My parents had an early restored 2 stroke air cooled version as well as this v4 version. The 2 stroke version was a daily commuter car primarily and the v4 was used also as the family car on longer travels. As a kid I travelled in Norway, Sweden, Germany and in Denmark in this. I learned to drive in these cars in my pre teens. The free wheeling feature made it very easy to up and down shift for beginners. With my parents not around any more I can admit I 'stole' the v4 from my parents several times before I was 15 years old. It stopped however when I crashed the car into a field. The passenger and I was not hurt and we ran home through ditches with a police car searching for us. We were lucky in many ways. The v4 was repaired and served the family for several years. Later my parent bought a SAAB 900E sedan dual carbureted. It was not very practical with the access through a the narrow boot opening. The 900i hatchback was acquired a few years later instead. The engine was a pearl - it went on for more than 400.000 KM. Rust killed it eventually. I remember the 3rd gear as very flexible - overtaking on smaller roads was a joy (60 kph to 135). Very useful in the Scandinavian twisty roads. R.I.P SAAB

Jesper Albeck-Madsen WOW- I didn’t know that any of the two-strokes were air cooled! I remember the roller-blind to block off airflow to the radiator in cold weather... Such neat cars, I still have my 1993 900 Turbo Commemorative Edition...

The freewheel was to protect the 2-stroke engines. When changing down gears, on engine brake, the engine would rev high but only fuel being injected at idle speed rate. 2-strokes needed oil in the fuel for lubrication, high revs on idle fuel injection meant the engine was starved of oil, leading to seizure. There was no need for freewheel in the V-4.

I had a Saab 96 back in the mid 70,s and it had the freewheel, you could engage it or disengage. That was in snow country, great little car, never got stuck in snow.

I owned 3 Saabs, the first was 1968 96, got it when I was a senior in high schol in 1977. Then two 95 wagons, 1970 & 72 in the early 80's, I totaled the 70 95 and put it's motor into the 72, got a total of over 200K miles out of that V4. Went to many a Grateful Dead shows touring in my Saabs. I've been looking for one again to have when I retire in Vermont. Bonneville Vermont was once know as Saab City USA, there were dozens in a very small town.

This video gave me mixed feelings. Fabulous enjoyment on the one hand, and a sad nostalgia on the other. Here in the UK I had two 96s in the 70s, then a 99, - cars which have never been beaten for strength, innovation, and just plain FUN! - but I never had the heart to buy a GM-based SAAB. My grandfather had a 1968 Deluxe V4 with the round headlamps and earlier front mesh grille which l preferred. Saab changed the front to rectangle headlamps in 1969 model. I had a 1974 model with the black plastic front grille. The V4 engine sound was so distinctive! Great cars

I'm from Finnish Lapland, we had two of these as our field cars in early 90's. I fell in love with Saab back then, just so much fun to go to my grandma's to race up and down the forest roads in the 96. There were four of us cousins, the older two bought the first 96 to drive around the private roads and us younger couple bought the second one for spares, just to get included. Haven't driven these bastards since my early teens, but I imagine doing 80km/h in one of these would still seem crazy fast.

Lou Costabile In 60s Saab was great rally car especially in Lapland winter rally, where roads were narrow and with high snow banks. Saab has round corners so it doesnt ”bite in” the snow bank, but goes like in bobsled track.

I had a 1971 96 for eleven years. It had transmission problems. I had to drive it once from Spain to Germany without the ability to shift out of first gear. I actually had to start it in gear; second only, and could then shift down as I speeded up. Quite an experience! The transmission seized up on May 18, 1980 on the freeway a few miles out of town. My neighbor stopped to help me out and told me the Mt St. Helens had just exploded that morning (about 60 miles away). Not a day anyone in SW Washington will ever forget. Two disasters in one day!

Very envious of this guy's car, I owned several 96's, both were the 3 cylinder two strokes, but I did have a model 95 station wagon that had the V-4. That V-4 by the way had been used in Clark forklifts as well. A V-6 version of that engine found it's way into production Mercury Capri's and I think the Pinto ll. Some even have stuffed the V-6 into the 96!! No timing chain, but a fiber gear running between the crank and camshaft. A wonderful engine to work on. I'd snap one of these 96's up in a heartbeat if I could find one

They're a blast to drive. Not especially fast, but they handle and maneuver great, and hold the road like an abalone at low tide! And theft-proof! Nobody drives manuals any more, and almost nobody under sixty has ever seen a column shift stick.

Andrew Graham No, Saab's demise could be attributed to the fact that the brand never grew beyond its small traditional buyer base to get the new customers it needed. Thus, they could never afford to keep their cars fully up to date and competitive. Until the GM era, Saab had produced only 3 different basic vehicle platforms in its then-40-year life (92/93/95/96, 99/90/900, and 9000). And never in that time could they afford to do their own engineering, with DKW two-stroke engines to begin with, Ford V4s, Triumph engines as the basis for their B/H-Series engines, and shared Fiat architecture under the 9000. For as small as Saab was, they really were creative, unique, and innovative in many ways, but mostly only in ways that made their vehicles more difficult and expensive to make. That's why they had to sell out to GM in the first place. A massively distracted GM didn't handle Saab very well to be sure. But Saab was in serious trouble before GM spent their first dime on Saab.

I had a drapery installation business when I had my Saab 96 a 76 model with the 4 cylinder engine. I could haul a 12 foot drapery rod in the 14' long car, the passenger seat in front could be removed, and I carried a big TV set in it. It was great in snow, but hard on clutches.

Good Video this man knows his Car , i lived for over 35 years in the WashingtonD.C. Metro Atea and there were 2 Saab 930s i used to see on the highway very regularly both had Custom Tags on them and both had attractive female drivers one Tag said Snaat and the other said Slaab i always got a smile when i saw them in the 1980s i dated a girl in Florida that had gotten a new 930 Convertible. from her parents and she was a Snott and a Slob

I had a 1972 96 V4. It was a fabulous car. However, the fibre balancer shaft shredded, and, after a full rebuild and stage-2 blueprinting, I was running it in on the original carb (a hopeless solex unit) prior to fitting a Weber unit, and there was a fuel leak - I am afraid I think it was the garage not clamping the fuel lines properly. I lost the car. It was almost rust free. This was in 1991 I think.

Wow, this car has a lot of nice upgrades from previous model 96s. My 1970 US version was very close as far as the basic car and powertrain. NOTHING went through ice and snow like this car. It was probably the slowest car on the road with it's 1.5 liter engine, but in winter, we ran when only 4 wheel drives could. I'm amazed they left the free wheeling in through to the end. Free wheeling helped when driving for long periods by reducing the number of times you had to shift. If you could shift this car the only vehicle harder to shift is an 18 wheeler. Very finicky clutch and shifter. Thanks for the memories!

I had a lady friend who owned one of these V-4 Saab 96's. There is no more stable car in snow and ice conditions. My Subaru AWD can't even compare. Saab really knew what they were doing, when they designed the 95 and 96 models, both 3 and 4 cylinder versions. A pity they are so vulnerable to rust. So few are left today.

Enjoyed your video. I had a 1968 two stroke and loved it and wished I still had it. One thing I liked about the free wheeling was being able to shift into second easily when making sharp turns. If I remember correctly I think the two cycle only had 40 hp and 850 cc displacement. Even so it was fun rallying in this car.

I personally grew up around these cars, and let me tell you, taking e.g. the '67 Monte Carlo (with it's wooden steering wheel!), or the 96 V4 out for a spin on narrow country gravel roads, or - better yet - the same roads covered in wintery snow, _no one_ had a ''snowball's'' chance of keeping up! These were _formidable_ rides, and the absolutely best cars I've ever driven! 💓 Thanks for sharing this Swedish gem!⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

UberLummox The front wheel drive was a great asset in handling. The 1959 BMC Mini had front wheel drive, perfecting it using constant velocity joints - they beat the SAABs hands down at the Monte Carlo Rally. I am not sure if SAAB went over to constant velocity joints. EDIT: SAAB adopted the same type of CVs as the Mini in the later 96s. The SAAB car here with he V-4 will have the Rzeppa/Birfield CV joints at the wheel hubs. The Rzeppa/Birfield CV joins were spherical and easily incorporated into a wheel hub. They used ball bearings to transmit the drive.

@@johnburns4017 I think SAAB won it's class in Monte Carlo in a certain year, I think around 1964 because they came out with their Monte Carlo model. Never had the front joints apart because I never had one go bad ever. Minis were certainly well ahead of their time. Nothing compared with that configuration until many years later as you most likely know. Good stuff.

@@UberLummox After the Mini, like cornering on rails, the flood of FWD came by other manufacturers. The Mini had the gearbox & diff in the sump. The mineral oils in 1959 were not up to it, with changes really needed at around 2.5 to 3,000 miles. Subsequently many Minis had rattly engines/gboxes through neglected oil change interval. Later oils were _vastly_ superior, especially the fully synthetics, with no detrimental effects. It was not the fist to mix engine and gbox oil but it was ahead of lubricants longevity at the time. They had to get assurances from Dunlop to make the required number of 10" tyres. Small car makers looked hard at the Mini - they had to as it offered superb packaging and handling. Fiat looked being the first with a successfully FWD with an end-on gbox using separate oils. They needed the car to be larger than the Mini to get it in, so they introduced the 128, the first successful end on gbox FWD car. The Mini came out of the 1956 Suez oil crisis, with BMC needing a small economical car. They did not want it to be like the 3 wheel bubblecars from Germany (BMW made one). Mini designers were told 4 wheels, 4 cylinders and the rest is yours. Hence why the Mini was a little _too_ small, but the designers (mainly Alex Issigonis) had about 80% of the car volume given over to luggage and people, a feat which no one has managed even today. And it gave superb mpg, one of its aims. The Mini is like the Tardus. Even Jay Leno says there is enough room in a 1959 Mini, and he is a _big_ man. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJKlanaghNKqjcU

@@UberLummox Monte Carlo Rally: 1962: SAAB 96 1963: SAAB 96 1964: Mini Cooper 1965: Mini Cooper 1966: This was the beginning of the end for the rally: Cooper 1st, Lotus Cortina 2nd and Coopers 3rd and 4th. All were disqualified on a trivial point for using non-dipping single filament quartz iodine bulbs in the headlamps, in place of the standard double filament dipping glass bulbs. This was a new reg unknown to the teams. A British Hillman Imp finishing 6th was disqualified for the same reason, who was an Irish lady, Rosemary Smith, winning the ladies class. In all, ten British cars were disqualified. British teams had five in the top six. The man finishing 5th, a Finn in a French Citroen, was given the title. He did not want to accept initially but pressure from Citroen made him do. 1967: Mini Cooper. After the 1966 anti British stance, the rally shot itself in the foot with interest declining rapidly after. Few want to know it today. Rosemary Smith, one of the top women drivers in the world at the time, said she would never enter the rally again unless the decision was reversed. She never.

I had a 1977 Saab 96 Super around 1980. It had 75 hp i Finland. We used to race a lot on the lake in our village in wintertime, and the 96 was quite competitive actually, but not as fun as the Beetle I had before or the Bmw 2002 after. I guess I never really learned to drive fast with the front wheel drive.

I remember seeiing quite a few of these Saab 96's when I was young. The 96 was imported until 1973 (I believe the bumper regulations taking effect around that time forced them to halt importation to the U.S.). Besides, Saab had introduced the 99 in 1969, and that became the better seller for the States. The 99, of course, evolved into the 900 in 1978.

I remember riding in one of these in Finland, im from Sweden myself, but we were visiting relatives in Finland at the time, it may have been around 1980 or even late 70´s i dont remember. I also remember the old 2 stroke Saabs as a kid, we actually used to call them Prutt-Saab which translates to Fart-Saab because of the spluttering farting sound they made LOL. Great cars the 96s, actually my first car was a grass green 96. Engine had a sudden oil leak and seized up, I swapped the engine out during the day and went to work at 4.30pm ready for my evening shift. Simply built like a brick shithouse, solid and extremely reliable V4 engines. My dad had one too from 1971 to 73 in Cyprus, we brought it back to the UK and he drove it there for another 4-5 years or so...never a problem. He did a Weber 40 carburetor swap which was a great move, nice increase in power and responsiveness....I like the 93s best, would be great to do a conversion on a 93 to a 1750cc or 1998cc V4 Taunus from a Ford Transit...Most of the rolling parts are the same I think.

They were not usual even in Sweden back in 1980... but my uncle had one exactly like this, they were "old cars" even if it was new and the most people bought Saab 900 and Volvo 240 1980! Pretty weird that they continued so long with the 96, the Saab 9000 came only 5 years later... hehe!!

I DO remember these cars as a kid, but never rode in one. I remember them in their two stroke versions, sputtering and smoking around town. The one thing I know about Saabs is that you need to relearn everything about how a car operates before you try to run a Saab....Most of the controls operate completely differently from "conventional cars".

engine also used in bobcat loaders. v-4 share commonality with ford of Germany v-6's.seen in ford rangers. Hold on to the plug wrench if you still have it, needed to change plugs. Worked on a bunch of them back in the day. Freewheeling does not disconnect the engine from the clutch. A freewheel is a clutch sprag.

Sweet looking Saab. I had a neighbour when I was a boy who had one like this, same basic shape, different shade of blue. The only other car that I know of that had a 4 on the tree manual shifting transmission was the Mercedes-Benz.

2:17 If the window had gone in behind the windshield, it certainly would have blown away. It goes up outside of course. The small triangular one is on the inside, when the window is raised. One more thing, the exhaust system is aftermarket 2" and sounds much better than original. I myself have owned over 50 SAAB 95/96 2-strokes and V4s and about 20 SAAB 99, 900, 9000, 9-3, 9 - 5 since the mid-70s. 😎👍

Don't Laugh at that lil' Spoiler!! My '73 model 96 would creep UP on it's Tip-Toes above 80 mph, because that uber-sleek aero body created a tad of Lift, while, of course, letting you get 40 mpg (well, with the Freewheeling, and Gravity Assist from The Green Mts. of VT). These cars had a very rich Rally History, winning many, many races against much more powerful cars because of their outstanding handling, especially in the dirt, mud, slush, snow and on ICE. Amazingly, I could go onto 'logging roads' around here in 'Mud Season' [which is betwixt Winter and Spring], something my Subaru Legacy Outback wouldn't do without getting very, firmly, StucK. I miss that wonderful old Saab, but, a friend was driving past Micheal Fox's estate, and put it into a stone wall avoiding the actor's straying sheep. Otherwise, I might well be still driving that car, 30 years later!

We had one of these believe it or not at Miami international Airport hangar and was modified and used to tow baggage trollies to the hangar area. This example was still Swedish, but eventually Sabb was purchased by GM and produced cars under GM all through the late 90's and 00's. Until it became defunct.

I remember seeing these years go. When I was growing up there was one in our small town, owned by a young couple who had a Saab (a 2 stroke) and an MGA. This was around 1959.They were considered to be "Bohemians" at the time. I can remember riding my bicycle past their house just to look at the weird "furrin" cars. I later owned a 71 Saab 99 and a 78 99 EMS. I loved my Saabs. Too bad they later decided to become over-priced "sports luxury" cars to compete with BMW and Mercedes and priced themselves out of my budget range. And then of course GM delivered the death blow. Sad.

I wonder if the V4 was noticeably not as smooth as an inline 4. It sounded nice though. I guess V4s weren't as popular as inline engines mainly due to more parts such as camshafts, therefore more complex and expensive to build?

yea, altho this saab was better in every way. zaz in the summer tends to overheat and in the winter its cold in the cabin usually cause fuel burning cabin heater broke very fast. not to mention it massive understeering when slippery.
