Very nice gesture there Richard, well done sir! Reinforces how much easier it is with it all stripped and ideally on a roller- I loved standing up doing all my welding. I’m really impressed you found a welder that had been sprayed to match the car 😏

thanks, I am quite happy welding any position except upside down, that is just a pain. That welder is a beauty isn't it!

I have welded up old Land Rover's, old Jaguar's, an old Wolseley 1100 or 1300 TC (the worst of the lot), old Mercedes and old tractor mudguards (see video) and it is not an easy task by any means. Weld done young man (Pun intended).

Pun accepted 😋 I always find it fun when you get to the hump in the job, i.e. over half way done and you know that the light at the end of the tunnel is not a freight train approaching.

Thank you sir 👍 you sound like me! P6 is a beautiful car, had one as a lad. they can be a bastard to get right though, lasting memories of the magic carpet ride and the ker-lunk of the doors latching. Series 1 was a very pretty car too. Other projects you have on the go sound fun. You may be interested in new project that I am working on, project Haggis, from Solihull via Portugal. update by the end of the weekend

Hmm. I can’t weld so it’ll never happen but I’m not sure I’d like to pick up a job half way through... all those poorly fitting panels! And, it’ll be your fingerprints that they see :-)

I know what you mean, trouble is that pretty much any car I touch these days is half done, with patches over patches etc. #1 objective in this case was to get it as good as I could and ready for paint so the owner can enjoy!. You will like new project Haggis, pretty untouched, no spoilers

until all the steel is cold, if there is any danger of grinder sparks flying around then an hour after showering the place with hot metal usually does it 👍

nope, it is possible that two workers at Speke had an off day on the shop floor when the shell was built. To be honest I think everyone was walking on eggshells at Speke and other UK car plants in the 1970s

If I was Julian I would be quietly seething - the standard of workmanship is poor. The poor fit of the door should have been corrected by striking the base of the rear wing remains with a block of wood/hammer to open up the door gap. The wings are awful - welding looks terrible, and the distortion should have been controlled by joddling the edge of the repair panel. Yeh it was done in difficult circumstances but if you still need to put a finger under the shroud because you can't control a torch you need to leave welding alone. A bodge is a bodge and if a job is worth doing do it properly...

Shame that's the best comment you have? That work was done out of love and kindness for Julian who was terminally ill at the time and as his friends we did everything we could to make his remaining time a happy one driving his Stag when his health forced him to abandon the work he had started, We gave up our time and drove 100's of miles, working very long days to make this happen. Maybe next time you share your opinion it might be worth finding out the story behind video. For your information, Julian passed away early last year.

It’s probably as well for you that you’re not Julian as he had a terminal illness. In fact, he was so overjoyed by the efforts of his friends that he could drive his beloved car again. Typical case of a keyboard warrior spouting his lack of knowledge without knowing the facts. Shame on you.

You are almost correct, maybe some of the background behind this job were not clear, but as the other have pointed out, time was not a luxury that we thought we had. I just watched the intro to the video again and have come to the conclusion that our work was entirely justified. I wish you had been available at the time to get the car back up and running 140 miles away from home and using borrowed equipment Julian knew that the car was in need of significant work hence why he started working on it, alas his Big C diagnosis knocked us all for 6! our objective was to get the car back on the road as quickly and efficiently as possible so that he could enjoy it with his wife, sons and grandkids. Almost every panel had 5mm filler over it. Even with the t-bar off I could not move the position of the inner sill because of the 20mm angle iron welded to the inner sill be a previous repair. I firmly believe that we did our absolute best by our friend. he was delighted and was able to use the car for the next 2 years. Even drove it to his living Wake. RIP Julian
