Rod, I am sorry to hear that you have had this happen to that engine. I followed your videos on the rebuild of this engine and learned a lot.

Hey Rod, hope the tear down can reveal some sort of issue that I can avoid in my 912E engine rebuild this next year. Looking forward to your next video, sorry that whatever it is poked a whole in your driving fun. Stay Cool brother!

I should tear it down in the next week or so. You are the reason why I post these videos. Hopefully, you can learn from my mistakes. LOL.

It may be some other cause perhaps a manufacturer's defect or something else.

I followed all of your assembly videos. I thought your attention to detail and assembly was a 10 out of 10. You cannot control the quality of parts that you have to use these days. Sometimes these aftermarket drinks just will not hold a rod bearing the finish is less than desirable. The bearing is another issue the quality has become awful. Keep your head up you did a fine job all part of the fun they say lol

Thanks. Nothing has happened to her yet. I'm in the middle of remodeling the house so the E has been put on the shelf for now. When I tear into it, I will keep you posted.

Rod how much more difficult and costly is it to build a 2270 over a 2056?

@@rodezell2563 Does the 2270 give you a good pit more performance? I have to rebuild my 1.7L 914.
@rodezell2563
@rodezell2563 4 ай бұрын
@@Mr10usdad The 2056 feels like you rebuilt what you had, but the 2270 is so much more fun to drive. If you decide to build a 2270, you will not regret it. The 1.7 case is the strongest Type 4 manufactured.

Not yet. I figured I would tear it down after the holidays, and after I buy a lift. I'm tired of crawling around under there. LOL.

What plug wires are those you’re using with the 123 ignition?

Did you Plasigauge the rob bearing clearances when you built the engine ? Just wondering if you had an out of tolerance bearing that has gotton worse

@rodezell2563 Out of interest, what manufacturer of rod bearings were they ? Just so you know, i'm not asking out of just internet curiosity I'm in the middle of building a 2270 Type 4 for my girlfriends T25 1984 camper van Got all my parts from Jim Calvert at Stateside Tuning in the UK ( as am i ) I've built loads of T1 engines ( stock and stroker) The Type 4 is a bit more fiddly to assemble I had to play around with my 26 mm Shadek oil pump a fair bit to get it to work in the Type 4 crankcase. I was lucky , jim had genuine VW main bearings and Mahle rod bearings Even got a NOS engine case from him I'm also using the 123 Bluetooth programmable distributor

It really looked like your engine was stiff when you buttoned up the case, you MUST check bearing clearances and never proceed unless it rotates smooth as butter at ever step

Sorry, but I don't hear a rod knock. What I do hear is a valve train issue. Usually, a rod knock sounds much deeper than that and it doesn't speed up went you rev it. My 2 cents

Tighten your valves a bit too much as a diagnostic (just for quick test to eliminate any play, also how tight did you set side play on rockers???) also check for exhaust leaks.(diag over youtube audio is hard, but thats a good recording.) Rod knock also tends to be easiest to hear on decel, like throttle off down a hill. It is going to change frequency with rpm, but I agree that the few unfortunate time I have heard it it is a deeper clunk than anything I can hear in the video.

I don't know yet, but more than likely it is the big end. Jake also said he heard something else in the cam and lifters.
