This was Willie G's styling getting a little bit ahead of it's time. The "siamese" pipes are open where they are welded, and give the engine a few extra HP. The regular 1979 XLH's got all the leftover siamese pipes used on these XLCR's, with the addition of chrome heat shields- Most owners got rid of them. Those old Goodyears will definitely need to be replaced if you intend to ride this bike a lot.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles5 ай бұрын
Very cool mark!!! Thanks for the info on the Siamese pipes!!! Yeah I’ve already spoke to him. He’s gonna do something about the tires. Thanks again!! 👍🍺

Slick, here's some fun facts. Poor sales were both from people trying to not only reason with the AMF stigma, but the, at the time astronomical high price of $3595 in 1977. A Suzuki GS750 which done everything better was only, $2199. In 1978 the Motor Company did offer a dual seat option, very few opted for this. Sales were so poor, dealers DEEPLY discounted them, even offering specials like $2900 out the door ! They were tested to run the 1/4 mile as quick as 13.08 which was fairly respectful for the day. The triple disc brakes actually were horrible, blamed on pad materials, and a standard Sporty with single front/rear drum would out stop it by a significant margin. 201 feet compared to 165. Yes, there's actually some good news, a nice one can bring anywhere from 12 to 20 plus thousand $. T.S. RACING 🏁
@t.s.racing5 ай бұрын
Yes the pipes were open under the weld. A Asian Engineer designed them, and " in theory " made more power, but never actually proven by the Motor Company. Ching Lo was the cats name if I remember correctly.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles5 ай бұрын
Wow TS racing thanks for all the fun facts!!! Great info appreciate it!! And yes, yesterday my buddy told me about in 1978 how They offered the two up seat on the XLCR, and I said that would be horrible. Lol 👍🍺

Brother, finished balancing the crank for a friend's Shovel, and found you talking about the frame. Here's what I have from what's left of my frontal cortex of memory. First, Willy G offered up his personal XL that was loaned to Execs, a new bike every year for the top brass actually. Two Engineers collaborated on the XLCR, Mr. Moderow who I know nothing about, and a Machinist/Drag Racer Jim Haubert. Because the seat/tail section was derived from the dirt track XR750, these guys modified the XL rear frame to work in conjunction with the tail piece. That's really the only frame difference from what I know. Q It's a beautiful piece unfortunately WAY before its time, yet way behind the times. Slick, if you ever come across a XR 1000, I have cash. I always have a XR 1000 fund around. Or the old lady has to hit the streets....... RIDE ON
@SlickHeadCustomCycles5 ай бұрын
Again awesome info dude!!! Appreciate it!!! Yeah I read too that it was from Willy G’s personal collection of what got the ball rolling on this bike. And you just gave me an amazing idea. If I was to put my old lady out on the streets,I could get more bikes, so thank you for that !! 😂😂 and I’ll keep an eye out for ya on the XR 1000. But I’d probably buy it and keep it for myself. Sorry.😂 👍🍺

Fun video. When I was working in an indy shop in Austin, Texas in the late 70's there was a XLCR being ridden around there. The shop I was at did performance work, I had a Kawasaki KZ1000 that was fast, all the bike mags complained that the XLCR was heavy and slow compared to the fast bikes that could be bought for a lot less money. I liked the looks but liked speed better. Now I have a Sportster with a 1978 XLCR frame but is an ex drag racer, not sure how much of the original parts are still on it. It came with the rear set pegs bar as spare parts. It is a project bike, I'm old so it will take awhile to get it on the road. The tank, rear fender and seat were swapped out long ago. I was planning to go to the swap meet in Clarksville, Tn today but didn't make it so the parts hunt will take longer and cost more.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles5 ай бұрын
Wow that’s really cool warren!!! Wish i had me an XLCR of my own, but I’m working on purchasing my first panhead!!! Good luck to you with your hunt!! 👍🍺 SLICK
@warrenp20225 ай бұрын
@@SlickHeadCustomCycles Thanks, my Panhead is down with minor transmission problems but a few hours when I am feeling energetic will fix that. I have had the Pan since 1998 and it is fairly unreliable. It is an 88 cu in aftermarket parts engine in a 1981 FXE bike. I had the KZ1000 from 1978 until I made the mistake of selling it in 2003, it was fast, reliable, took me anywhere I wanted to go and never broke down. A Pan, from my experience should not be your primary ride.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles5 ай бұрын
Being unreliable, in my opinion, is it’s just not built and set up right. And it a good thing I own seven other bikes. Gives me plenty of time to set up my future panhead the right way. You should check out more of my channel, i own a 1940 UL Flathead, a 1968 triumph chopper, a 1970 XLCH ironhead all original, a 1979 XLCH ironhead chopper i built myself, a 1992 Dyna super glide , a 2011 road king classic, a 2014 honda XR 650L, an a recently acquired 1986 yamaha seca not running!!! 👍🍺
@warrenp20225 ай бұрын
@@SlickHeadCustomCycles I have been watching your channel off and on for awhile. You have very nice and CLEAN bikes, some envy here. The Pan went through a lot of shops until I retired and started learning how it should be set up. One shop, after a big bill for an engine rebuild sent it back and I could kick it through with three fingers on the kicker. Not all shops were bad but retirement means less money in my case. So alot of KZbin, bike websites, shop and parts manuals and more tools. Being basically self taught I make mistakes also but I am learning.
