1976 Caprice Classic Junkyard Find. So the question is would you junk this car? Or would you save this old land yacht? I would have definitely saved this one. Lots of life left in this old girl and although see is a 4 door, she was too nice to scrap. The body wasn't all beat up and the interior was still in good shape all things considered. Under the hood it was all pretty much there. Heck, even all the tires still held air. I bet that car could have be driven out of that spot. Alas it was not to be as its now being parted out and soon will be crushed. Good night ol girl.

I think it might be a 350. A lot of the 400 engines were two barrel then. Whoa Nelley, good NOS parts, grab em. Lol. The trim tag was on the right side I believe. That carburetor kit wouldn't be anything good anymore, as the gaskets have dried out and good replacement kits are still readily available in the aftermarket. The Delco cap is worth grabbing, the two ignition switches are worth it, that appears to be an NOS Delco in the box. Whoever owned this car cared enough at one time to buy Delco parts for it, back when Delco was actually Delco sourced and not aftermarket in the Delco box being sold as Delco, which is generally the case today with their line. The VIN could have been 1 for Chevrolet, N for Caprice, 69 for 4 door, The 350 4 barrel VIN code would have varied depending on the version, the next would be 6 for 1976 model year, I would say it might be an "R" for Arlington, TX as they did assemble the B bodies from what I recall and since you're in TX, that's probably the case here (the trim tag would have told us....), and the rest would be the production sequence.

I meant to grab some of those nos parts. I did get one of the carb kits. It was still sealed and looked good. And for $5 it could at least look cool on the shelf

The engine is a 400 small block with the 4 barrel. 400's and 454's went into the Caprices and the 350's went into the Impalas. That's why that decal tag on the core support says 350-400. I've had a ton of these cars and currently have a 76 Caprice Landau.

McCool is more of a Mopar guy. He chose to "save" a 4 door Dodge aspen. Not my first choice.... Or even my 50th choice😄. In my experience, if that car came with a 4 barrel carb. (Which it has) it will be a 400. If it were a 350, it would have a 2 barrel. Of course that is assuming the 4 barrel is original. Always check for the notch in the harmonic balancer to be sure.

Cohen Van Cleef Wow, if this is true, and you did buy it to save it...bless your heart and may the restoration go smoothly and completed with success! Always great when someone saves these from the crusher or the demo derby. Found me a ‘76 Bonneville back in ‘10 and don’t plan on letting it go anytime soon...if at all! Kinda toying with the thought of a ‘75 98 Regency to add to the collection, but these big B-bodies of this generation requires lots of space. Super worth it though.

Some people waxing poetic about this car but 1976 was the beginning of the Malaise era. When emission and fuel economy controls took so much out of engine performance before computers and fuel injection that these cars literally could not get out of the way. Today this thing would get beat by a 2019 Civic Hybrid. Really. There’s no car worth rebuilding/repairing from this era. Not even a Corvette. Nothing from 1975 until the 1986 Buick Grand National. Everything else in between those years is junk.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 5 жыл бұрын
I think you're wrong about that. There are plenty of 1976 cars worth restoring, including Corvettes and the last of the Eldorado convertibles from 1976. You can also add in Camaros, 50th Anniversary SE Trans Ams, regular Trans Ams, and list goes on. There are plenty of "Malaise Era" cars going up in value, heck I own one, a '79 Trans Am with a 400. If you don't believe me, look at what they're fetching. For the time, these cars were what they were. Now, we are nostalgic for them. Plus with a little tuning, the 70s cars can be made to run and also have good reliability.
@joe6096
@joe6096 5 жыл бұрын
The values on the Trans Ams are solid because of Smokey and the Bandit, and they do look cool, but even an ‘89 Trans Am 350 TPI would beat your 400 stock for stock. If you’re going to modify it sure but then you do those same mods to that ‘89 and it’s still faster. The late 70s Corvettes had 0-60 times pushing 10 seconds. Even Corvette purists and hard core enthusiasts forget about that era. You can pick up a ‘79 in mint condition for $5k. We’re a Camaro/Corvette family and we’d like to forget the late 70s-early 80s ever happened. As for a ‘76 Eldorado convertible, those have to be among the ugliest cars ever made. Hideous. Thank God GM came to their senses in ‘79 style wise. If only they never produced the V8-6-4 and HT4100.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 5 жыл бұрын
@@joe6096 Not really true. Well, the '79 Trans Am 400 did zero to 60 in about 7.5 seconds, not bad for a 1968 design by 1979, with all the smog equipment. Put an '89 TPI next to a '79 Trans Am at a show and everyone walks to the '79. The '89 looks like a has been, nothing special there. Still rattles, squeaks and jostles you around. The WS6 handled very well in 1979 and is still respectable today. Four wheel disc in '79 was all the rage. The 350 TPI did zero to 60 in about 6.5 seconds. Not too great for 10 years later. Your point was to the collectability of the 70s cars. They are collectable now. The reason the later 70's Trans Ams have come up is because the early Super Duty cars and such are unreachable by most and they go to the next best thing which are the 400 engine equipped Trans Ams of later years. You may not like them, but there are plenty of 70s cars that are collectable. If they weren't, they wouldn't be reproducing parts for them like they are today. You can get decal kits, reproduction panels and the like for 70s cars which were unheard of a few years ago. There was nothing wrong with the 4-6-8 if you knew what you were doing with it. If you didn't want that, just make it run on all 8 cylinders and you had a reliable TBI (actually DFI) engine.

@@joe6096 You're also saying that the 79 and up Eldorados are better styling wise. WRONG. 79 and up Eldorados are worth much less than the ones made 1978 and before. Yes, Cadillac did come up with the V4,V6,V8 engine in the early 1980s that was a TOTAL disaster. And the Cimarron in 83. GM was going downhill starting around 1981. Thanks to GM CEO Roger Smith. What did we get from him? Outsourcement of labor to 3rd world countries and he gave us Saturn, which is DEAD now. But GM did try to help the consumers by introducing the EV1 in the late 1990s until 2003, where they were all crushed because EVs threaten Big Oil and "they weren't popular enough". As a result, Tesla is picking up the EV potential where GM gave up on. Now they're saying sorry by offering a Chevy Volt and the EV Spark. Michael Moore made a documentary about that 30 years ago called Roger and Me, so don't take my word for it. Also there's a documentary called Who Killed the Electric Car? Good stuff man

The ‘79-85 Eldorados might not have been flashy but they were much better looking. From ‘74-78 the Eldorado was absolutely disgusting and nothing you say will change my mind so you can save your breath. Also I have zero respect or trust of anyone who suggests I even think about watching or reading anything Michael Moore does. He’s an immature imbecile and a disgusting pig. I laugh when people cry about the EV1. It was a complete experiment by GM which is why - and people are idiots for whining about this - the leases were all single ended with no renewal. Whether it was a success or not, whether people loved them or not, it was a complete engineering exercise by GM. The people who leased them knew it when they signed the papers. They were property of GM and if they wanted them all back to crush at the end of the lease that was for GM and only GM to say.
