I love SG’s. I like the sounds, the weight and their symmetry. Being left handed they look great the ‘other way round’ unlike offsets or guitars with pronounced body horns.

I bought a 74 SG special in walnut about 3 or 4 years ago and LOVE it. Out of the all guitars I own it sounds the best.

Those mini humbuckers have a really unique tone - definitely a great addition to anyones collection.

I had a '76 Firebird with mini's. Best sounding guitar ever. Also, I have Telecaster with'goldfoil' mini's. Killer sound, killer guitar. As you so nicely show, the sound of mini's is excellent and I just got my firstSG about 6 months ago. Seems to be a fantastic combination. Thanks cousin.

Yeah, there's just something really unique in this smaller humbuckers. They have a place in that tonal spectrum that others don't have.

A nice guitar and the mini humbuckers don't get enough love. I have a 74 SG Special as well, which I bought way back in 1982 as my first electric guitar. It's not quite as worn as yours but has a lot of buckle rash on the back. Mine has an ABR-1 bridge though and goof rings around the tail piece posts. Mine has a chrome tail piece and isn't tarnished at all, yours looks to have tarnished like a nickel one would. The frets on mine are original, low and wide to begin with and near the point of needing replacing. Congrats on your find, they're are great guitar.

I've played this so much since I got it! I really like the neck on it, which just seems a little more substantial than my 72 Deluxe. The mini humbuckers are great sounding pickups.

The neck humbucker sounds lovely - good clarity and note separation. Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Most definitely. I used it at a rehearsal a while back and everything is super clear even at industrial volume!

Started this morning with my two favorite Scotsmen, Paul Stafford Cook and The Duns. You two should get together for a pint.

Paul is an incredible player. His tone, feel and pitching are so good. We could have a beer and he can teach me some stuff!

Nice! I always think of this model as the John Martyn SG, there's a few videos of him playing one on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the seventies.

A lovely old guitar - definitely different from other SG's, that's for sure!

It reminds me of the SG that Clem from the Alex Harvey band played. But a do think his was a SG special. It must be your accent! Lol great video

I bought that exact guitar in 1973 because of Zal Cleminson! His was an old SG Special with P90s though, and I never liked the mini hum buckers - they were neither one thing or the other, lacking the bite of P90s, but not fat like full-size hum buckers. I eventually chiselled out the bridge position & whacked a DiMarzio in there, which was a huge improvement!

The mini humbuckers have a great Malcom Young quality to them. I prefer the full humbuckers and will always favor them over everything else but that 74 definitely has its own place in the mix. It would be great to use to overdub a track in place of a tele or P90 equipped guitar. Definitely quieter!

Yeah, even when I used it an industrial volume at rehearsal it was totally clear on every note. A great recording tool.
@davepatterson4774Ай бұрын
I know it's inappropriate, but I'm thinking you could pull off some convincing Scott Gorham tones with this one! It's got a great vibe to it and sounds bitchin'!

I should actually have done that!

How much trouble would it have been for Gibson to have made SG's with a through neck like a Firebird ? That would have made a much stronger guitar , the neck body joint is notoriously weak . My first guitar was a 1961 Les Paul Jr with the SG body which became the SG Jr . The LP Jr was 1 3/4 " at the nut and a very slim slinky neck .
