1980 45 hp Chrysler - Crank No Start - P3

This is what happens …a lot of cranking but no start. Always vent your tank, set your throttle to fast idle warmup and us fuel stabilizer. Also fog your motor before long storage. The owner took this boat to the lake hoping for a great day but instead could not get her started. He brought it to me and after a couple of routine tests started up and idled great.
If you fog your motor and use fuel stabilizer you can bet your motor will be trouble free when it’s time to use it again.

I went to the Lake with my Chrysler 15 horse. I pulled the choke like I always do once and then kept it in. I spent 10 minutes trying to start the thing. Normally it’s not that long but I’m still getting to know the motor. After 5 minutes I noticed all the fuel leaking out through the back. I realized it had flooded and didn’t need to use the choke after 1 time. I don’t run my motor dry but keep 91 octane and run it a few times a month and live in a dry climate area. I then kept that choke off and throttled up to get all the gas out and it fired up no problem. 10 minutes of embarrassment at the boat launch! A guy did ask me if I had the choke on. I totally overdid it with that advice!

Bebe’s Life…. That’s a great story… thanks for sharing. If I could offer a suggestion 91 octane is too high for these motors you could potentially burn a hole in your pistons. Just a suggestion. 87 is fine. Just use stabilized fuel if it has ethanol.

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Will do. I was thinking that the higher octane fuel contains less ethanol or would be healthier. I don’t know much about 2 strokes, but I do understand that some higher end cars require higher octane while some may or may not benefit and cause engine harm. I did research and I concluded whatever you can afford just use. I read someone say that the higher the octane the better for these old motors. Thanks for clearing this!

Bebe’s life…. If you can find recreational fuel would be better. It has no ethanol and is the correct octane 87. This would be ideal. Some premium fuels still have ethanol but the recreational fuel does not. Best of luck!

Were the plugs really wet when you had a look at them ? My guess is that residual fuel left in the line over Wnter had gone sour. Upon storage, people throw stabilizer in the tank, disconnect the fuel line and let the motor run dry. That's fine, but unless one also flushes the fuel line, plugging it back in Spring will first shoot stale and debris ridden fuel in the carb until good fuel is pumped through from the tank. You also might want to tell the owner about the risks of overthighning plugs. Regards !

Can you please tell me what the float height for my carb should be I have a 45hp Chrysler as well

Adjusting the float should only require it to be parallel to the carb housing when inverted. Also the float should not touch the bottom of the bowl.

I have a 45 hp as well and it has a reverse lock pull style lever and I was wondering if it will automatically engage/disengage with the remote controls or do I have to go to the back of the boat every time after I use reverse to unlock

I’m not sure. maybe someone else can answer your question in this thread. I would assume the controls would release the reverse lock when put in forward gear.

So I have gone as far as taking the motor off the transom mount and still nothing is there any way possible that you could get a picture or video of the reverse lock system in it’s entirety from them I’m at wits end trying to figure it out please help me if possible thank you

If the new fuel has 15% ethanol, please don't use that in that beautiful antique Chrysler, it will eventually blow a cylinder by running too lean because of less gas and more crap ie. ethanol.

Tony Bruno …. I told the owner to use recreational fuel if possible. If it’s not available in there area then use fuel stabilizer and a good quality TCW3 oil to protect the motor like Quicksilver synthetic. Thanks for watching & commenting.
