Thanks for this. As the only real rust is where the Bat sits you might as well cut it out and weld a new piece in... you will be glad you did in the long run and it would be good for the video... as it is a common problem with VWs... Oven cleaner... it does work... Trans looks great!

Of course! I've done it to many bugs... I probably should just do it. Focus is definitely seeing it move under its own power though first! And agreed oven cleaner definitely works well

The rod is the kick down, when you want to pass mash the gas ot kicks down from 3rd to 2nd. Yup behind the panel is the gas tank. Split windows and bays always rot in the right rear corner from battery acid.

As someone else commented the rod is your "kickdown rod" I only know this because my automatic was missing this piece. lol It was tough to find one too! I did find one though & then the previous owner actually called me literally the day after I got a used one and said he found "a rod thing that must go with the bus" lol Edit: What kind of trans fluid do you use for yours?

I got a 1973 Volkswagen automatic transmission won’t go in reverse. It will go in drive. What could be wrong with it please help me.

@@clkrug2987 umm I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Make sure underneath it's actually shifting into reverse. (Manually do it with help) And see if it's the transmission or something with the levers itself
