In a non-combat survival situation, you can usually build a fire - and are encouraged to, for hot food, signalling and just plain morale. That kit was included in the seat pan of ejection seats, along with many other items. It came down with you hanging from the parachute. In 99% of instances, it was never used because you'd be picked up by rescue forces soon after you landed. In fact, many jets weren't even equipped with it. None of the ones I flew did.

Pearl the rebel 1984 by george orwell is a political fiction novel set in a dystopian future where history as where as we know it has been erased by war, the thought police are a secret police whose job is to find and arrest all cases of individualism. The joke was mainly to point out the irony at the fact that there's a book known as 1984 and the fact that the MRE Emmy is showcasing happened to be made around in 1984.

The sorbitol may have broken down over the decades, which may have reduced the sweetness of the bars. Sorbitol has only half the sweetness of sucrose to start with- and also diuretic, laxative, and cathartic effects in excess. Yummy! Temperature affects taste. A quick proof of this is to drink Coke at room temperature and compare it to straight out of the fridge. A lot sweeter.

I had one of these from '64, absolutely delicious, the granola & cornflake bars were amazing, not gone off or stale at all, mine came with a fruitcake bar too which was seriously amazing ( I'm still on the hunt for more of those things), but the older Food Packet GP comes with a fudge bar, which 99.99999999% of the time goes entirely rancid and disgusting. As steve1989 says it's most likely the sorbitol that goes really rancid. Also like steve said in his review of the '62 variant is that the soup mix is sooo good, they must have dumbed down the newer soup broths because the early ones were so divine.
