The 1977 was the last year the Baltimore Colts were relevant. From 1978 to the curtain call on December 18th, 1983 they were on life-support until Bob Irsay pulled the plug on March 29th 1984 .

The season ended once bert jones separated his shoulder. The 78 colts were doomed from the start

“1978 won’t happen again.” Well, it didn’t-it got worse. Much worse.

Can't believe Colts gave up Raymond Chester, Joe Washington, Ted Hendricks, John Dutton, Lyle Blackwood, No wonder they never went anywhere after 1970.

They won the division in three consecutive years but unfortunately they couldn’t get past Pittsburgh and Oakland.

The 78 Colts had a rough schedule as well. In 13 out of their 16 games, the 78 Colts played an opponent who would finish with a .500 or better record. In 8 games, the opposing team made the playoffs. The 78 Colts beat 2 division winners (Denver, NE). They also beat 2 other teams that were in the playoff race to the end. That said, the defense gave up the most points of any NFL team. The offense scored the least points in the AFC and the second least in the NFL. The Colts could just have easily gone 2-14 or 1-15, maybe even 0-16. 5 wins was a good total considering how poorly the team played at times.

Problem was ... After 3 division titles and playoff appearances ... 1978 ( I was 15) was like someone in the family slowly dying! 1979 confirmed that we weren't any good. 1980 was better ... After that ... I slowly died as they eventually moved.

Also, they went as far as their talent could take them in 1975-77. The Cardinals were in the same boat. Not a knock - Baltimore, Houston, and New England played in a murderous AFC and being a playoff team back then was a great accomplishment as even the non playoff teams won 10 games

In their two games against the Dolphins the Colts scored 8-68 to the eventual wild-card Dolphins.

They were shut out in the first two games. A disastrous beginning to a tragic season. The loss of Bert Jones had a major impact.

1978 was the beginning of the end. 26-62-1 from 1978-83. No winning seasons. A move to Indy following. Ouch.

Baltimore's quarterback at the beginning of the season was Mike Kirkland who was absolutely brutal
@bryanthomsen55512 жыл бұрын
@@ciesaro Then Bill Troup took over the following week in a 42-to-nothing shellacking against the Dolphins in Baltimore. They had to make do with a pair of unproven quarterbacks in place of Jones. Had it not been for his recurring shoulder injuries, one can only wonder what kind of a team the Colts would have been with a healthy Jones at quarterback.

Gave up Raymond Chester in a horrible trade. Lydell Mitchell was traded. Jone separates his shoulder in a meaningless preseason game.

As soon as Joe Thomas left, the team went right down the tubes from a personnel aspect. Marchibroda had no idea what he was doing on that front.
