We painstakingly synced this recording of the ABC TV broadcast with the iconic WTAE radio call of the late, great Jack Fleming and Myron Cope. Visit our website at www.mcmillenandwife.com for more classic games!
Game summary: Bradshaw and Swann star as the Steelers beat the living daylights out of the Niners on Monday Night Football. The Steelers amass 212 rushing yards and Bradshaw, after an early interception, bounces back to carve up San Fran's secondary with relative ease, connecting on a trio of TD passes. NFL receiving leader Lynn Swann is particularly devastating, hauling in 8 catches for 134 yds and 2 TDs.
The Steel Curtain relentlessly torments Niner QB Scott Bull, intercepting his very first pass (en route to a 5 INT night) while delivering some truly terrifying shots, sacking him 4 times for 39 yds. The Niners are clearly outclassed, but the refs seem to be trying to even things out, penalizing Pittsburgh 13 times for 102 yds while San Fran is flagged just 1 time for 5 yds.
Trailing 17-0, the Niners finally catch a break when Rocky Bleier fumbles away a handoff inside the Steeler 5, setting up a 2-yd TD run for San Fran. On Pittsburgh's ensuing drive, Bleier -- who is not known as a fumbler -- shockingly coughs it up again near midfield. But Ham soon restores order with his second interception of the night, Bradshaw promptly hits Stallworth for a TD, and the 49ers never threaten again.
While this game is supposedly recorded from the source tape, the original broadcast was very blurry (whoever taped it had some definite antenna problems), so the quality isn't fantastic. At halftime, ABC news provides updates on the shocking murder earlier that day of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone by a disgruntled former staffer.

Yes, the last season it had Astroturf. That was replaced with natural grass, after protests from Giants outfielder Bobby Bonds. "If cows don't eat it, I don't want to play on it!"

Interesting to see the telecast of this game, as I was there. And, considering the game was locally blacked out and VCRs were prohibitively expensive at the time, no home taping of the game was available. The weather was cold. I got down on the field after the game was was shocked how HARD the playing surface was. It was a thin carpet layer on concrete. My friend that supplied the tickets got drunk during the game, we momentarily lost contact of each other after the game, only to find him beaten up on the pavement. Apparently, he got into a drunken brawl with another discontented 49ers fan. The battery was stolen out of my car. Luck had it that a tow-truck operator came by [this was prior to having cell-phones to call for assistance] and had a used battery he sold me, which got me home. It was a memorable evening.

Holy cow. 😮 Was Candlestick Park in a bad area? Sounds more like Oakland. 😂 I’ve been to San Fran multiple times, but I’ve never been to a sporting event there.

@@mcmillenandwife Candlestick bordered on the Bay View/Hunters Point districts, both were notoriously high-crime areas back then. A person would have been a fool to have walked the streets in those areas after dark.

Nov 27, 1978 when George Moscone and Harvey Milk were slain by an assassin. Most who were around then probably remember where they were at or doing that day.. Many consider the 1978 season to be the peak of the Steelers of the 1970s. The 49ers finished at 2-14 but would turn it around in a few years.

OK, you two would know..... In the Fall of 1977, I swear the Steelers played the bengals on MNF....and Bradshaw did the punting in the game. I also recall some fans dressed up as Halloween was coming. Can you verify my 5th-grade memory that it was Bradshaw called into emergency service as the punter in that game? As you may remember, many old-school quarterbacks, like two of my boyhood heroes - Bradshaw and Pastorini, regularly served as team punters. I was a 5th grader cheering the Steelers from my parents' living room on Edmondson Avenue in Baltimore, Md.

Bradshaw punted 5 times for 173 yards in 1980 vs. Cinci in a 17-16 loss (Matt Bahr missed 2 FGs and a PAT). Here's a link to the game on our site: www.mcmillenandwife.com/1980_Steelers_16_vs_Bengals_17.html

Agreed, Fleming was amazing. Best in the biz as far as I’m concerned. For me, it was their dynamic as a broadcasting team that was truly legendary. They worked together so well. This was my favorite era of Myron, when he was still himself and not the sometimes overly goofy caricature he became in later years. They were so fun to listen to.
