The spearing incident involving Cashman apparently happened just after the 35:40 point of this video (1st period). You see him make some kind of move toward Sterner, as the camera follows the puck. When the whistle sounds, the camera returns to Cashman, who has lost his glove and stick. He seems dazed and retrieves his glove from over the boards, wipes his mouth, then mimics shooting a pistol at Sterner, before exiting the ice for the Canadian bench.

And you can see when the period ended when Phi Esposito started and the other Canadians retaliated after Cashman got speared to his mouth cutting his tongue. That's what happens when you mess with Canadians, if fact those referees Kompalla and Baader should be ashamed of themselves for screwing the Canadians, even at Moscow they kept screwing them by penalizing the Canadians too much. Now I started to wonder where those NHL referees today get their incompetence from.

He hits Sterner after the whistle, that's what is happening. You clearly hear the sound of the whistle for offside at 35.39, he hits Sterner at 35.41. There is no reason for Cashman to do that, the ref stopped the game two seconds ago, but still he does a high hit with his stick held high, if you care to notice. No reason, just plain malice and stupidity. If he had swallowed his fucking tongue, it still had been his own damn fault.

The second of two and it actually was in the middle of the Summit Series. The Canadian leg of the series was played with two wins for the Soviets, one for Team Canada and one tie (3-7 ,4-1, 4-4, 3-5). The bad temper of the Canadiens is partly explained by this. They were heavily criticized in Canada, booed of after the forth game. The Canadien press and public had before the series been sure that Team Canada would win the series 8-0 or 7-1. Losing to Swedish amateurs would have been a catastrophe. The tie was bad enough, that's why they made up so many lies and myths about the game, knowing well that very few canadiens ever should be able to watch the game. When Team Canada won the series, it was forgotten for the time being. But this game, the 17th of september 1972, is without any doubt the start for great migration of Swedish hockey players to the NHL.

Prior to the 4 games in Moscow, which means the second half of the Summit Series. There were 8 games against the USSR in total. The first 4 games were played in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver. Then the other 4 were all in Moscow. In between these, Canada played Sweden twice in order to get used to Olympic-sized rinks and also European-style team work. This, I think, helped to improve the Canadian Team for the 4 remaining games in Moscow.

@@clubhouseme There is only one way to determine a men's world champion: the World Championships. Canada's won it seven times since 1972. That's a good amount, but definitely is not the most: Russia/USSR (16 times), Czechia/Czechoslovakia (10 times), and Sweden (8 times) have won more world titles. And before you respond with the usual "Canada doesn't send its best players because the NHL playoffs are still going," you can say the exact same thing about those other countries.

This is the production by the Swedish Broadcasting Cooperation, SVT. But how can there be this wonderful copy with all the enviroment noise, but no commentators? In the end the name of the commentators are even displayed. At the time, Lars-Gunnar Björklund and Roland Stoltz, was the most famous pairing of hockey commentators in Sweden. It would have been fun to hear them, but I actually prefer this. This is pure hockey and it's fun to experience, especially as nobody knew then but we know now that it actually was a very important game with historic significance. Nobody could have known that then when it only was an exhibition game for Canada on the way to Moscow.

It's curious that Canada is taking high hits on the Swedes all night. What prompted this tactic? I know Canada thought it was tougher but international hockey was more skating and passing. To me it is impossible that players like Hadfield and Cashman were picked over wonderful skaters like Keon or Sanderson. Also curious is that Canada gives late high hits all night. The Cashman hit is clearly a second or two after an offside. Then Canada reacts so viciously to the Swedes who only do what I would do on a late hit and that is offer up a little lumber. The real problem was the way the game was being played in the NHL in 1972. The NHL officiating was way behind the times and allowed this junk to happen night after night in NHL games. Is this game what prompted the term "Chicken Swede" in the NHL for years. I think "Loonie Canadian" might be a more accurate term.

They played the very young guys such as Tallon, Guevremont, Martin and Perrault and some of the others who had not done well vs the Soviets such as Hadfield, Seiling and Awrey (maybe in hope they would improve). The 2 Swedish games were never broadcast on TV in Canada, only on the radio. I read Harry Sinden's book after the series and he told how dirty the Swedes were and how these 2 games helped Canada come together. Imagine my surprise when I see this? Canada's fringe players like Goldsworthy, Cashman & Hadfield were out of control. It's almost comedy to watch them skating around like they were rock stars. Canada couldn't play these guys against the Soviets because they'd be in the penalty box all night. As for Sweden being dirty, watch it yourself. Cashman is the dirty player. Cashman just got the wood he deserved. And my favorite part is watching Hadfield go berserk at the end. And he seriously wondered why Sinden wouldn't play him against the Soviets.

Dennis Payne Goldsworthy was nuts in this series. I don't know if he played the same way for the North Stars, I think he was more of a scorer, but Team Canada had a bunch of all-stars and guys like Goldsworthy were told they had to play more physical because they didn't have a lot of checkers. So Goldsworthy played like a madman. It was the same with JP Parise whom I love as an Islander fan, but some guys were forced into a different role than what they were used to in the NHL and struggled with it. What people forget is that hockey especially NHL hockey was a physical game and it would have been suicide for Canada not to try to play physically and just let the Soviets just skate circles around them. It is the same with basketball when a team faces a run and gun team, they don't try to play at the same pace, that is a recipe for losing. When Duke played UNLV in the early 90s, they had to slow the game down and Laettner had to get in their heads. When Duke won, no one said they cheated. They had to play that way to win.

Cashman was not a fringe player. He was good at forechecking and digging the puck out of the corner for Phil Esposito with Boston. Swedish players hooked and slashed, and speared but concealed it better than Canadian players. Cashman might cross check or check you hard into the boards but I can not remember him high sticking players. Sterner got a high stick called near the games end. Ref. called it roughing. The high stick on Cashman was a chicken move of fear.

Well, it was broadcasted to a large TV audience in Sweden. Everybody had access because Sweden only had two channels at the time, both public service. I should say that most people watched the broadcast, because the national team Three Crowns was a really big deal in the 70's. A deciding game in the world championships 1970 against the Soviets had 82% of the population viewing, still a record for a Swedish broadcast of anything. So there was a great interest in hockey, there's no doubt about it. But these games were advertised as exhibition games, friendlies, and it was more then a month until the Swedish hockey season should start. The Summit Series wasn't that big of a deal in Sweden as in Canada, the US and presumably in the Soviet. I don't know how many spectators there was in Johanneshov that evening, but I suppose many just chose to watch from home. There was big headlines in the tabloids, in fact in all the newspapers the next day. Canada was written off as a bunch of goons and maniacs. I think that was a pretty fair reaction. This is a very significant game in Swedish hockey history, because the Swede lost their respect and awe for the Canadien pros. Eight of the Swedish player on the ice in this game, played in the NHL och WHA within some years: Börje Salming, Inge Hammarström (Toronto Maple Leafs, NHL 1973), Tord Lundström (Detroit Red Wings, NHL 1973), Anders Hedberg, Lars-Erik Sjöberg. Curt Larsson, Mats Lindh (Winnipeg Jets, WHA 1974, Lindh signed on 1975) and Thommy Abrahamsson (New England Whalers, WHA 1974). If the Canadien team tried to scare the Swedes, they really didn't succeed.

They were nuts from the start. They thought they could scare the Swedish team into submission since the Swedes had been pale the night before. But the Swedes had regrouped and lost a bit of the awe the had had for the professionals from the homeland of hockey.

@@darthrevan6171 Just to clarify: none of the players in this team were pros. I understand that you mean Thommie Bergman and Juha Widing who were the only Swedish players in NHL at this time, and none of them played this game. Since the league wouldn't start for these players until 22 October, they really weren't in great shape.

The Canadians played with highsticks and foul tricks. Why? Because they knew we could beat them.
@hassetagesson6811
@hassetagesson6811 Жыл бұрын
They didn't think the Swede could beat them from start. That's why the third period gets chaotic. Suddenly they realized that thet can be beaten by Swedish amateurs. After the criticism they got for not sweeping the games against the Soviets, they just couldn't lose this game. Actually a tie really wasn't good enough either, which is the reason for all the nonsense myths about "dirty Swedish stick work", "biased refereeing" and even that the Swedes spat in there faces. The Canadians needed that narrative and at the time they knew the Canadian public wouldn't get a chance to see and review what really happened. You can see in this commentary section how hard the myths are to kill. Everyone can see that Wayne Cashman attacks Ulf Sterner long after the referee blew his whistle for offside. And still people in here claims that Sterner speared in him in the face. Nothing you see at the tape indicates that Sterner did that, actually i looks impossible for him to have done that, since his keeps his arms and stick lower then Cashman at the hit. He can't have hit Cashman in the face with the stick then and it's not likely that he turned and did it later, because nobody reacts, not the ref and not his team mates. So what actually seem to have happened is that Cashman did a late and very rule breaking hit, hurt himself and whined about it later because it fitted with the Canadian version of events. And so the myth lives on, cause Canadians want to believe it more than their eyes...
