When I was still in high school what was taught to us was roughly the same as what was taught in middle school; fragments of shit that happened before or during the time this country was founded. While it is important that those parts of history are taught, there should be more focus on events like this, or shit that happened when our parents were our ages, rather than America's "origin story".

I swear, every friggin decade there ends up being one funeral home scandal like that - they find bodies everywhere, the crematorium is found to not be in working order (although it was fine at tri State, and to this day no one knows why he wasn’t cremating the bodies), or some other crazy shit. There was one a few years back there they found the corpses of like 14ish children were found in the ceiling of a funeral home. It’s always so perplexing.

I worked in a funeral home for some time and elected to go through the medical field to become a medical examiner, instead. (Ik the medical has its faults as well. Don't get me wrong). The truth is that funeral homes are business. Shady stuff happens all the time, unfortunately. If I could offer up one thing from experience, it would be for you not to be afraid to ask questions. When we are open to the conversations about death, it makes it harder for people to lie to you about their practices.

I was 5 when the 80s started & Pepperidge Farm remembers. 😉 The one that disturbed me the most was the Preppy Killer. The reporting was really awful: they painted a teenage victim as a criminal, and his guilt was just insanely obvious and the abundant support was just disheartening (or "grody", which is 80's for gross). Media coverage of sex crimes in the 80's definitely reinforced the message that you would not only not be believed, but possibly implicated as a criminal if you do report it. It was also pretty eye opening to see these lifestyles. Great storytelling: I'm going to enjoy binge watching these.

BRAVO! 👏🏽👏🏽♥️♥️ Majority of these true crime murders have had a movie made later on: the kidnapping of the baby by lifetime starring Keke Palmer, and the night stalker in the movie “The Little Things” starring Denzel Washington. I cackled at the lady who cheated in the Boston marathon & the lady from NC who married that murderer to stand up against the death penalty. The thirst for fame and attention was much different back then, LOL! 😂🤣 The stop & frisk foolishness in Boston was so uncalled for & they later find out that the yuppie killed his own wife. You did a great job with your 80's videos that was so interesting I even watched it when I was in the bus or the metro keep going I can't wait for the 90's series. By the way I'm french and a few days ago there was a movie about Carlina White story on tv that was starring Keke Palmer it was really touching and sad.

Excellent video. I love your style. Old news clips from the 80s always make me weirdly warm and nostalgic, which I know is weird coz they're all about horrible crimes lol

I remember that Carolina White case. Me and and my mom watched a lifetime movie about it. I think she mentioned my niece's dad is related to the woman who kidnapped Carolina. She said something along the lines of my niece's father family not liking her or that side of the family.

I heard the biological mother spent up all the trust money, and Carlina only deals with the biological father. There’s a thread about it on Lipstick Alley dated February 28th, 2011.

Being born in 1970, I generally have fond, hazy memories of my initial, earth tone and nicotine saturated decade on the planet, conversely regarding the 80s as a massive bummer. 80s NYC-when and where I went to high school-was a time and place for which I do carry some inevitable nostalgia, batshit though the city was. The greater climate of the decade, in this land of ours, is something I generally recall as fairly grim. This video manages to capture and evoke both my current wistfulness and budding pessimism from that time. Bravo! Things weren't safety sealed prior to the Tylenol thing, which is so wild to recall. Like you bought a jar of brand new peanut butter, you unscrewed the lid, and there was just peanut butter there; no additional step. While I was aged out of the activity's demographic at that time, I seem to recall that hubbub greatly curtailed trick or treating for a couple of years. The Robert Chambers thing-along with things such as our semi-literate, anti-democratic former president (then just a local nuisance), and Bernie Goetz, who you discussed so well in your previous video-just triggers so many memories of that time in this town. It's one of those stories that just dominated the local TV news and tabloid papers, for what felt like an eternity. True story that ties in with other matters highlighted here: I went to high school with a girl who was effectively a Robert Chambers... fan? Groupie is a loaded term, but she would go to the courthouse during his trial, and would get into passionate arguments with people insisting upon his innocence. I believe she knew him, to some degree-likely having met him while underage drinking at one bar or another-and I think may have dated him, but that's neither here nor there (there would have been a four or five year age gap, if true, but it was the 80s, and 17 is the age of consent here anyway, and that's a whole other conversation). It was rather clear to most, however, that she wasn't really a friend of his, but someone who just wanted to be a part, however small, of all that media frenzy. When you mentioned the satanic panic at the video's top, my desire to keep things local had me hoping you'd go in on the Ricky Kasso, "say you love Satan" murder, but Richard Ramirez was a far bigger and ultimately more disturbing story. Also, he served as the most prominent boogeyman in galvanizing that, in hindsight, remarkably harmful moral/social hysteria. Anyway, I'm just typing nonsense as I do... Brilliant video, as always. One might think discussion of such troubling and/or infuriating topics couldn't also be so compelling and entertaining, but one would be wrong.

@@IntelexualMedia Hahaha... As I say, it's a loaded term. But, as you very well may have learned in your own research, there was a group of girls/young women who attended the trial and were part of the greater media circus surrounding the whole thing. The media characterized them as groupies (and as swooning/fawning, etc.), surely. The girl I'm referencing was part of that crew, but I can only speculate beyond that (and of course did and still do, WILDLY). The positively bonkers video of him popping the head off the Barbie doll, and making a sick joke about it, while hanging out with four or five girls in various states of undress, was shot while jury selection was underway for his trial. I'm reluctant to cast judgment on the young women involved-such things being best left to others with whom I can quietly agree (or not), and having been an idiot myself when in my late-teens-but it seemed that some were undeterred by the fact that he was a cruel and vicious murderer, or somehow unconvinced of same.
