I want to carry a spare Distributor for my 76 Bus. 1800cc fuel injected no electronic ignition. I can't seem to find a Distributor for a type 4 motor with vacuum assist, so that little space ship thing attached. Can you please tell me where I can find this?. Bus Depot and West Coast Metrics aren't sure which one goes with it. Thanks.

I have to do new jugs and pistons on my 73 vw bus. I have the parts its the time i need at the moment. But soon ill have my van on the road again. My engine is original but i had a carburetor leak and it washed out 2 cylinders bad. It washed out #1 cylinder and essentialy destroyed it.

As someone else commented the rod is your "kickdown rod" I only know this because my automatic was missing this piece. lol It was tough to find one too! I did find one though & then the previous owner actually called me literally the day after I got a used one and said he found "a rod thing that must go with the bus" lol Edit: What kind of trans fluid do you use for yours?

As a automatic bus owner as well & still learning, could you at some point take time to explain how to do timing, carb adjustments, etc? I could never find any videos with guys who have automatics! I love to learn how to do it myself.

Nice automatic! I have an automatic as well & actually enjoy driving it. I had to figure out how to get a kick rod to work and to turn my carb backwards for it to all work together. Im still a newb in this but we set my idle a little high as well. Once I put it in gear then, it drops down to a good place.

Yeah the autos are definitely interesting, but it's been a blast to drive either way.

Your videos are extremely helpful...Thank you for putting them together. I noticed that you placed a thin gasket between the jug and case. If you were to do it over again would you recommend adding RTV as well? ...or has this held up pretty great for you so far.
@hifivegarage69774 ай бұрын
Thank you!!! So far the motor has been amazing. Some people on here recommended not using the gaskets. If anything use the copper spray like you would on a head gasket I would definitely not use rtv. Thank you for watching.

The wire in question is probably for the heater booster fan. You'd have a wire directly from the battery, another wire directly from the alternator, and a 3rd wire (red with white stripe) that goes to the fuse box.
@MH-ev3wr4 ай бұрын
Also, is there a reason you removed the cooling flaps from the fan housing? Similarly the thermostat, pulley, and cable?
@hifivegarage69774 ай бұрын
This motor didn't have any on it and I only had pieces from the other motor. Decided that being in New mexico ide give it a shot without
@pastblaster328527 күн бұрын
@@hifivegarage6977 You just made a BIG mistake leaving out those flaps ........Just because the geniuses before you left them out does not mean it is ok to follow suit .....Learn how systems work so you can make good decisions ..... Besides not having a motor that will warm up correctly day or night regardless of the state you live in and all the benefits of that like better interior heat in the cold times and even motor expansion of all it's parts , by leaving out the flap on the left side that goes over the oil cooling tower that lays on it's side you just goofed .....How is the fan blown air supposed to make a 90 degree turn downward to go through the oil cooler's vertical openings without that flap ? It won't ....The cooling air will just fly over the top of the cooler ....If you had that flap installed which lays like your cupped hand when in the warmed up position, that flap down, you will notice a gap under the flap's pivot point .....Some of the cooling air will go into that slot and the cupped shape will force that air downward through the cooling tower's vertical openings ..... The original style warm up thermostats are now available new from a great place called "Awesome Powdercoat " ......He also has a pretty good rap about how these work generally on his site ...... Do not try to use the Mexican style thermostats on any aircooled VW motor .......

It's easiest to not even deal with the push rod tubes until the heads are on and torqued down. The tubes can go on and off without touching the heads.

Great videos! Any tips/recommendations regarding mounting the Type 4 engine on the engine stand. I have seen posts in forums about how the mounts put stress on the transmission holes. Thanks in advance.
@hifivegarage69775 ай бұрын
I though I showed how I mounted it but I can't find it. Either way I just uses a normal engine stand used the top 2 mounts and drill out where the bottom ones would mount (look in the videos you will see) and I never had issues. They also sell pre made mounts but I know they are expensive that's why I made my own

You need a mechanics stethoscope...or a long screw driver to touch to different parts of the engine and then hold against your ear. Lots of things can be making that noise. When you adjusted your valves did you double check if they are hydraulic lifters? Mine are Porsche hydraulic lifters that knock before warm up. And when the oil needs changing.

Maybe the transmission seals? I had a Geo Tracker (Suzuki Samurai) jeep that Lucas transmission additive restored and worked great. Added it about every 10,000 miles. No issues. Possibly when you added fluid that reduced your noise. Or maybe not. Peace
