We check out Barry's one-off Moonraker Concept built by Ford for the 1979 Sydney Motor Show in the James Bond 007 Theme for the then-current Moonraker movie. We also take a look at XD and XE ESP Falcons, an XB Hardtop and ZC Fairlane
At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

Ford made more money from replacement door handles than the cars themselves I think. I broke the drivers one on an xb. I had an xf for 10 years and became quite an expert at changing those. Best time was 25 minutes.

If you'd changed the bushes in the hinges then the handles wouldn't have broken. I've owned XD and two XF models. I never had an issue with the XD because it was only six years old when I bought it but my first XF was considerably older and only had one back door with a handle. I replaced the bushes in all the hinges and only fitted three handles and never had to replace them

@@MartintheTinman Yes. The bushes were plastic and they didn't last. You can get brass bushes nowadays to eliminate the design flaw. Still have to keep them lubed though.

Good old days. Me and my mates did that a few times when parents went away. It took us 15 minutes to park them back exactly where it was, keys back exactly how they were. First 24 hours when they got back was always stressful, we had to assume the old man didnt write down the kms.

Bought my first XD - '81 351 ex-police car - in 1985. Only had it for a couple of years as I was young and stupid and didn't look after it. Fast forward to July 2020 and I finally get my second - a 250 crossflow (soon to be a 351 Cleveland) that's been garaged for 20 years. Things will be different this time. I'll be taking care of this one. Thanks heaps for the XD and XE features Glenn.

I was doing my apprenticeship when these XD & XEs were new(started in early ‘76) Not to bag the memories because it was fun times but all I can remember is that they were problematic on a number of levels. I’d be very surprised if much worked on any of them now because way back then very little did, from switches to a/c systems to breaking plastic(oh the warping and breaking plastic!), overheating engines and leaking headlights. Not my favourite cars. Mind you Holdens output at the time was no better.

I have an XD SPac barn door, delivery V8 panel Van, only two both in Artic blue were made as evaluation units. Ford Australia had the 4 speed & Ford NZ the T bar auto. In Feb 1980 they sent them around the dealerships to gauge public opinion,then discontinued the project only offering a V8 in the Sundowner. The one in Australia was dissolved and my one in NZ was sold to Armour guard so it survived, currently I'm performing a full restoration and this story/history needs to be told since it's the rarest Falcon panel Van ever built.

I owned an XE Falcon 3-3 four speed for about 5&half years. No aircon. No power steering. An awful and sluggish car around town, but great on the open road. Those were the days when V8 XD's, XE's and Fairlanes were still everywhere (you know......the ones that sounded like real V8's?), yet there I was in my 3-3 six........and as jealous as hell. I toyed with the idea of doing a V8 transplant, but just never got around to it, plus there was a lack of time and readily available funds. An original ZK Fairlane with a 302 would be my dream car if my mortgage was out of the way. I have a few other cars lying around as well..... taking up time, money and space.

Shameful display of ignorance from these two guys - the XA-XC 2 door Falcons & Fairmonts were Hardtops, not coupes. This is just continuing the lie that has saturated the naming convention of this model. Glenn actually calls them both Hardtop and coupe here in the same show. Ford never called them "coupes". The body type is Hardtop or 2-DR SED (two door sedan) as shown on the compliance plate. I have seen a Landau advertising brochure calling it a "Personal Luxury Coupe" but this is just an offhand reference to the two door shape. The body is a pillarless hardtop with wind-up rear windows. This ignorant use of the word "coupe" is so ingrained in Ford psyche that it has become truth and if you dare to tell them the truth you are likely to get a contemptuous retort at the minimum or a punch in the head at the worst. As the Axis powers in WW2 said about propaganda, if you tell a lie often enough and for long enough, it becomes 'truth' in the consciousness of the masses. This is typical Australian apathy and stupidity. Valiant owners are the same with their VF VG hardtop models - most still calling them "coupes". British and American car aficionados would view this apathy with a degree of scorn. Because it just is not correct. It's not just an affectionate label coined by Australians, because if you ask them what they mean or why they call it that, they will look at you as if you are stupid. This is pure ignorance. It's possible the motoring press and racing commentators of the day kept calling them coupes and didn't help the situation. An example of how this word is so ingrained in the Ford man's mind can be seen by a particular GT shop in Victoria, who no doubt view themselves as the reference to go to for information on GTs as they have "Lessons" on their website. They have, on their website, a picture of a GT hardtop compliance plate showing "2DRSED" and demonstrating this as an example of a typing error - a mistake in stamping by the factory! But surprisingly they don't show a picture of a plate with COUPE stamping.
@GlennEverittMasterofMachines
@GlennEverittMasterofMachines 4 жыл бұрын
You're the first to make such an in-depth point on all this, and I believe you are 100% correct! My problem is not so much ignorance, but more about the very issue you have used here, 'ingrained'! As a youngster growing up in the car scene, not once did I ever hear of anyone call them a hardtop in general conversation! It was always coupe! And that was back in the 80's! So this issue dates way back. Hardtop sounds so much nicer and I'll be sure to use the term from here on, because as you have rightly pointed out, that is the correct term!

Lucky enough ye right more like he has so much money and then paid bugger all to buy it off the owners waited till they were desperate for cash and then said i will buy it from you and told not one person, there's no way at all that these days you can buy any of these cars and pay like what is on gumtree right now for a XD 6 cylinder Fairmont for 3K? More like he paid that for those car when he first got them and now you have to sell you home to get a XB coup? I fuken knew it brought it as part of a deceased estate ,old man died then brought it for chips? this bloke will be cursed for life for sure karma always has its way of getting back to those who rip people off? Landau's are going for around 50 to 70K for a original km car and they still need work paint trim and engine and other running gear to be fixed and record properly all new better parts for everything, like were talking around 30K to get running gear sorted and then paint and trim so around 50K all up for a concourse condition car no matter which ford it is and thats the problem for ford owners they make out like they are worth more than life itself, more like 1/2 the value of what is advertised, eg: the XY GTHO with no running gear over 450K, whf, really no chance of having the original engine ,buy a original ford usa Shebly for a new model for less than that in fact you can get a dick johnson new mustang for less than that? Fuking ripp off murchants no matter whos looks at it thats the real truth about ford owners?

You are right when it comes to prices of cars these days, they are out of most peoples reach, but you are wrong about Barry the owner of these cars. I've known him for years and he's worked hard to get where he is today, started his business with nothing and built into a very successful entity, so he can enjoy his passion for cars. He's one of the most generous people I know. I first met him when I was detailing cars for a living many years ago and he was the only person I ever knew that pay you substantially more than than the asking price for your services out of pure kindness and appreciation of a good job, and he wouldn't take no for an answer.

A lot of those ESP had the heavy cast Nascar prototype blocks in them. Ford cast them in Geelong for the yanks but they were prone to fracture with high dynamic revs. Not much good for a Nascar punching 8000 all day. They also ran the blocks out in some of the 351 Broncos as well. Regards Steve.

My parents had a ZC Fairlane when I was in high school. Dad upgraded (if you could call it that) to a 76? ZH Fairlane but my dad and I pulled out the 351 from the ZC for a mate. Great memories of doing something destructive (while learning about engines) with my dad.

Wherever I drive i get compliments, and ppl hanging out beside their cars alongside taking photos or video. Every show I get heaps of ppl crowding around appreciating my car and asking questions. The xe ghia STILL looks classy and refined decades later. I still love Xds too. But the xe ghia is a step forward in design and function. Youre entitled to an opinion and your opinion. @@kimbarling4213 if you're going to take so much stock in how the "public" reacts, you need a revaluation on your personal value system! I admit, I'm more than a little dismayed at how little reaction my NC Fairlane garners out on the road. For some reason young girls in their late teens and early 20s are among the few who have noticed it. Quality over quantity eh?

@@jamesfrench7299 To say I have to re- evaluate my " value system " is evident that you have absolutely NO IDEA WHO I AM and what I stand for in principles, ethics, values and loyalty. As for your comments about the public appreciating my xe esp. I'm not in control of how other ppl in the public behave. But clearly they respect and value / appreciate MY car. It seems that you may be jealous id say is the real truth. I gave you a fair diplomatic reply b4 But you had to insult me as all keyboard cowards do. Final say : Thats why in the past 24 hrs the final factory build v8 xe esp went for $355k yes 355 thousand dollars on Grayson online auction.
