Maserati has always been known for cars of exceptional luxury, elegance and performance, demonstrated by the choice of Quattroporte models as the official cars of the Italian President.
On 14 December 1979 the Maserati Quattroporte 3rd generation, in both automatic and manual gear-shift, was presented to Italian President Sandro Pertini. The ceremony, held at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, was attended by the Minister of Industry and Trade, the Rt Hon Antonio Bisaglia, and the CEO of Maserati, Alejandro de Tomaso.
The Maserati Quattroporte 3rd generation (1979), designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was the first completely new car to be designed during the de Tomaso management period (1976-1993), and featured lines inspired by the first, 1963, version of the Quattroporte, although with a less sporty and more formal personality.
The Quattroporte 3rd generation was characterised by a luxurious and refined interior, and by the V8 engine, in variants of 4.2 L with 255 hp and 4.9 L with 280 hp. The top speed was 220 km/h. The car remained on the market from 1979 until 1990, with a total of 2,145 units sold.
In 1986 the "Royale" version was launched: it was a restyling with interior upgrades including soft leather seats and lavish use of burr walnut on the dashboard and door panels. Other distinctive features were the radio telephone in the compartment between the front seats and the small stow-away folding table in the rear doors. The Quattroporte Royale was equipped with a powerful 4.9 L V8 engine with 300 hp and just 51 were built withthis trim.
In 1982, the Italian President's General Secretariat placed an order with Maserati for the construction of an armoured Quattroporte for the President's use.
In 1983 the Modena firm supplied a Quattroporte, in “Dark Aquamarine” colour with beige velvet interior, to President Sandro Pertini, and it became his car of choice for institutional engagements.
One of the car's original features was a large ashtray with pipe holder between the rear seats: this was requested by the President himself, and Maserati modified the rear bench to create it. The car also featured a bar cabinet, a telephone system, and an intercom for communication with people outside the car.
The car's cabin was completely armoured and bullet-proof, with high-strength manganese steel plating. The windows were also armoured, 31 mm thick and made of polycarbonate with 4 electrically controlled windows.
The roof could be opened electrically above the rear seats to allow the President to stand up and greet crowds while on the move; a special handle was installed on the back of the right front seat to make this upright position safer and more comfortable.
The Head of State used the Quattroporte 3rd generation on all public occasions, including his historic visit to the Ferrari factory in Maranello on 29 May 1983. On that occasion, ceremonial etiquette demanded that once the car had entered the plant, the host, Enzo Ferrari should approach the presidential vehicle. However, Ferrari remained motionless about ten metres from the car. The elderly President Pertini got out of the Quattroporte and walked over to the Ferrari boss.
Enzo Ferrari did not move because of the long-standing local rivalry between the Prancing Horse and Trident brands.
In the 1980s, other famous personalities also chose the Quattroporte 3rd generation as their means of transport. Perhaps the best known was Modenese tenor Luciano Pavarotti; there are famous photographs of him in his Quattroporte outside La Scala in Milan.
Today, the Quattroporte is still the President of Italy's official car: on 2 June this year, on Republic Day, the current President Sergio Mattarella used the Quattroporte 6th generation with exterior colour “Blu Istituzionale" specially created by Maserati. The car has interior trims in “Black Piano” (black lacquered wood) teamed with full-grain Pieno Fiore leather. Particular care was taken over the soundproofing of the cabin to ensure the upmost of comfort on board the car in all conditions of use. The rear of the console bears the official crest of the Italian Republic. The Quattroporte built for the Italian President was specifically modified to achieve the highest safety standards for cars intended for particular institutional uses.
The powerplant is the famous 530 hp bi-turbo V8 with peak torque of 650 Nm.

Auto da viaggio, un salotto viaggiante. Non semplice da guidare velocemente, Ampiamente sottovalutata nonostante non fosse esente da guasti soprattutto la versione automatica.. l’ho comprata quasi per errore ora mi manca moltissimo.

This car is a Quattroporte "Royale" which was produced only from 1986 on! The production of 53 Royale cars ended in 1990, so the books says.! But I guess, maybe except for 2 or 3 exceptions, it ended fall/winter of 1987. Because 1987/8 Maserati presented a well, more refined 4 door version of the 425 with the Coupe 228 2.8 liter engine (the greatest V6 with 250 HP in the range of the Quattroporte) to replace the expensive to poduce Quattroporte. To lower the production coasts De Tomaso take the big 4 door out of the list and create the 430 with an equal richness of luxury. (I think that the shown car is probably one of these lasts because of the similarities of details from 88/89 430 production cars).For this new status of the only representative of the 4 door exclusive line, he highly pay intention that the 430 is noticeably much more expensive as the 418/422/425 and had noticeable features that makes distance to the mentioned models like leather AND wood (more than even the Royale!) driving wheel, wood in the middle console where the radio sits and on the exterior, double exhaust pipe right and left like the Quattroporte, and not two on only one side, bigger tridents on the fueler caps and 7J rims instead of the 6,5J for the "little" under 430 models (I think until 1990). (And for all modells from 1988 alloy rims with a closed look like the Royale rims with hubcaps) ...and not to forget an incorrect but powerful name 4 30 (with only 2,8 cubic inches) PS: Interesting: Ian Callum copied the design of the only on the Royale attached hubcaps for the Aston Martin DB6 in the first two years. He knows where he can find tasteful styling ;-)

Interesting: No other luxury model from Maserati from these De Tomaso days had a wooden dashboard. Only the 228! Not even the "Royae"l as you can see in this video 1:44. Thanks!

These late cars have some minor changes in the exterior. First the grille.The frame is a little bit wider and the angle of the grille is a bit slanted . The second: The bumpers are now without the deep bone-ish grooves and so they look a little bit more modern. The colour: "Gun Metal Grey" fits perfectly! Imagine at those late production cars you look at a cars whose original design was nearly 15 years old!!

2:40 This seem to be an idea from todays standard! Think of the Toshiba laptops matching to the production year of the car. They weight 2,5 Kilo! I´m a little skeptical if these nice wooden folding tables will endure this test. ;-)

1:46 That is the thing with the knobs. If something missing from a radio, it´s hard to find exactly the right one. Use ebay with the exact radio name and number. No advertisment! Only own expiriences ;-)

Italians produce small city cars or supersports cars. Why don't Italians produce comfort-oriented cars today?

The Fiat 500x and Jeep renegade are quite comfortable, like Fiat Tipo. Even the standard turbodiesel and less sporty versions of giulia and stelvio are relaxing to drive

@@alonsobrosmann4300 Because both of those cars are not selling at all: Renault talisman apart from french ministers has been sold in just few hundreds around Europe, it was a cheap choice for Renault because this car was already built in China only for that market and Renault just decided to refine it a bit for Europe: bad choice and it isn't working, in few years we will buy brand new second hand talismans for few thousand euros, because it's an invisible car. On the other hand Ford just decided to stop the mondeo production for same reasons: people wants to buy SUVs and at least only SPORT 4 door sedans, like Bmw, Audi, Alfa, Mercs, etc. So the mondeo is dead and it will be replaced by another Suv. Today people like SUVs ( i don't actually) and the best way to waste money is to create and launch comfortable non-sport fairly priced sedans that absolutely nobody wants.

@@emilianodelbue1665 In fact, the first choice of people in D class vehicles is Mercedes BMW Audi. Fiat is preferred in Renault and Ford C-class cars, but outside Europe (Eastern Europe, Russia, the Balkans) there are buyers of vehicles such as this Renault Talisman Ford Mondeo. I mean, the first choice of the person to buy a class D (entry-level luxury family car) is not Alfa Romeo Gulia or Fiat 500 X.

@@alonsobrosmann4300 I totally agree with it, but there are marketing reasons that sometimes don't seem to be completely correct: we do have to remember that it's quite a long time that Fiat is totally outside that segment, after the not successfull Croma, it's more than 20 years that Fiat isn't making a real D seg. sedan. It didn't fit with their plans and they did prefer to use Alfa and Lancia brands for that cathegory back then too. Today they won't recreate that sort of car at all, if not with something in common with Peugeot, but it's quite unlikely even thinking to eastern market
