@@EDOTrains They were crazy times. All my life up until then I watched the NE railroads sink into the mud. No internet so everything was via the “grapevine.” Then came ConRail and I watched in horror as my beloved EL was picked apart by the vultures. After close to a half-century I now understand what happened, why it happened and how the industry survived as a whole because of it. Even so, there were other, better options that could have been taken but maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

I lived in SW Baltimore County and could see the tops of the towers holding the catenary for the Pennsy between Baltimore and Washington. Closest NE Corridor station, Halethorpe. The sound of the trains was not loud, but noticeable, and often the blue-green high-voltage arcs would provide visual markers for the progress of the GG1 electrics that, for a while, was the entirety of the lines electric locomotive fleet. Crossing the tracks was a challenge, especially in curves, as the tilting of the tracks for speed made crossing those tracks on foot like crossing a series of small mountain ridges. Fortunately few places made trespassing much of an option. I believe the posted track speed then was 79 mph, but no penalty for 95-100 to stay on schedule. One of my last NE Corridor trips was on a train, The Piedmont?, to visit an uncle in SC. Arrived at BWI to catch that train, only to watch that train depart six or seven minutes ahead of schedule as we entered the parking lot. "I guess we cut that a little too close," I say to my sister, who was driving. "No worries," she says, "you can take the next train and catch up in Washington." But I already knew that.

You are the second person to mention this being the root cause of the lack of freight trains on the NEC. So I got feedback from a few of my former colleagues at Amtrak: "AMFLEET I cars have always had trainlieable doors. Amfleet II were always manual.. sorry, my original AM I maintenence manuals are at the storage facility The door controls were in the com cable circuits, not the MU which were added later." Though always automatic, they did of course have a manual option for opening the doors which would have been used in more rural locations; think perhaps once Amfleet started being used in corridor and long-distance service. WOW! What an incredible video of GG1s and Amtrak equipment! What are the locomotives pulling the freight trains at 3:00 minutes in the video? Thanks for uploading this!

Hi there! Depends on what the numbers are as far as whether they are E-44 locomotives, bought new by and delivered to the PRR by GE, or EL-C/E-33 locomotives, inherited by Penn Central and then Conrail from previous owner new haven, who bought them from the Virginian Railway when that coal carrier went out. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginian_EL-C en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Railroad_class_E44

I am surprised the freight is following the passenger towards the end so closely. Seems there'd be far more separation for signaling blocks / safety. Even back then?

Freight train is on a different track I think.

@@johnplampin7274 Yeah Duh!!! I originally watched this on my phone, could not see that detail. It's pretty obvious on my home PC w/27" screen at 1st when the passenger train is actually next to the freight. Thanx for the correction!

I'd have to go back and rewatch cuz I thought the same thing at first, but I do think they are on parallel tracks, not the same track. Thank you for your feedback, please consider subscribing if you have not!

Yeah I thought it was pretty wild that like 40% of the trains are freight, compared to what now; 5% of the total traffic on the corridor? Thanks for dropping by, please consider subscribing scribing if you haven't already!

Before the Conrail Amtrak pissing contest over Amtrak's electricity prices. Imagine two govt companies fighting about prices. Conrail went exclusively diesel for freights and largely rerouted off the NEC.

I had no clue it was something like this that spelled the end of E's and G's in freight Service! I always figured it was just something efficiency related since theoretically run through trains could be coming from almost anywhere... Thank you for this! And thank you for watching

3:32 was CNJ low on equipment?
@EDOTrains
@EDOTrains 2 ай бұрын
I'm sure there are folks that better CNJ expertise than my own, but I would surmise that when a plethora of Great Northern Empire Builder equipment (hence the "Jersey Builder" nickname these trains received) became available with the coming of Amtrak, getting 1940s and '50s intercity equipment at scrap rates to replace already 50-year-old PRR commuter coaches (P70? Etc.) was an offer too good to refuse. I can't see if you are subscribed; please consider doing so if you haven't already. Hopefully somebody with additional knowledge will comment and further fill in the blank for you.

No it would not only passenger trains and maybe one or two locals. Also no platform to stand on as that station no longer exists. Great video though.

Thank you for this history update! Yeah so no station at all there anymore huh? Did they open up one adjacent or just pull up stakes generally?

i grew up in North Philadelphia in the late 1960s , Pre Amtrak , Penn Central era, watching trains run through the North Philly station on their way to who knows where, I used to love to see the big GG-1s at speed and the E-44 s pulling long freight consist, and the commuter trains going to and from Downtown Center City, Train watching as a little kid from the ghetto was always an adventure but fun !!!!

I am a city creature and very much know, what you know, and that most Rail fans don't know; that city is the best opportunities to view a variety of trains and that people will generally leave you alone while you experience it. Thank you for watching, hope this was a good stroll down memory lane, please consider subscribing if you haven't already!

So them and the CNJ GP40 passenger engines still haunt the Northeast (for NJ Transit, though rebuilt quite a bit).
