How professional and clear the coverage was then with just Julian Wilson, Peter o'Sullivan, Richard Pitman (with Scu who must have been injured) and Lennard Martin doing the betting/results and that was it.

This is cracking. I relish these ‘extended’ vids. Thanks very much - subbed. The winner was so tough & talented.

A feat never to be repeated. I've met Michael Dickinson a few times and he has the aura of a genius.

I wonder why he went to USA. Perhaps the weather? The BBC is so good for coverage of these races .How on earth did they lose the Grand National to Channel Four and now ITV?
@seanscanlon90674 жыл бұрын
@Radley2612 He had gone training on the flat as private trainer to Robert Sangster at Manton but Sangster's older horses were with other trainers and Dickinson has a yard of two year olds that needed time and only had six winners, so Sangster ended his time there and that's when he went to America.

Richard Pitman is a great guy to listen too, as not only is he aware of the participants both jockey and horse but he is also very personable when discussing those involved in racing be it owners or otherwise. Enjoy listening to him.

Yes agree. I grew up watching and listening to Richard Pitman, Julian Wilson, and Peter O`Sullevan describe racing on BBC Grandstand. Do you know that in real life Richard Pitman a couple of years ago donated one of his kidneys to some-one not known to him who needed it to save his life!

Agree. Excellent commentator. Poor fellow, 1973 was not his year. Both the Gold Cup and National lost in the last few strides .Some onlookers blamed him for Crisp's defeat, they felt he was not fit enough. But Red Rum was a phenomenal horse.

The worse part of 1973 for Pitman was the fate that befell Killiney (killed in a Novice chase at Ascot) who had won the Sun Alliance Chase by 20 lengths, was unbeaten over fences, and the great Fred Winter stated that he was the best chaser he ever trained. When you consider the Top class horses like Lanzarote, Bula, Crisp, Pendil, The Dealer, Midnight Court that he trained that was quite a statement.

@@mervyncharter717 I agree Mervyn a very generous n modest man ,I was a big Fred winter fan and followed the stable for many years and ust to bet heavy on Fred's favourite s ridden by Richard n John F I wasn't married then 😁😁😁😁😁 my favourite was Killiney and when he died at Ascot I was upset for days n like wise Lanzarote too at Cheltenham. If only Richard had given Crisp a little breather at the 4th last it may have been a different result.?.?..but that's racing . U mention The Dealer a very nice horse do u know what happened to him ? Please...Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands

Such a wise man. Explaining how hard it is to get a horse to gold cup day. Let's remember that next time a popular horse pulls out of the big race due to the ground or injury.

Excellent ride. Bregawn was a wonderful horse: tough, consistent, and what an engine

i remember betting on Bregawn a few yrs later .It decided to turn round and run the wrong way after leading for ages.I gave up betting on horses.

How different things were then. Dickinson said that Christine feather had every right to be angry with him for not getting her horse fit enough to do himself justice in the gold cup. He said that silver buck was the best horse in the race but he hadn't got him fit enough! Such honesty.

Silver Buck best chaser of the 80s.

Love the Extended versions Eddie. Is this and Aiden O'Brien's 1,2,3, in the 2016 Arc the two best training performances in the N.H/Flat racing sphere ??

The genius of Fred Winter, O'Brian, Mullins, Henderson, Nicholls et al, never got close to this.

Amazingly Michael Dickinson could have trained the first six as Gay Spartan the 1978 king george vi chase winner was on the comeback trail and was instead run in the following race the Ritz club chase.

Pity Bradley turned out to be bent. At least the Gold Cup was 1 race where he would be trying.
@duncanholding7636 Жыл бұрын
I would never back a horse Bradley rode in the smaller races You never knew what he was going to do
