I didn't know that Bears, amassed 72 sacks in 84, if Im not wrong,It was the same number of sacks of the 85. I thought 85 was the récord,so,if it's correct as described above,this Bears were a dominant defense. Im a 49ers fan,and Its very interesting how History was made for my team, and a lot of respect for the Bears and coach Ditka. The battles in the trenches were brutal in the 80's,and even before. The toughest football ever played in those years. Thanks for uploading. Greetings everyone. And Goo niners!💪🏈😎

Yes the sack record was establish in 1984 by Bears with 72. They had 64 in 1985. The 1984 49ers are one of greatest teams of all time. First of only three 18-1 teams (with 1985 Bears and the 2007 Patriots)

The 49ers. Defensive plan was simple. Stop the run and make the Bears QB beat them by throwing the ball. He had to throw against one of the best, all around Defenses in the league. It is extremely difficult to execute against against that level of competition. And the final score was a perfect reflection of that.

@@Boman751 Walsh is certainly remembered as a pioneer with the West Coast offense, but he was not without fault. He nearly ruined the Niners by trying to force Young as the starter before he was ready. He was clearly wrong on that situation which led to he pre-mature retirement. Had Ditka has Joe Montana he would have won more.

Idk about best ever. Hard to say. Definitely a top 10 win of the 80s for them, possibly top 5 in my mind. The 89 team that crushed denver 55-10 was extremely impressive. Tough call, they had a lot of high quality performances
At one point they flashed on McMahon but if recall correctly he didn’t look much better than Fuller in the 1988 NFC Championship game, in fact the Bears traded him to the Eagles after that game. Finished his career with San Diego after Fouts had retired, of course.

The 1984 49ers were as dominant as a team as the Bears were in 1985. These 2 teams rank in the top 5 greatest teams of all time. They would have lost even with McMahon in 1984 but they would have scored.
@jonathansmith32622 жыл бұрын
@@theeusthenopteron6483 I agree. This Niners team is unfairly forgotten historically, I think because of how Marino captured the zeitgest in 1984 and the Bears (deservedly) captured the zeitgest in 1985. (And probably because that 1989 team came to stand for apex Montana-era Niners in cultural memory). The '84 Niners led the league in scoring defense and were second in scoring offense. This shutout with 9 sacks was not a fluke, nor was shutting down Marino in the Super Bowl. McMahon was good and a winner, but I think the idea that he flips a 23-0 game against the most balanced of all the Niners teams, is a stretch. And, I think, may be projecting the 85 Bears back in time a year. We'll never know, alas. Interesting to consider.

I disagree to any and all "ifs" McMahon most likely would have been carted off....this game was won by the NFL'S best defense. 227 points allowed in 16 games is dominant regardless of the "ifs" and who's. 475 points for. 227 points allowed...that's an average score of 30-14....15-1record ..only loss was to a Steelers unit that was good but that games got the bounces and breaks. They were on that day.
@Big.Deez19992 жыл бұрын
The 84’ 49ners dominated the NFL MVP in the Super Bowl following this game, and only gave up 227 points (fewest points that year) prior. In sacking Steve Fuller and containing Walter Payton for the entire game, what makes you think that Jim McMahon would’ve made a significant difference??? The 84’ 49ners were on another level of excellence until the 85’ Bears raised that bar.
