It is unfortunate that you don't see this classic american beauty in Europe. Particularly in eastern parts, such as in Serbia (my home country). This is not just a machine this is a noble piece of art and beauty. It encompasses the essence of old school american spirit. My father was in New York in 1970's and drove in one of these monumental cars and he always told me: "son, there's no such car in the world as Cadillac. It is the car with american soul". He is to thank for all my love towards old school american classics and i am grateful. Greetings from Serbia!

So sad that the 1976 with its massive 500 ci engine only put out 190 bhp at 3600 rpm with all the smog equipment that was then required. Compare that with the 1970 Eldo with a 500ci engine that put out 400 bhp at 4400 rpm with no or very little smog gear. 1970 was the only year the 500 ci engine was allowed to perform as it was designed.

Some guys back then saw the last, large 1976 Eldo convertible as an investment and bought them for that reason. My neighbor in Florida owned a Caddy dealership in Ohio during those years and said that his and other Caddy Cleveland area dealerships didn't have lifts that could raise these 20 foot giants without damaging the frame. Still, what a remarkable car.

In 1974, my parents spent a lot of time at the Caddy dealer in downtown Santa Ana, California. I was 15, board, and eager to start driving lessons. The Belle of the Showroom was the Eldorado, especially the convertible. I drooled all over it! Of course, we were getting the 4 door Sedan de Ville. Farely pedestrian for SoCal back then. 1975 and '76 the car remained virtually unchanged except for the headlights. And I HATED them. EVERYBODY was putting them in. I still remember that someone actually did the research and found that the rectangular design didn't illuminate as well as the round ones. Of all three years ('74, '75, '76) the 1974 had the smallest number produced. I know the Bicentennial edition was only 200, and yeah... after a few years, they made drop tops again here and there. I've looked all over for a white on white example 1974. Can't find one. A lot of these cars get shipped over to Europe for wedding work. Wish we'd stop shipping off our heritage overseas like that. Anyway, this was a real nice, beautiful automobile, as grandma used to say, meaning it really was special. Even with those headlights!! Lol

My parents bought a new 1977 Biarritz white on white. My dad put custom wheels right after they bought it. The envy of the neighborhood. The rubber extensions on the fenders did not age well. I inherited it decades later and I purchased new front fender extensions from the Cadillac dealership. They're not available anymore of course but you can still buy after market reproduction fender extensions.

He heard they weren't making convertibles anymore so he kept in and bought a new Blazer. The caddy was $17,000.00 then . He had it till 82 then saw they topped off in price in 1980. Sold it in 82. Believe it or not, these cars had a low center of gravity, they really didn't lean going around corners.A beast of a car. On the highway it doesn't feel like you're moving at 75mph. I owned a '76 with a 425 fuel-injected. I squeezed 17mpg average out of it using Autolite Platinums, if I remember I gapped them to .045" I also had an Alpine radio/cassette,12 band equalizer, Orion 400.4 amp with two Orion Extreme3 15" woofers and two 6X9 Traxials All in their own cabinets. It sounded like the band was actually in my back seat. I miss that car, I still have the stereo but changed the receiver to a Pioneer Supertuner w/CD.

It's closer to about 8.2 litre's . I think that the record for the longest hood on a production car from Detroit went to the 1970 Lincoln Mark III that added the hideaway wipers to bring the hood further over the cowl. My memory of it was a person pointing out that it just passed the 7 feet mark . This was impressive because the Mark III hood stopped prior to the front area because of the hide away light and heavy chromed metal Lincoln grill to make no mistake that is wasn't a nice high end Ford . They must have seen an issue with trying to include the grills weight as leverage at 7 feet to demand stronger Springs to keep it open , or to also avoid being in the way for mechanic to clip their head since the grill piece was hang down about 1 foot .

Because the public was told that 1976 convertibles and Centennial editions (last 200 of the 14K built) would be the last convertibles made and as many buyers paid much more for them over retail, they sued GM when years later they made the 1984/85 Eldorado Biarritz convertibles out of the 2 door hardtops, the suit was unsuccessful however. I'm happy they commissioned the two latter years because I own a 1985 Eldorado Biarritz convertible with faux Rolls-Royce grille and continental kit. White exterior with the red interior, quite striking indeed!!! Not quite the barge the 76 is and a timeless body style in my opinion. Maybe there is one in this collection you can do a story on? Its getting to be convertible weather here on the Central Coast of California too!!

Demand was greater than supply. It was the last 6 passenger convertible. It was an example of crooked marketing that allowed dealers to get more money than they should have. I love every version of the El Dorado ever made all the way up to this model in 1976. However...from that era... I like the 1972 Eldorado the best of this version. Because the 72 model had more horsepower... And it did not have the plastic body fillers at the front and rear bumpers.

Why did they underpower the 500 by 1976? I read that this 500 only makes 190HP and 360lb•ft of torque. In 1970 this same engine was making 400HP and 550lb•ft of torque. Did it have to do with emissions? Design flaws when the block was over-stressed? Just curious when today a Honda Civic makes nearly the same amount of horsepower, not the same torque numbers but....
@loucostabile8 жыл бұрын
Hi Evan, Emissions yes, and I believe insurance ratings were connected to HP. Hope that helps, Lou
@wizardmix8 жыл бұрын
Lou Costabile Thanks, that does help! Yeah, seems like such a capable engine to be so under-stressed. Considering HP to Weight ratio, she could probably use at least 350 and we know that 500 can do it. Looking at it another way though, the Eldorado wasn't really made for the type of person who is looking to accelerate or corner. The demographic that want's a huge lumbering 5000Lb floating status barge on wheels with the numbest possible driving feedback almost doesn't exist anymore except in small pockets of hipster culture and those who have a mysterious passion for these old inefficient boats. I suppose that's me.
@fishbowl70987 жыл бұрын
no,the big change{decrease} in advertised horsepower for ALL engines of this time period was largely due to the way they MEASURED it....up until 1972 or 1973 or so,the manufactures advertised GROSS horsepower,that is an engine sitting on a stand in a lab without running any of the accessory drive components attached to the engine{think AC compressor,alternator,PS pump,etc} and open exhaust.....around 1972,govt mandated manufacturers advertise only NET horsepower,as installed in the car with everything hooked up as it would be in a installed car.....the HP was still measured at the crank however,not the wheels,so driveline losses are not included in either measurement.Emission regs also lowered HP,but the big drop was just in the way they were allowed to advertise the numbers
@larryhawkins32945 жыл бұрын
Fish bowl's answer is the most comprehensive explanation of the substantial decrease in horse power ratings during this period.

My 1996 northstar sedan deville spends 99.97% of the time in my garage, and I managed to find a yellow top to fit in there too. Seems conventional lead acid batteries do not like to sit, and be run down because after a year or two, that lead acid battery would not hold a charge. Seems the glass mat batteries are more forgiving with being run down a few times because my last battery lasted from 2008 to 2016.

Interesting only because it's a bloated example of how badly Cadillac lost their way in the 70s

Lou, it was the best of times, but the worst of time for the American car manufacturers? Too big, too heavy, too wide, and too long? Anti pollution Controls making for under powered, poor running, the beginning of the end of driveway tune ups? Instead of metal, inexpensive looking plastic everywhere one looked in this era?The mid to late 60's Caddy Eldorado front wheel drive was a simpler, cleaner, and more elegant looking car? Also the Wonderful first generation Old's Toronado's? I know some one whoown's a 2014? Caddy coupe. I believe the car to be perfection on wheels? V 6, 300HP? All wheel drive etc. Times are getting better for the automobile? Everywhere, but Cost! Thank You! Peter Brooks.

Peter Brooks cadillacs haven't been "perfection in wheels" for decades now. The brand died in the 70's, and never recovered.

Hi fish bowl, It's a REALLY Big Fat Daddy Caddy engine :-) If you want stats enjoy the Car & Driver KZbin Channel or Consumer reports Channel, however if you want to relax, grab a beverage, have a good time enjoying looking at some amazing cars, have fun, then stay right here. Enjoy yourself, and you might learn something along the way. It's up to you, Lou
@fishbowl70987 жыл бұрын
if YOU are giving your viewers stats in your videos,they should be accurate.....otherwise just film the cars without stating the stats.Own up to sloppy inaccurate info,and either do your research before releasing the videos,or dont include detailed info if you are too lazy to make sure it is accurate........pretty basic if you want to be a professional.
