Ate a few. The coffee was candied even in '71, but did the trick for a boost. Beefsteak had that juice & white nitrite paste on it as well. Jam & crackers every bit as composed as yours and also aided in powering down the canned meats whatever they were. Fruit was the big winner... as it would help pass all the other food stuffs in quick time. Toilet paper only kept your business off your hand & never took it off your rump! Miss the appetites i had in those days. nearly as much as the clarity of duty! Thank's for stirring the memories Steve... be glad you didn't get all the Government you paid for. -Former Recondo Sgt. I have probably eaten thousands of Army C Rats as we used to call them. The one thing you notice if you have watched this site on modern rations is how much more food you get today than back in my time in the Vietnam Era. We sometimes would only get two a day and sometimes one. Some of the entrees were awful, you could not trade them to anyone. If you got the canned fruit that was one of the best to get. They always tasted much better heated and those beef slices we used to eat on the crackers. That candy bar was called the John Wayne bar as it was so hard only he could eat them. Most of the rations we had were usually ten years old as stock was rotated. I have had the MRE's of today and they are like gourmet food to what we had in this video. But every generation usually has better food than the previous one. Now I see why we were so much thinner than troops of today! Later in life I was opening a can of Alpo for my dog and when I looked in to the can it reminded me of the C Ration beef slices and we always joked in the service it was dog food! Thanks for your videos.

My dad used to take these on camping and fishing trips, when I was a kid back in the early to mid seventies, I can say the beefsteak tasted like the beefstick sausage form Hickory Farms, it was my dads fav MCI, my mom would want all the coffee, and my dad wanted the cigarettes, and my sister and I would fight over the peanut butter, if there was any. the C-rations were a treat on family camping trips. thanks for the upload.

the cardboard box is designed to burn slowly using it as a way to heat the beef slices. It never worked that well. The worst "C" Ration meal was Ham and Lima Beans which were dreadful. The best combination was sliced peaches and pound cake. I lived on "C" rations for 10 months. Many letters were written home requesting Tabasco Sauce which masked the poor flavor of some of the "C"'s. This caused Tabasco to be included in today's MRE's.

Never got another Beefsteak, but decided it was my favorite C. Made a hobo stove out of a perforated crackers/candy can by punching many holes with the John Wayne opener. Lit off the Trioxane fuel heating tab and boiled water for coffee in my butt cup. Don't smoke, so I traded the Marlboros for another chocolate disc. Fun memories from Phase 2 Boot Camp.

Not really all that incredible- sugar is actually a natural anti-bacterial agent (why honey is a natural anti-septic) and jams are also naturally very condensed. For a military ration, it'd be condensed even further, to ensure long-term stability. I'm more surprised those biscuits held up.

Your metric for what constitutes an interesting hobby is frighteningly low. Did you check out the guy who watches grass grow? It's intriguing that someone would want to open up and sometimes sample food that has gone off. I'm here for the shock value the day this guy loses his cookies over some rancid shit he had to try. C ration chunks, NICE!

this is a really cool and fascinating way to explore a particular part of history. you're a braver man than I. haha I especially love that you have a calm demeanor that is kind of no-nonsense. that's a rare thing on youtube these days.

Cigarettes and coffee back in the day was pretty much all there really was. It was the national pass time, you had your cigarettes and a coffee.
