Bit of history behind this scoreline..... Derby had gotten off to a poor start to the 76/77 season. So, on the Monday morning of that week, Dave McKay summoned each player individually to his office, gave them the mother of all bollickings, and told them that their jobs would be on the line, depending on how they performed against Harps. In those days of meagre wages barely being sufficient to cover the rent, this was the motivation for them piling on the goals: they were afraid they'd be on the dole queue next day..... literally. Word on the schoolyard in Dublin that Wednesday morning was: "Harps gonna get eaten alive tonight!".....and so!

I know there is still a gulf between the bigger and smaller nations but it’s incredible how far clubs from Ireland, Luxembourg, Cyprus have developed since then. The standard used to be appalling, barely amateur level.

Think the Goalkeeper got nobbled pre-match with a tasty bung ... whose side are you on ??? Of course Dave Mackay was cautiously optimistic for the second leg in Ireland. Actually I think the overall aggregate of 16-1 (yes Finn Harps netted if my memory is correct?) might have been a record for some time ....

Record for the UEFA Cup? Chelsea had already beaten Jeunesse Hautcharage 21-0 in the ECWC. Still a record to this day.

Yep. Harps took the lead in return leg. A Derby OG ( seriously ). My lot, Bohemians, beat Harps 6-0 a few months later, and I remember saying .. well, we’re half as good as Derby. In fairness, 12-0 was a disgrace. It’s only a game, but fck sake.
