The BBC was showing bias already then, saying that Enoch Powell was criticising his party leader, yet when pressed it turns out that the party leader was criticising Enoch Powell. Robin Day is a intellectual pygmy in comparison, it is a pleasure to see such a mind at work!

If Richard Burton was the king of the screen then Enoch Powell was the king of politics. Honest (remember that ?), articulate, highly intelligent, far sighted and a man of courage. To listen to either Mr Burton or Mr Powell is to experience a use of English that few possessed. Furthermore, all of Mr Powells' predictions have been fulfilled

Yes, this was a real `Sliding Doors` moment for the UK. Had the Tories lost, Powell would have been a near on certainty to be their next leader and future PM. Instead the horrific Paedophile traitor Heath pulled off a shock victory and Powell`s political career nosedived. The sad irony is that it was Enoch Powell`s popularity that swayed the vote in the Conservatives favour. This was the day/night that Britain was lost forever, all the misery and destruction that has followed since can be traced back to this moment. Re-watching this interview fills me with sadness and I think that is the overriding emotion of Enoch Powell during this particular interview. He realises his ambition of leading the country is over. So so sad.

This is/was a principled man. Virtually extinct to see principled politicians today. It was straightforward with Mr Powell, he stated what he thought was the correct approach to a given subject, and you either agreed with him or you didn't. At least any potential voter knew where they were with him. He made reading between the lines unnecessary. Therefore he had the rarest of political qualities - he was honest.
@Avidcomp
@Avidcomp 9 жыл бұрын
Charley Nuisance Qualities? I've stated 'principled', which is 'a' quality, but you're almost explicitly suggesting the two men were alike. I'm a man that likes his hair short, so does Hitler. Is that enough to make us alike? Hitler and Enoch and many people (not enough) are principled men. What you fail to ask is, what are the principles? The principles could be opposite and yet both remain principled men. Having principles doesn't tell you what they are. The difference between the two men in this case are that their premises are totally different. Enoch believed in freedom. Welfare state is not freedom. He had no objection to any man of any background moving to Britain, but to do so and be paid through taxes to be able to live there is immoral. Further more, at the time the politicians refuse to discuss a limitation on how many people to support, so in theory there was no limit, which would lead to national bankruptcy. Are you going to digest that and come back with an intelligent response , or stick to an idea that you want to be true regardless of facts ?

What a pleasure to see Powell dismiss Day so easily. Powell's predictions have proved to be inaccurate only in that they have been underestimates of what has occured since the 1970's. The' rivers of blood' have not yet arisen but there has been powerful streams. see 2009 bombings, race riots and the mayhem in Tottenham. Funnily enough though Powell at this time was a bit haggard he did have a nice smile hehehehehehehe
