I didnt realize the still made these in 1980. I thought the Escort replaced it by then.

When they get rearened hard the has tanks bust and usually catch fire but thats not the worst problem.The most serious problem is the doors tend to jam and its hard to fit out the window.I was fixing up one I was about to put a intake that allows 4 motorcycle carbs and a fuel cell but I traded it and my cavalier for a nice 88 Monte Carlo LS with the euro front and a healthy 305 that was nicely painted orange with chrome parts

Drop a 302 over in there and a C6, paint it and put on some nice wheels. Result: nice car. My wife had a 1980 Pinto when we were married. We still got it in storage now. My plans are the above for ours.

The gas tank won't ignite. That was an issue for only the first 4 years of the Pinto's life I believe. I definetly know that the model you have here is too late for that issue as it had been long corrected by the time the styling was updated.

thet added a safety plate thats all,The main prob wasn't the gas tank on fire it was that being a uni-bodied car once hit in the rear both doors jammed so if it did catch fire you were screwed.I'm only 21 and still like them I had a 76 2.3 4 speed and it was fast till you got up to like 75mph but it was fun doing burnouts and banging the gears it would almost chirp 4th

Not on an 80 model. Gas tank problem was fixed years before the 80. No problem with doors jambing and I have climbed through the windows before. Windows are just as big or bigger than other cars. We drove that 80 Pinto for several years and it has over 200,000 miles on it. Good solid car and very reliable. Ford made a good one with the Pinto. You can get an Offenhauser 4bbl intake, headers and other speed parts for the 2300. Our Pinto was pretty strong stock with a 2bbl back in the day.

I believe Ford discontinued the Pinto because of the public-relations fallout from the first few years' of the infamous crash issues. But the Escort (formerly exclusively overseas) replaced it.

First of all, I heard that it was a problem with all of them, that was one reason why Ford discontinued them. Second, it's not mine.

When the federal government mandated safety updates in the 70's for bumpers, Ford had to redesign the gas tanks so they could reinforce the rear bumpers; which was obviously a good thing seeing how there were multiple law suits against the first few year Pintos that ignited. Secondly, I can read and I know it's not yours. "The model you have here" refers to the video, not you personally owning it as obviously according to your description it's your uncles. No need to get all defensive about it.

You need to replace the door striker. I can hear that the plastic sheath is missing. The causes rattles and fatigues the sheet metal that it is bolted to. It will cause a very costly crack in the metal. It is an easy $ 9.99 fix in the help section of any auto part store. Once installed it must be aligned and he will find that the door closes like new and will not rattle.
