Actually happened, Sheffield was changing course every 90 seconds for the two previous days but had relaxed that just at time of attack. The captain wasn't present on the bridge and the Warfare Officer had summoned the Anti Air officer to Weapons control. And the assistant had gone to the toilet, so there was no command with eyes to see the attack or ears to hear the warnings, relying solely on Ops room RADAR which wasn't even functioning correctly. The Sheffield was at the back of a line of 3 Type 42 destroyers and the Argentines had been practicing exact attacks previously against their own Type 42 ships to work out exactly the angle to attack to be invisble to RADAR and knew it had no ECM counter measures. HMS Glasgow, the lead ship identified the attack and communicated to Sheffield but Sheffield ignored it suspecting it to be one of the many constant probing sorties by Mirage fighters to scout and shadow the task force. Glasgow fired chaff and turned, armed Sea Dart, and even the 45 gun to try to shoot down, called "Handbrake" code word for emergency maneuvers over HF and VHF radio but Sheffield didn't hear as it was using SCOT, a long range satellite communication which messed up the radios on board, to talk to Admiralty in London. The first anyone on the Sheffield knew was when the lookout saw the missile incoming, the ship didn't even have time to call "Brace, brace, brace." before it was struck. It seems to have been hit by a missile that either didn't function, or did function but only partially, or for some reason functioned correctly but caused less damage. Even through all these mistakes the ship would probably have survived if not for more bad luck, the Exocet had 60% of its fuel left when it hit, fuel which ignited anything flammable inside the ship, and worst luck of all, of everywhere the missile could have hit side on, it happened to hit at the exact height and level that the main water pump was on, which burst the pipe, causing internal flooding and preventing the hoses from working for fire control. Harriers were scrambled from Invincible but sadly failed to locate the Super Etendards. Drastic loss of life due to poor equipment, bad leadership, lack of training, and worst of all, bad luck.

Im new to all your videos, I don't play DCS but being from a military family I find them on the whole entertaining, This one however was a hard one for me to watch, My brother served on HMS Sheffield during the Falklands war. It wasn't until the day (some weeks following the sinking of the ship) we headed off to Brize Norton for the ships companies return that we found out he was alive, and not as we had been informed dead, as a young lad, I don't think I have ever seen so much emotion, upset, grief and despair, followed by tears of joy and relief for the lucky families who got to see their loved ones walk of the steps of the plane, all in one place. It was seeing my older brother stood there, in ill fitting bits of uniform that he had been given by crews of ships that picked them up after abandoning ship (given to him because his had been burnt off of him, including his boots that melted to the white hot decks while they tried desperately to fight the many fires that had broken out}, that it truly sank in he was coming home. My brother tried to be his jokey self with me, but even as a young teenager I could tell something wasn't right with him, and growing up in a small family home, and having to share a room with my brother, the screams and shouting coming from his nightmare filled nights I will never forget. Still none of this deterred me, and in a few short years I joined the Royal Navy myself, I served for 10 years, and did my bit in the straights of Hurmuz during the late 80's and then again during the 1st Gulf War. I don't think our mum slept much from the 80's onwards! Pleased to say we are both still going strong. but to bring things back into focus, the crew of HMS Sheffield had only 3 seconds notice of the impact from the time the missile was visually sighted, they only just managed to get the "Brace Brace Brace" announcement out over the ships tannoy system as it struck. the ships own Electronic Warfare equipment was unable to detect the Exocet, as the India band was effectively being jammed by its own satellite communications system, a hard lesson for us to learn. Just wanted to share that with you, and whilst I as many others have enjoyed the video, I will always remember and respect those souls that are still on a silent patrol off the shores of the Falkland islands, who will never come home. Thanks.

OPEN Source: Radar horizon from a Type 42 versus sea skimmer not that far, the Radar Warning Receiver (like what the DCS planes use) that should have picked up the exocet was interfered with because of Sheffield's use of Satellite Comms being used at just the wrong moment. Shinny Sheff's sister ship (HMS Glasgow) did get the radar & RWR warnings, but was powerless to do anything about it. Remember 1982 is nearer in time to D Day than today's ships & missiles, so many of todays clever self defense weapons were not available - but good use was made of soft kill measures (chaff etc) n other incidents.

The assymetrical load out was due to two factors: the Argentinians didn't have many Exocets, I believe a total of 8 in inventory. One per plane they maximized the chances of one hitting. The second factor was due to the fact the Exocet were very heavy, this they needed something heavy on the other wing to balance it out during takeoff. Better carry fuel than another bomb to those really long distances.

only 5 air to ship Exocet were delivered to Argentina, when the conflict started the French technical team was pulled back to France before they could finish pairing the missiles with the Super Etendards (Argentine techs figured out on their own how to pair them and were able to used them). Also, Argentina did have surface to surface Exocets in their ships and actually they took 2 from a ship and adapted it on top of a lorry, hooked it to a RASIT radar and succesfully launched it against HMS Glamorgan.

Actually the Super Étendard could only carry one Exocet due to the weight of the missle. So even if Argentina had more missiles available they could not carry two at the same time.

Remember that they wer fliying very low (8 mts form sea level) for not being detected by the special radar of the Seffield (remember that sheffield was spewcialized in air defense with a high power radar). To avoid this, the Argentine Navy practiced with oour own type 42 frigates, developing a method called "pecking the lobe". They just flight as high as the ship radar lobe (limited by the curve of the earth) permitted. Ijn certain instances, they nedded to go a litle upper to update telemetry info for the misile. The studies for calculating the lobe range was also made with an University in Argentina. Morover, remember that we only received 5 exocets without codes, and we developed here the system talking between plane and misile. Finally, Have you heard of ITB (AKA inslatacion de tiro berreta) developed by the Argentine Navy to launch naval exocet from land??

The report of the board of inquiry into the loss of the Sheffield, which declassified in 2017 reveals the full reasons why the ship was completely unprepared for the attack. The board found that two officers were guilty of negligence, but they escaped courts martial and did not face disciplinary action, apparently in order to avoid undermining the euphoria that gripped much of the UK at the end of the war. Marked “Secret - UK Eyes Bravo”, the full, uncensored report shows: Some members of the crew were “bored and a little frustrated by inactivity” and the ship was “not fully prepared” for an attack. The anti-air warfare officer had left the ship’s operations room and was having a coffee in the wardroom when the Argentinian navy launched the attack, while his assistant had left “to visit the heads” (relieve himself). The radar on board the ship that could have detected incoming Super Étendard fighter aircraft had been blanked out by a transmission being made to another vessel. When a nearby ship, HMS Glasgow, did spot the approaching aircraft, the principal warfare officer in the Sheffield’s ops room failed to react, “partly through inexperience, but more importantly from inadequacy”. The anti-air warfare officer was recalled to the ops room, but did not believe the Sheffield was within range of Argentina’s Super Étendard aircraft that carried the missiles. When the incoming missiles came into view, officers on the bridge were “mesmerised” by the sight and did not broadcast a warning to the ship’s company. While the ship’s company were aware of the threat posed by Exocet missiles, some appear to have thought the Sheffield was beyond the range of the Super Étendard aircraft, because they were unaware the planes could refuel in mid-air. Nobody called the captain. His ship did not go to “action stations”, did not fire off any clouds of chaff in an attempt to deflect the Exocets, and did not turn towards the incoming missiles in order to narrow the Sheffield’s profile. Moreover, some of the ship’s weapons were unloaded and unmanned, and no attempt was made to shoot down the incoming missiles.

All that you say seems to me an unfair attempt to justify the success of the attack by disparaging the English sailors, when it is very clear to me that the French technology of the super etendard with the exocet missile was superior at that time. In fact, all the world's navies redid their protocols after those Argentine attacks in the Falklands War. 12 English ships were sunk or knocked out of action. Were all those sailors distracted too? Respect your sailors and the enemy when they surpass you in some aspect of the fight.

Historically, Exocet missiles had horrific warhead fusing that almost never worked, meaning that warheads almost never exploded, and the attack on HMS Sheffield was no different. The Exocets tended to do their damage by the kinetic effects of punching through ship hulls, and the dispersion and explosion of their unburned missile fuel. It’s a weird aspect of the Exocet’s usage in combat.
@timonsolus9 ай бұрын
In 2015, a UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) re-assessment of the attack concluded that the Exocet warhead did indeed detonate inside Sheffield - with the results supported by analysis using modern damage analysis tools not available in 1982, and evidence from weapon hits and trials conducted since the end of the Falklands campaign.

very nice vid... as a supernerd i have to point out some minimal mistakes: 1) That's an extremely Hot Rio Grande base considering it is located at Tierra del Fuego island and the historical date was mid autum XD 2) As you pointed, both SUE carried AM-39 with them, but no Matra Magic, In their AM-39 configuration the SUE had to remove cannons in order to accomodate electronics for the missile director, also needed to carry a big fuel tank to compensate the weight of the missile at takeoff, and couldn't carry AA missiles, since it was at the verge of max payload already, so correct loadout ingame should be 1 AM-39 + 1 large external fuel tank, no AA missiles and No cannon usage allowed. 3) Too bad CK-130 has USAF sprite and not the correct FAA sprite 4) pilots only exposed themselves above deck for a sweep, then they went back to the lowest altitude possible, and at last they would do the launch, breaking contact at minimum altitude. This was to avoid Sea Dart missile, a very capable missile for the time, that could only be countered by flying under radar. 5) According to british intelligence revealed decades later, both missiles were launched and also both missiles hit HMS Sheffield. Same goes for Attlantic Conveyor... 2 missiles were used on each strike and the last one was used in the controvertial attack on HMS Invincible

I don't remember clearly, they said in a documentary that Exoset needed also a data link pod something but I don't recall if it was on the other wing, or placed in the airplane... so was it the pod or the tank?
@christiandtorres98433 жыл бұрын
No pod needed. Just the missile and an external fuel tank, both for range and to compensate the loadout of each wing. The "data link" was part of the firing computer, it basically converted the info from the radar and any other Pilot imput into a firing solution for the missile the follow. It also allow getting info from external sources (another plane, ewacs radar, Pilot imput) but that feature was not working at that time. The pilots of the Sheffield mission actually check their radar and info imputs by flying close to each other and signaling by hand, to make sure they were aiming at the same Target and that their firing solution was right

The thing about the Sheffield was the light weight alloy superstructure. It burned like Grantham Towers. Very bright and very hot.
@alanrooney28873 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly from the time, the skin was so thin that the warhead did not detonate until on the way out the other side. It was the rocket motor itself that ignited the magnesium in the alloy (which was to save weight), which went up like a roman candle and was virtually impossible to extinguish. Another issue was the type 42 was shortened during its development to save money (it became roughly the same length as the the type 22 frigates), which moved the damage control centre closer to the centre of mass, where the missile ripped through, hindering co-ordination. It was a wake up call for the Royal Navy.
@MrWhiteladder613 жыл бұрын
I don't think the light weight alloy was a issue with the Type 42s, it was the Type 21's. Although the 42 were a very compromised design they were designed by RN naval architects and were mainly steel construction. The Type 21 were the first Royal Navy ships designed by commercial firms and although the Hulls was steel, the superstructure was aluminium. All the Type 21s lost, suffered severe structural failures from fire damage.
@simonolsen99953 жыл бұрын
@@MrWhiteladder61 I was 19 years old when it happened. I remember the horror I felt when I saw the images in the news, and instantly recognised it was burning exactly the same way as the magnesium ribbon we used to burn in science class in high school.
@MrWhiteladder613 жыл бұрын
@@simonolsen9995 Hi Simon but I double checked and the Type 42 were entirely constructed from steel. The only RN ship that had alloys were the Type 21 and that was only the superstructure, to save top weight, in fact every RN warship since the Falklands war have been steel because of the lessons learnt. When I did my damage control training in the Royal Navy(1989), most of the instructors at the fire school at HMS Raleigh were Falklands war vets and drummed into us the danger of fires.
@martinjefferson33953 жыл бұрын
Bit of a moot argument. Even if it was an ironclad battleship the exocet would have exploded with the same resultant deadly effect. Pre CWIS et al there was no effective defence against this missile at the disposal of the RN if taken by surprise.

Very nice graphics, but HMS Sheffield has the number D80 and not 46. And was hit on the starboard side, not the port side.

Love the humour in that the class of ship represent in this reenactment is a USA Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigate which would have had a phalanx. However, as rightly stated the British Type 42 guided missile destroyer would not have such a weapon. So it would have been a suprise if the Exocet had been shot down as it approached the ship.

@@amilcarcajadas2019 The U.K. did not declare war on Argentina and a 'State of War' did not exist between the two nations. Within the U.K. Government, the legal status was that of an 'Armed Conflict'. If war had officially been declared then the Argentinian mainland would have been a target. It may sound like semantics, but legally and militarily it made a huge difference as to how action was taken.
