Most of what I've learned about fixing guitars I've learned from you. I've done everything from doing a fret leveling to crowning and polishing. I use your parameters when I do a setup and over the literal years of following you, I think I've gotten pretty good at it. I just successfully changed the neck on my MIM Strat using techniques I learned here. I have to have been following you from, what I gather, is a couple of years after you started doing this so I guess you could say I'm a loyal fan. I used to be a member of the Facebook group until I couldn't stand Zuck's dishonesty anymore, and now that I'm retired I really can't support the Patreon anymore. But, I keep watching and will continue as long as at least one of us is still here.😄

I like the shape of the Les Paul. I like the shape of the Strat. too - they are different, but I like them both. Thank you to Les and the guys at Fender and Dave too, of course. 🙂 I have certainly gained enough confidence to dress the worn frets on my own guitars - I've done 2 so far - a Partscaster and a Washburn superStrat. Both have come up waaaaay better than they were before and I'm grateful to you, Dave, for being one of the online gurus who showed me what to do - thanks so much !! You're a Star. On the plus side, it must also be noted that the likelihood of my contemplating bringing them over to you for the fret-job, from here in south west England, was *zero* !! ;-) All the best, dude, from Bristol, UK

I have a '79 LP GoldTop so I got a 'thing' for 70's LP's, mainly because it survived my teen's and laughed at me for trying to break its neck - lost count of the number of times it slid off the amp....or table...or chair! 3-pce maple necks - I need to thank the guy that thought that one up. Before DWoFS, I would only change the strings and clean it - regularly. I know to some people, its only a tool. But to see the amount of crap on that Custom..I would have been embarassed to take it anywhere, never mind to someone I wanted to do work on it.

Patent 2737842 is actually Les Paul's (as Lester Polfus) patent for a "combined bridge and tail piece for stringed instruments." I watched Keith Williams' "short history" on the Les Paul and he mentions that Gibson would purposely put the wrong patent number on humbuckers, even after they got their patent approved, to discourage competitors for looking up the patent drawings for their pickups. Interesting stuff. The tail piece in the drawing looks like the same one used on the original LP gold tops.

I think they used that patent number baseplate from the mid-70s through the early 90s, eventually being replaced with a Gibson USA stamped baseplate. It’ll give you a general idea of the era, but unfortunately not necessarily the pickup. Tim Shaw PAFs came just a bit later and replaced these t-tops. In GENERAL (but not 100%), late 70s t-tops will have Ts on the bobbins and a date ink stamp like “MAR 12 1979”. Shaws (1980 and later, I believe) will GENERALLY not have Ts and will have ink stamps like 383 381 (from 81 on, in my experience). All that said, there are construction ways to identify them and tons of anomalies out there regarding the bobbins and stamps…so everything I’ve blabbed about is just a general guideline. Both are great pickups!!

I remember trying a '79 Les Paul in a shop in the summer of 1980. G-string popped out of the nut a couple of times, and on the whole, it made the Japanese alternatives look pretty good by comparison. I suppose a lot of the duff axes from that era were put right by luthiers, so they eventually became decent.

The economy sucks Dave. Our news media likes to falsely equate inflation with a "hot economy". They aren't the same thing. Our GDP growth is feeble. Consumer debt continues to spiral. Bankruptcies are on the rise. And it's worse in Toronto (because of the economic harm of our lockdowns and subsequent slow return to business) than it is in smaller centres. In short - it's not you Dave!
