Amazing that the 49ers were 2-14 for the year and would be winning the Super Bowl a little more than three years later. When Walsh became head coach, he inherited quite a piece of work (just like Chuck Noll did nine years earlier with Pittsburgh) and did an amazing turnaround. 1978 had some good games on MNF. R.I.P. Candlestick Park. PS: Thank you for the Moscone-Milk news coverage clips.

Actually, the 49ers by this point already had some key players of those first two Super Bowl teams. It took Walsh time to get the rest of the pieces.

My dad and I, along with a couple of friends, attended this game! We sat in some of Candlestick's worst sets, in the lower corner of the end zone. It was really quite the yawner of a game; the Steelers were 11 point favorites as I recall, so they covered. One thing I remember: a large banner over the upper deck railing that read, in big red letters, BLANK HOWARD. It stayed up until well into the third quarter, when a couple of guys in 49er blazers came up there and ripped it down.

At this point in the season, the Steelers needed an easy game like this. After a hot 7-0 start, they stumbled in tough losses to Houston and L.A. Their offense was sputtering. This game allowed them to get back on track, and the rest of the season they went 8-0, including the Super Bowl.

49er receiver Mike Shumann tells the story about how he was lined up across from Pittsburgh cornerback Mel Blount. Blount was taunting him, yelling "Where do you think you're going, son?" Shumann replied "Wherever you want me to go, Mr. Blount." Hard to believe this 49er team would be champs in just three years.

By the end of this season, the 49ers were in obvious need of a new quarterback. If you examine the 1979 NFL draft, it's absolutely amazing how many times *several* teams (e.g. Chicago, Denver, etc.) who were equally desperate for a new quarterback *passed over* Montana before San Francisco finally selected him at the very end of the 3rd round.

He only played in the first 10 games of the season, missed the last four starts including this MNF game against the Steelers. I believe he received more press on his return for the '79 season (possibly because of his announced retirement) than he did on debut for the scarlet and nugget gold in '78 I more so remembered it being rumored that he wanted to finish up here, rather than his actual coming, arriving. That, and as I mentioned, the grass being put in at Candlestick for '79. Well, it's all gone now...
