This is a new old stock Bianchi Specialissima. I build it with an array of NOS components and a few that arent. This is not a restoration but a build. There was nothing to restore. This is a rare bike to have in this condition. So proud to be the guy that builds this up. Its my first build video, please leave friendly comments and critiques below. I worked at a shop from 1982-1985 and we had some classic Bianchis that never sold. No idea what models they were. When I left the shop to go to college there were still some in boxes that had been there since I started and never built up. Always wondered what happened to those bikes.

I think the Frame can't be NOS from 77. This Frame is resprayed , you can see this on the Screws from Bottleholder and the new Decals . But i love this Frame . Thank you for showing .

Magnificent! My first real bike was a Colnago Mexico in 1984 suntour superbe. When I could campy Nuevo record went on it. I preferred track pedals. Suntour was identical to Campy in use. Love that blue Colnago on the wall👍

Beautiful bike! It's always so nice to work with the good parts with quality bearings, good threads, etc., especially when you also have to deal with some other parts that barely function when new. There might not have been time (or need) to mention it, but when installing a chain pin, it may be necessary to use the upper position on the chain tool to avoid/fix a stiff link. I'm not sure how many folks out there have ever installed a chain without a master link.

Well built, if I may just a note, there is a mix of Nuovo record and Super record components. I know that 1977 Super Record rear derailleur is hard to find but I would have made the effort to complete the bicycle with a complete Super record groupset. Safe ride

I managed a bicycle dealership back in the 80s that sold Bianchi. Of course they had plenty of models from Asia. But the bikes from their factory in Milan were a treat. I love the Celeste green.

I had one with similar logos on the seat stays and fork crown. I searched all over for a serial no and the only place I could find is like yours, at the top of the seat tube on the drive side. Mine was 501. It was originally red and had been painted black with gold splatters, according the the seller the previous owner painted it that way to discourage theft. But it did have a nice compliment of Campagnolo group. I had it blasted and powder coated red, I just couldn't love the gold splatter. I have since moved it on to a good owner.

NICE BUILD! My 'rich neighbor/friend' had an '83 Bianche in celeste green, looked exactly the same as your build here. 90% of the components were the same. For some reason they sold with almost but not quite full Campy NR gruppo, only difference the Modolo Speedy brakes (and 'maybe' cheaper non Campy pedals? Not sure.), and my friend had to (have his rich dad) buy him your same Campy Record brakes, cause he said the Modolo Speedys 'sucked'. OC he had to be the 1st to buy Look Pedals (PP56) in '85, a year before everyone else started buying them. I remember he had to drill 3 holes in each of his SIDI cycling cleats and tack in the 6 included spiked nuts to get the Look delta cleats to bolt on (black delta cleats w/o 'float' were only cleats available at the time). I also remember his SIDI cleats' soles delaminated from him repeatedly pulling up when climbing out of the saddle & sprinting. I was his 'poor neighbor/friend' who had to save $ for over a year doing yard work and odd jobs for 'rich folks in the neighborhood' to buy my 1st 'decent road bike' (an '86 Nashbar Road LP for $283 on sale [$765 on 2022 $]). I still have that bike. I believe Shogun made the frames for Bike Nashbar. My Nashbar was made in Japan w/triple butted Ishiwata tubing. The frame is strange, has the seatstays cross and braze onto the seattube and toptube making an ~ 8" triangle. Considering my frame's 25" (I'm 6' 4") this weird engineering makes this my stiffest steel bike, and rides the best of all my vintage bikes IMO. The geometry seems 1/2 '80s Sport Tourer' with 73° head/seattube angles & 40" wheelbase, not all out racing, but not 'sport touring' bike either. My only gripe with riding it today in my 50s is I could just BARELY fit 28mm Conti Gatorskins on the rear, having to file the brake bridge of frame a tad to get 1.5mm of clearance (I know, supposed to be minimum 3mm but not possible. Front 28mm gatorskin does have 3mm clearance). Gotta have 28mm tires since I'm a Clyde at 225 lbs. Back in HS I thought I had 'the sucky bike' but I was completely wrong. Nashbar made excellent bikes back in the 80s. My Nashbar came equipped with the typical mishmash of Suntour, Sugino & Dia-Compe components which all meshed together nicely. Same gearing as your Bianchi (2x6 sp: 42/52t 13-24t). I believe my old neighbor/friend still owns his Bianchi also, his with tubulars.

I remember shoes before they were Look compatible. It was some work to get them to work well! That triple triangle design of your Shogun was adopted by GT bicycles. They use that design now. It does increase stiffness. Alot of great framesets came out of Japan in the 80s. Many manufacturers went to Japan to source their framesets. Alot of that product was under rated back then. They are worth keeping and riding! Thanks for watching!

My Eddy Merckx is an 85' pro I believe . made in Belgium Columbus tubes but as I mentioned I lost/stolen the parts while it was stripped for over haul...I got it from a unpaid storage unit bid . $250 ...frame and fork original mavic wheels ..... before I stripped it I rode about 800-1000 miles on it and it's so fun ...need modular carbon tho , stuff insane. BTW you know your stuff !!! All the vintage info is especially cool 😎 cheers

3.6 looks like half of the serial number to me. On my 1982 (1981 build) Campione d'Italia, the S/N wraps around the seat lug, with 1.M on one side and 9914 on the other.

I have a Racing Department 1995 TSX UL frame and fork, that I raced from 1995 to 2000. I believe that 1995 was the last year that they made steel frames in their racing department. After that, it was Ti, and then, finally, carbon. I built it up with Campy Chorus 8 speed Ergo. 8 speed Campy allowed me to use all of my old 7 speed race wheels, because it would index perfectly with the Sachs freewheels. You just had to block off the last shift on the derailleur stop screws.

PS. That stem looks like a Cinelli 1A. Back then, Cinelli bars and stems were 26.2mm, instead of the standard 26.0mm. I've got some of those shift levers around in my parts box. I can't remember when Campy changed their BCD to 135mm, so that they could fit a 42 ring, but sometime in the 70's they could only take a 44 ring. At that time, the QR levers were straight, not curved.

Yes. You know your history. Campy would always fit the 42 with that 144 bolt patter. Most of my bikes have that crankset. If im not mistaken Cinelli had 26.4, 26.2 and the latest is 26.0.. Depends on the age of the stem right?? The wheelset is NOS from early 80s. Its not the correct Era.. Gosh cant get away with anything!! LOL Thanks for your good eye!

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage Looks like I slipped up. That 135mm is for the semi modern cranks that could take a 39 ring. The 144mm BCD allowed a 42 ring (some people made a 41 that would fit on). My memory must be failing....My old Cinelli 1A bar and stem IS 26.4mm, not 26.2. After sitting unused for 15 years, I updated Bianchi, and now use it as a Sunday bike. I put on most of a Shimano 7700, 9 speed group, because I have lots of Shimano 8,9,10 speed wheels. The only things left on it are Campy, are the cranks, BB, headset, and an old friction type Super Record front derailleur (with the black links) For some strange reason, that friction front derailleur works well with a Shimano indexed left shifter.

Given that grease over time, especially over forty years congeals, of course you did FULLY disassemble the entire BB, as well, the headset, FULLY clean out all parts, FULLY relubricate and reassemble, right......? You lightly honed out the seat tube, right? You assessed BB final setting of the adjustable cup via 360 ("12/3/6/9" O'clock) degree rotation of drive side before you mounted the left crank, right? Given the age of the NOS hubs, they were also disassembled and relubed, reset with pre-load gap for final proper bearing pressure once clamped down with proper QR closure, right? The Regina was, of course, fully cleaned and relubed, right? Rear triangle assessed for alignment, right? Fogging all 11 tubes not necessary but beneficial before assembly. Entire 1-A stem bolt assembly FULLY tagged with anti-seize on all surfaces, as well, steering tube I.D., 1-A O.D. before assembly, right? Clear protective tape underneath the cable guides is always a good idea. So too, fully disassembling the pedals before mounting and regreasing both sets of bearings as the grease has congealed. It's always a sound idea to lightly lubricate upper and lower RD pivot bolts and lubricate/oil the pulleys. The Nuovo Record derailleur is in fact correct for that frameset.

The answer to most of your questions is "NOPE" That overhaul will probably take place this winter. I was just doing a nice before and after build. Looks like you have all the makings of an excellent overhaul video. Come on by the shop and we can do one!!!

I actually have a bike like this one but the one I have is Bianchi Brava 1980 or something and it is still in pretty good shape but it has a couple rust due to the oldnest of the bike and the groupset it came with is shimano 105. I just want it to be restored but I don't know where. I'm from the Philippines lovelots!

Loved Loved the video😊 I am actually trying to look at any vintage Bianchi video and resto I can find.😂 The Covid shut down led me to my new hobby, on top of my many other endeavors I get into. I am looking to find a resto like the one am doing now-because it is a rare bird I came across and I love this bike so much I had no choice but to restore it. I am just getting frustrated to the fact that finding parts for it is futile.😔 But we do what we can, for what we have…,right? 😊🎃 I will keep watching your projects🙃☮️👈🏽

If you're very patient, you can keep looking around and find a rough bicycle with a decent campagnolo group that is worth shining up. I've been doing that forever. This was an easy rest. Oh because there was no restoration lol. It was all new old stock. Just pricey

Great build. So cool to see in such good nick. I have a Bianchi Pista Peroni edition that has the same livery with the accents slashes on the B and I. Any idea on the logo meanings? Or eras??? Bianchi have so many different versions/fonts.

I can tell you that I underpaid for the frameset, bars and stem together all NOS was $1425. The wheels were NOS and $300. Other used campy stuff you can probably look up. Some I had on hand. I have equity in this bike which is nice. Thanks for watching.

the way gas prices are people will buy more bikes I saw it one year bike shops were selling bikes at a rapid rate to the point cars weren't selling I had to laugh I loved it hooray for the bike I still have my 15 speed Schwinn now gas prices 5.00 a gallon bike shops are doing a spectacular job they are selling like hot cakes great for the bike industry too bad Schwinn is out of business

Firstly, beautiful bike John. Do you know a good resource to find out the age and model of an older Bianchi bike? The only bike I have is an older Bianchi road bike, I’m guessing a bit newer than this one (probably 80s) and not Celeste but more of a cobalt blue. Would love to know the exact age and model as it’s still in pretty good condition and I love the thing.

Yo, just look at your seat-lug for the serial number to see its not a 1977 model, but a 1976 model, which would have come with NR grouppo. So much for flashing a 77 SR rear derailleur, but its still a vey nice bike. Great mechanical and youtube ability but you might need to spend a few bucks for new glasses my friend.

Thanks! I've been corrected on the model year. Funny. When I purchased it and showed off the frame to some Campagknowitalls they a went with the 77 year. I guess I should work harder confirming it huh? As per glasses. Im blind as a bat. Thanks

the loss of feel riding with clinchers versus the original sew ups is massive...sew ups provide a far and away better ride for the purist...perhaps try those bad boy sew ups again? My guess is you'd drive differently from what you did as a young man, and the sew ups are better now too. As someone who'se done this very same thing with an early 70's Campy Atala, I can say clinchers were a big mistake. Too much loss of Ferrari like road feel.
