Poor Running 1962 5 hp Sea King diagnosis and Repair Part 1

The owner of this immaculate vintage 1962 Sea King is having problems getting it to run at WOT. He’s complaining that it bogs and dies when throttling up to full throttle. In this video I show how I diagnose the problem by the process of elimination first by checking and cleaning the plugs. Then doing a compression and spark test and finally removing, disassembling and cleaning the carburetor .

I picked up a 1976- 9.9 from a guy who works at a scrap yard in northern lower Michigan. He sets various motors aside for me and sends me pictures, then I decide if i want it or not. But anyway, I put two new coils on it as well as a set of points and condensers, rebuilt the carb and added a new fuel pump and fuel lines. I drained the lower unit and not a drop of water came out and actually, the fluid looked great but i changed it anyway. Best $75 motor ever! And its pretty damn fast and sounds mean as hell! @@LivetofishOutboardRepair I just realized my comment for your '62 Sea King didn't appear here but the wrong comment for another video did instead. I originally had commented on my getting the air silencer screw out through the high speed needle hole in the lower front area. I don't know what happened to it!

@americanlegendvintoutboard9485 …. If you need to order a new screw try www.marineengine.com and go to Evinrude, year and click on carburetor to get a parts list and drawing to find the screw you need.

Easy. If it's running with the choke out you knw it's a dirty carb issue. The carb settings to work from are low speed 1 1/4 out from closed and 1/2 turn out on high speed needle. Don't touch the carb cam. Pop fly wheel and check the ignition coils. If they are cracked they should be replaced. Any coil pre 1964 are bad unless they've been replaced. While your there clean and set the points. .020

@stankkwasny56… thanks for watching and your advice. I’ll confirm the high and low speed needle adjustments with the service manual but they sound right to me. This motor was well cared for and spark was very strong. I don’t feel the need to pop the flywheel at this point as long as the carb rebuild does the trick. Thanks for expertise. Let’s see in part two how the carb clean makes it run.

Those settings are starting points so they are not that critical. Alternating back and forth adjustments between the 2 needles will need to be done, once the engine is warmed-up.

Hi again, just curious about the type of grease to hold in needle bearings in the lower unit when replacing electric shift cable in 1963 Johnson 40 hp big twin electric shift. Is Vaseline OK? Thanks again! Dave.
