Tenth-ranked Penn State began its 1977 season with a home date against No. 9 Houston. The Nittany Lions were lead by eventual All-American quarterback Chuck Fusina, and would finish the year 11-1. Penn State won this game 31-14, holding off strong efforts by the dynamic Cougars offense.

Penn State and Houston have met three times. 1964 at Rice Stadium. 1977 at Penn State and 2012 in Dallas. Paterno was the DC in 1964 and was the head coach in 77 and 11 before being fired before they played the bowl game. He was still head coach 34 years after this game.

Houston was a strong team, especially offensively. Penn State's defense was awesome...seemed ready for some of the plays Houston ran and just shut them down.

This was during a time in which there were INDEPENDENTS GALORE, and yet college football went about it's " business" just fine. Now...the game has self- deleted much of the rivalries,& traditions that made it special. Yet another unbroken American treasure that society decided to "fix".

I and my daughter drove to the game from Virginia. Penn State team showed a lot of quality but their fans were disgusting with foul language and obscene finger gestures.
