I think the closest you can get to that quality of tobacco today would be cigars. Real ones, not the gas station crap.

Russian cigarettes are probably the closest you can get to these old cigarettes. Most of them still do not contain additives. For example, they go out when you don't puff on them because they don't have the additive that keeps them burning. Likewise modern/western cigs are disgusting compared to them.

Steve, I had salmonella years ago from a similar situation. What I didn't know was that I had a small cut on one of my fingers and hours later, I was doing the trots and snots for three days. Was talking about this particular c ration with my grandpa (this was his favorite when he was in combat). He told me that he & his compatriots used to mix a little water with the cocoa beverage powder to make frosting for the cake 👌🏻 he also told me that mre also was joked to have stood for “meal returned by enemy”

Good God Steve, I cannot tell you how many of those beenie-weenie MCI's I have eaten back in the day. The fruit cake should still be good...NASA was using those to line the bottom of the Apollo spacecraft as heat shields, so they should last 30 years plus with no problem. And as someone who ate plenty of those back in the day, I can tell you that the Beanie Weenies were never fit for human consumption.

Everyone who was issued that meal was in the military during a time of peace. Does anyone else remember the Fuel Compressed Trioxane fuel bars ? I think they were also issued around this time period with your C Ration. I remember using them a few times during my time in the Army 1977-1982. I think there were three fuel bars in a pack, they were a light blue in color.

Too bad the beans n franks went bad that was one of my favorites. One way I learned to heat the entree was to put it back into the box unopened and set the box on fire and let it burn out. The entree heats up just right.

I smoke Lucky Strike. In the states they're sort of rare, I found them once in a tiny booth-like shop in Hermosa Beach, they were the old fashioned non-filter variety. The ones I buy here in Norway are standard filtered. I prefer those to Marlboros, Prince or any other brand except maybe Chesterfield or Camels.

Lucky Strike in Brazil comes in a brown paper case and it's marketed as an organic and natural blend similar from the old american ones. I used to really enjoy them when I was a smoker.
