To Jaime from Nygel-yes and a set of LOKARIS! LOKARI is a firm that makes inner wheelarches like ALL cars have had since about the 1980's. Otherwise mud flung up from underneath sticks to the back of the front panel - and rots it's way out!

@@muckle8 I'm sure this is the one that went for £12,250 the highest bid for one of these for a long time. It's also the same car that cost the restorers 15 grand to bring it to that condition, so no profit there. Nice car though. from the start, I would have moved to wing mirrors to the door panels. Not original but more practical ..

Important point that for younger viewers.Cars rotted like pairs from that era.You soon learnt how to rub back fill prime and paint and then learnt how to weld.Cars dont rot anymore.Anyone thats ever owned a mini will know all about rot in particular!As he says they rotted for fun as you watched just smirking at your vein efforts to stop it.

In the late 70's I bought a white Austin 1100 from the Bracknell Car Auctions ....... Drove it back to Reading like stink!! ...... Got home, lifted the bonnet to see quite a bit of rust .... Called a local welder to have a look, he laughed (Very loudly) and lifted the WHOLE 'Front' OFF of the Sub-Frame .... AARRGGHH!!!!! ..... And I still wonder how I never did a 'Schumaker' racing it back home ......... But this Vanden Plas looks really Peachy 😄👍

The only real achilles heal on these cars is the rear sub frame mount as pointed out in this video. They were notorious for rotting in this location and a quick check under the front of the rear seat will give some idea of its condition. I can honestly say I've never seen one as nice as this since they were a current car on our roads. This range of 1100 & 1300's were a far superior car to the Allegro series that followed it.
@peterfox3989

The Allegro did'nt rust like the 1100/1300 , the front inner wings rotted aswell as the rear sub frame you have mentioned so I would disagree that they were better in anyway.

Bought one as my first car at 18, a C reg in 1974 for £200. Six months later the sub frame fell out, new one was £120. Six months later the engine seized. And I was on the princely sum of £40 a week at the time. Looked great though.
@davidellis279

Barry Rudge. I worked on many of the cars with the sub frame mounts that collapsed,the back panel that supported the mounts were like tissue paper and rotted through in No time. I used to replace the back panel and mounts without draining the hydro elastic system which some people said was impossible,I used to Jack the whole vehicle up high and drop the subframe down and turn it over on itself on the flexible pipes that carried the fluid,you could then get at the corroded back panel and cut it out. Weld a new panel into place and fit new mountings and rebuild turning the subframe over into its original position and rebuild,I must have done hundreds over the years because they were so bad,car sales places used to send them to me for repair after failing MOTs, some garages wouldn’t tackle them with a barge pole but I could do them in my sleep,the more I did the easier it got,sometimes I had to reinforce them because there was so much corrosion around the mounts.
@peterfox3989
@peterfox3989 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidellis279 I totally agree having welded up many 1100/1300 they were rust buckets , the Allegro was a far better car but for some reason has a worse reputation , probably down to people who have never owned one or worked on one.

@@peterfox3989 Before going self employed I used to work for a company as a lorry mechanic but they had a fleet of MG 1100s the rep’s used,they did mega mileages and the gearbox in one of them had to be replaced,I removed the complete unit to fit the gold seal gearbox. While I had the unit split I checked the big end and main bearings,I couldn’t believe how good they were,totally unmarked after nearly 100,000 miles and it used virtually no oil between services. They were always filled with Duckhams 20/50 engine oil which was all the rage in those days,what a great little engine they were,fast and economical,I loved them apart from the rot problem.

Positive earth electrics were often blamed for rampant corrosion. My 1970 1300GT (WJR722J) was a terminal bucket of rust by 1975 when I replaced it with a 1972 Marina 1.8TC Coupe (BVH141K). I remember having to change the idler gear in the 1300GT which was an engine out job to do it properly. I treated it to new big end shells while they were staring me in the face. The AP automatics were a bit obtuse. Nevertheless, it's always a pleasure to see a rare survivor such as this example.
@rogerhudson9732

The AP hot-shiftable automatic was(still is ) a marvel of engineering, the trick is to get both gearbox and engine very clean and then use the best CLASSIC synthetic 20/50 and change it and the oil filter regularly. Sit back and think of England (as it was in 1970).

I wonder if this is a spin-off from Goblin Works Garage. They seem to have very little knowledge of cars. They don’t even know how the hydrolastic suspension works. I did the mod popular on 1100’s in the 60’s of drilling and tapping a hole in the radius arm and filling it with oil. This stopped the arm pivot bearings from wearing out, a common fault. Then there was the added bonus of the oil working it’s way through the bearing and creeping all over the rear subframe stopping any rust. There were enough engine oil leaks to look after the front subframe.
