1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow: SU Carburetor Problems + Comparison

This 1975 Rolls Royce is a hundred and eighty degree opposite of the one we picked up over a year ago (see previous videos on that story). This one is a nice example of a driver both inside and out. We go on a drive and do a walk around of the car. Since we have another in the yard we also do a comparison between the 1972 Silver Shadow and the 1975 Silver Shadow. At close glance they look almost identical but there are a few minor differences between the two.

Not a bad Shadow at all. I have 6 of them! The rubber bumpers were introduced in 1974. The ticking noise (from the engine) is the brake pumps trying to get the right pressure (about 1500 lbs) to the accumulators which are bolted to the engine. The leak will definitely cause the brake light to come on. An easy test is the turn on the ignition without starting it after driving car. Push the brake pedal until the brakes lights come back on. 15 pushes is acceptable but not dersireable! The tansmission is a GM400. There is a gear actuator mounted to it which gets a signal from the shifter to select the gears! This will be an exciting series! ALSO, I would be interested in buying it! Again, not a bad car at all! YES, those whitewalls are hideous. Love your channel!

Great advice. I’ll check into that. The gear selector is amusing. I had to repair that on my other rolls. It’s a work of art when it works correctly. I’ll definitely keep you in mind when I get done with this one.

Great RR, good on you. Those tool kits go missing all the time so its a great asset. It has the socket for the oil change which is always missing, great to have. Will you rent it our for parties and weddings? Beautiful car...

Thanks! We plan on taking it to a few car shows, we wouldn't be objected to letting someone use it for weddings. We have a '62 Cadillac we have done that with in the past.

Doing a history of the RR could be a good suggestion. Then you will appreciate the fine piece of motoring history you have. And despite what you say, the SU carby is the stuff legends are made of. Please fix it and no replace.

I am going to look into that and see if I can track down the history of this one. I’ve been trying to do that on the other rolls as well. I spaced some updated floats for them so it shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

Ma786sai Dua mine is a 1982 Mark 1 Spirit. An ethereal wafting. I didn’t know that clicking, clatter at first morning start up is from the brake pumps building up the required pressure. It lasts just a minute then the church-like quiet

Hopefully they will sound better once I fix the leak at the back. It has a line leaking so it never builds pressure on one circuit.

Search "RRTechnical 14.pdf" for full electrical schematics for the car... a problem with the Rolls window lifts is the brake solenoid seizing and not unlocking on the window motors. I understand the later models deleted this solenoid and went to 2 wire motors. Have just the window lift schematics in a handy 6mb pdf if you've got the 4 wire system and you'd like it. The 4 fuses at the top of the fusee board (pull pin under the driver's steering wheel) are for the window lifts... the ones on the actual side x2 are for the electric seats I believe. Plenty of 30-40 year old wires and connectors that can have dodgy faults and can be a PITA to find. Hope this helps
