I lived in Tecumseh when the track was being built. I met Howdy when he came to give a an inspirational talk to the convicts at Milan Prison. Great, humble guy. Bought an older Formula Ford, tore it down, and rebuilt it so he could learn how the cars worked.

The 1984 Michigan 500 race with a spectacular ending but not without the big hefty bill from wrecked race cars and injured drivers. This race was one of the greatest (of the 80s) and gruesome Michigan 500s to date. Mario Andretti had a dead spark plug early, then lost a lap. Then Mario got back his lap in the latter half of the race and eventually won it with Sneva breathing down his neck.

This Ganassi crash was the place where a carbon helmet was proven by Bill Simpson as the next safety innovation. Today, Ganassi and Simpson are partners in a football helmet manufacturing facility that makes racing-inspired helmets that are designed as safer helmets. And Mr. Olvey proved his proof that other motorsport rely on him. When V8 Supercars raced in Austin, Olvey was the official trackside medic. The big change in car design thinking came from high speed ovals.

With this being the official IndyCar YT channel, you'd thought they could've asked NBC (now their exclusive TV partner) for a cleaner Master Copy of this race.
@nascage4 жыл бұрын
Maybe NBC lost it due to careless misplacement or deliberate intentions from an unknown source. It always makes me wonder why the original network of any vintage race (IndyCar, NASCAR, etc) just doesn't upload the clear & original broadcast to KZbin for all of us to enjoy. 🤷🏻♂️

Oh Man! 😃!! This race had it ALL! Mario on the Pole (once again) AJ & Gordie coming back (once again) from injury to compete (once again) at a very level! 💪 The AJ & Penske camps go'n at it (once again) tooth & nail, in a super juicy He-said He-said battle! 😆 Too many God awful crashes to shake a x-ray machine at 😱 Mario takes off like rocket when the rag drops, only to have engine trouble (once again) & drop to the back, while AJ fires off dead last & starts marching to the lead! 😏 The crew gets Mario's car fixed & he then thunders back to the lead to engage in a battle to the death with "The Gas Man"! ☠️ Then Mario WINS 🏆 Sneava complains 😠 AJ receives a Standing ovation from the adoring crowd 👏👏👏 (once again) & MOST importantly, ALL the driver's involved in those terrible crashes made FULL RECOVERIES, or simply walked away uninjured! 👏😁👍 Let it be said, that on this day in 1984 at MIS, ALL was RIGHT in Indycar racing! What a GREAT RACE!! 💪🤠👍

Having IndyCars race at Michigan is completely insane. The cars go so bloody fast there that the least serious accident is usually a horrendous one- just look at Ganassi and Little Al's crash. It's amazing Ganassi wasn't killed. There is just no such thing as a minor accident when IndyCars race there.
