, it was Wayne Shorter that put him on the map worldwide after he appeared on Wayne’s 1974 album Native Dancer, he then collaborated with many artists after that and was signed to Warner Brothers in the 80’s, his 1994 album “Angelus” is the album where he collaborates with many people including Wayne Shorter, by Pat Metheny, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette Jon Anderson, Jmwes Taylor and Peter, where they sing a duet, he’s one of the most well known Brazilian musicians and has been for many years, along with João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, he’s 82 now, he was already well known by many musicians. The Coube da Esquina album is named after the musical movement he started here with Lô Borges in the late 60’s.
@apollomemories7399
@apollomemories7399 11 күн бұрын
@@sspbrazil I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I'm talking about global exposure and certainly not the confines of a very low level selling album in 1974 or extremely localised releases such as Coube da Esquina. It was specifically his duet with Peter Gabriel that bolstered his global exposure. Being well known by many musicians is albeit a good situation but that simply does nothing for any artist's commercial sales. He might have been signed to Warners in the 80's, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world was familiar with him. And what sort of quantities of albums were James Taylor or Jon Anderson selling in the early 90's compared to Peter Gabriel? My guess is about 5% at best. Prior to the Gabriel collaboration there's simply no way he'd have been as well known as João Gilberto or Gilberto Gil, at least from a UK or European perspective which also greatly inflences Australasia, too.
@sspbrazil
@sspbrazil 11 күн бұрын
@@apollomemories7399 you can disagree all you want, but it was Milton’s appearance on Wayne Shorter’s album that gained him world wide recognition, not just with musicians, but also music listeners, after he appeared on that album he collaborated with many artists before recording that duet on his album with Peter, he collaborated with Carlos Santana in and they played together at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982 and 1988, he did a duet with Paul Simon in 1988, there is a nice live version of it on KZbin, he also worked with Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind and Fire, Cat Stevens, Sarah Vaughan and a bunch of others before doing that duet on his album with Peter in 1994. Peter never signed him to his Real World label either, Peter started his label in 1989 and was signing mostly African artists and trying to scoop up as many world artists that he could, the roster expanded to artists from different countries over time, but he never got Milton though because Milton was already on a major label and was already recognized worldwide, not just among musicians, but music listeners, one of the reasons Peter did that duet with him was because of the influence he already had in music and that was around the time Peter was collaborating with many international artists, some of which he would scoop up for his label. That song may have introduced you to Milton, but many people already knew him well before that song. Also, the album is called “Clube da Esquina” (Club on the Corner) you misspelled Clube, that was a pinnacle album for him here in Brazil and the musical movement of the same name he helped to create here is what caught the ear of musicians like Wayne shorter and others, the fact that both Tim and Steven know this album well, shows you the reach he has had and before his collaboration with Peter.
