When I was still in high school what was taught to us was roughly the same as what was taught in middle school; fragments of shit that happened before or during the time this country was founded. While it is important that those parts of history are taught, there should be more focus on events like this, or shit that happened when our parents were our ages, rather than America's "origin story".

I worked in a funeral home for some time and elected to go through the medical field to become a medical examiner, instead. (Ik the medical has its faults as well. Don't get me wrong). I was 5 when the 80s started & Pepperidge Farm remembers. 😉 The one that disturbed me the most was the Preppy Killer. The reporting was really awful: they painted a teenage victim as a criminal, and his guilt was just insanely obvious and the abundant support was just disheartening (or "grody", which is 80's for gross). Media coverage of sex crimes in the 80's definitely reinforced the message that you would not only not be believed, but possibly implicated as a criminal if you do report it. It was also pretty eye opening to see these lifestyles. Great storytelling: I'm going to enjoy binge watching these.

Being born in 1970, I generally have fond, hazy memories of my initial, earth tone and nicotine saturated decade on the planet, conversely regarding the 80s as a massive bummer. 80s NYC-when and where I went to high school-was a time and place for which I do carry some inevitable nostalgia, batshit though the city was. The greater climate of the decade, in this land of ours, is something I generally recall as fairly grim. This video manages to capture and evoke both my current wistfulness and budding pessimism from that time. Bravo! Things weren't safety sealed prior to the Tylenol thing, which is so wild to recall. Like you bought a jar of brand new peanut butter, you unscrewed the lid, and there was just peanut butter there; no additional step. While I was aged out of the activity's demographic at that time, I seem to recall that hubbub greatly curtailed trick or treating for a couple of years. The Robert Chambers thing-along with things such as our semi-literate, anti-democratic former president (then just a local nuisance), and Bernie Goetz, who you discussed so well in your previous video-just triggers so many memories of that time in this town. It's one of those stories that just dominated the local TV news and tabloid papers, for what felt like an eternity. True story that ties in with other matters highlighted here: I went to high school with a girl who was effectively a Robert Chambers... fan? Groupie is a loaded term, but she would go to the courthouse during his trial, and would get into passionate arguments with people insisting upon his innocence. I believe she knew him, to some degree-likely having met him while underage drinking at one bar or another-and I think may have dated him, but that's neither here nor there (there would have been a four or five year age gap, if true, but it was the 80s, and 17 is the age of consent here anyway, and that's a whole other conversation). It was rather clear to most, however, that she wasn't really a friend of his, but someone who just wanted to be a part, however small, of all that media frenzy. When you mentioned the satanic panic at the video's top, my desire to keep things local had me hoping you'd go in on the Ricky Kasso, "say you love Satan" murder, but Richard Ramirez was a far bigger and ultimately more disturbing story. Also, he served as the most prominent boogeyman in galvanizing that, in hindsight, remarkably harmful moral/social hysteria. Anyway, I'm just typing nonsense as I do... Brilliant video, as always. One might think discussion of such troubling and/or infuriating topics couldn't also be so compelling and entertaining, but one would be wrong.

@@IntelexualMedia Hahaha... As I say, it's a loaded term. But, as you very well may have learned in your own research, there was a group of girls/young women who attended the trial and were part of the greater media circus surrounding the whole thing. The media characterized them as groupies (and as swooning/fawning, etc.), surely. The girl I'm referencing was part of that crew, but I can only speculate beyond that (and of course did and still do, WILDLY). The positively bonkers video of him popping the head off the Barbie doll, and making a sick joke about it, while hanging out with four or five girls in various states of undress, was shot while jury selection was underway for his trial. I'm reluctant to cast judgment on the young women involved-such things being best left to others with whom I can quietly agree (or not), and having been an idiot myself when in my late-teens-but it seemed that some were undeterred by the fact that he was a cruel and vicious murderer, or somehow unconvinced of same.

halfway through watching and i want to say i really appreciate your approach to true crime, doesn't feel exploitative and sensationalized like a lot of other true crime on here
