I always found last century that the Goodison derby was more exciting than the Anfield derby games. Liverpool tended to dominate at home but Everton games battled too & fro.

I was a season ticket holder at Goodison back then and recall this game vividly. Gordon Lee was always judged unfairly in my opinion with the Catterick years. Yet this Everton team with Colin Todd, Martin Dobson, and Bob Latchford were a match for most teams. He came very close to the FA Cup final in 1977.and 1980, and only a glaring miss by Imre Varadi in the FA Cup quarter final against Man City when Everton were 2-1 up late in the game cost them another place in the FA Cup semi final in 1981. After a defeat in the replay with Man City they lost 9 of the 11 final league games and dropped from 6th to 16 in the table. Gordon was sacked and replaced by Howard Kendall. While this Liverpool team, along with Notts Forest dominated English and European trophy's for the next 5 years

So close for Lee including the League cup saga with Villa, 3rd and 4th place finishes and of course the 2 semi final defeats in the FA CUP, both agonizing replay defeats.

I remember my dad listening to the Liverpool vs Everton game on Radio Merseyside & watching the over officious policeman ushering John Motson off the pitch on Final score on Grandstand. What a fantastic match & atmosphere compared to today’s lacklustre atmospheres
