To get the cable jacket out of the "perch" pull the lever to the handlebar then slowly release while pulling on the cable, once clear swing it out of the way and it's free.

I was on a 78 like that in the middle of nowhere western Kansas and one of the spark plugs fouled out. Four qts of racing oil in the saddle bag. No spark plugs. I think that god led me to a weld shop that wasn't on my route because as soon as I walked in there was a sand blasting cabinet.

It gets real dark down by the transmission where the clutch cablle connects. I had one fail in the middle of the day on my '84 FLH and it was so bright out I couldn't see much and a flashlight really didn't help. It would had been easier to do in the dark of the night with a flashlight. It's a simple job---if you can see.

That and there’s not a lot of room to work in there. Also that area is great for trapping old oil and a lot of grime which makes it even harder to see everything.
