The pitcher Garvey hit that shot off of was HOF pitcher Lee Smith. He was and still is the all time saves leader on that team with 180 saves . I remember seeing him close out a game in 1983 when he beat my Phillies.

Congrats.....but do you realize what happened to us young Cub fans? We were traumatized...lol...congrats...honestly...but this hurt...really bad...the next game didn't help much either!!! LOFL...why was Game 5 not back in Wrigley? The Padres showed such balls in this series...the Cubs showed that they had them outgunned and the Padres just took in one game at a time.....and humiliated us Cubs...they deserved their win and we deserved to lose....I can't believe that I'm writing this but it's the truth...the Cubs still hung tough in Game 4 and 5..but the Padres jammed it in our asses......I admit that I hated the Padres and even the entire city of San Diego for years (yep...the whole city..lol) But now I've grown and give all the credit in the world for the Padres for NEVER giving up....you scumbags!!!LOL...congrats! Great city with great people too....I can't believe I'm admitting this!!....my Cubbies look good so far this year in 2016..maybe you San Diego folks could root for us? Maybe? LOFL

blade duffer, I remember our family watching that game together when I was only 10 years old. We are Cubs fans. Even as a young 10 year old at that time, I recall how stunned and unbelievable that home run was. I remember the Padres carrying Garvey off the field like a hero. Something you would only otherwise see in a movie. To this day, my mom can't stand to hear the name "Steve Garvey". LOL. I'm glad she and the rest of us can forget Steve Garvey now, along with Steve Bartman, the goat, the black cat, etc. Cubs finally won it.

Greatest clutch performance I've ever seen. In a must win game, Garvey was 4 for 5 that night, each hit delivering either a game-tieing or go-ahead run.

I remember this like it was yesterday. I was an 11 year old Orioles fan, growing up in MD, but my favorite player as a child was Garvey. I collected baseball cards (and the annual Topps sticker books) opening every pack in hopes of seeing a Steve Garvey card inside. I only watched the playoffs that year because of him, and was beside myself when he hit that home run! The image of him running the bases with his fist in the air will live forever in my memory. Years later while in the Navy in '92 I got to attend a 3 game Padres home series in The Murph. Sat on the 3rd base side right behind the dugout. My first MLB game ever, and I could just picture this moment while sitting there in the stadium where it happened.
@shenjingbing6021
@shenjingbing6021 5 ай бұрын
Wish you had been there for this game. The moment was indescribable. The Murph was packed. I was in the upper deck behind 1st base. When Garvey hit the home run it was louder than anything I'd experienced in a stadium. I literally could not hear myself scream over the crowd. I'm sure it was much louder on the field level near the dugout. What a moment.

From baseball-reference.com. Looks like borderline hall-of-famer at best. Which is probably why he isn't in already. Hall of Fame Statistics Black Ink (led the league in an "important" statistic) Garvey - 12 times, Average HOFer ≈ 27 Gray Ink (finished in top 10 in an "important" statistic) Garvey - 142 times, Average HOFer ≈ 144 Hall of Fame Monitor (point system that shows how likely -- not how deserving -- a player is of getting into HOF. 100 score = likely HOFer, 130 score = practically a cinch to get in) Garvey - 130, Likely HOFer ≈ 100 Hall of Fame Standards (point system based on overall career, not their peak; 50 = average HOFer, 100 = maximum score) Garvey - 32, Average HOFer ≈ 50 JAWS (player's career WAR averaged with his 7-year peak WAR) First Basemen: Garvey: 38.1 career WAR / 28.8 7yr-peak WAR / 33.4 JAWS Average HOF 1B: 66.8 career WAR / 42.7 7yr-peak WAR / 54.8 JAWS Of course, these stats and ratings don't include things like awards and postseason numbers. Garvey will probably get in at some point, but voters have probably been right to make him wait. Fool publicly expected to get in on the first ballot.

Hilarious! Mr Clean was way overrated, and turned out fairly dirty. The pro-Gravy comments here are absurd. Bottom line is that Garvey walked rarely, so despite his high BA, his OBP was weak, and for a 1B, his SLG was weak, thus his OBP was fairly ordinary. He was ordinary as a fielder, not in the same universe with the glove as Keith H, the literal gold standard at 1B back then
@alstoer1
@alstoer1 5 жыл бұрын
@@Jose_Hunters_EWF_Remixes Hmmm I'm going to disagree with you. Garvey did have 6 200 hit seasons. you get 200 hits you don't really need to walk a lot. I used to think Garvey's defense was average, but so many of his games are on youtube now, and when you watch him play 1B in enough games its clear he was an above average defender with very good hands. Agreed Hernandez basically redefined the position, but 3 of Garvey's 4 GG's were won before Hernandez was an every day player. Still Garvey was a very good defender. And Garvey's playoff numbers speak for themselves 338 playoff average with 550 slugging. He blows away Hernandez's playoff offense which is a paltry .265 average with 325 slugging.

The most amazing thing about Garvey’s hits were that the entire ballpark could hear the strength of how hard and precise he was when hitting the ball in this clip you can hear the sound of his bat cracking and splitting the wood . Phenomenal athlete. But unfortunately not a popular one. So many great things happened when Steve was in the Dodgers it was just assumed that someone this talented would be in the baseball hall of fame. You never know what happens maybe one day he might be his stats say he should be that’s all I know and in my heart that’s all that matters.

I will admit as a Cub fan who started following the Cubs in 1984 that Lee Smith is one of the least deserving players ever inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was a very good closer, but his stats are just barely good enough, IMO, to justify his inclusion in the Hall.

@@ynotttt No, 342 total members. 270 players. And why on Earth do you think the 'number can't keep increasing'? You do realize that every year, the number of players, including the number of great players, keeps increasing? MLB HOF actually has pretty restricted membership. In 2023, only 2 players were inducted, and that is no unusual. Some years, 5 or 6 players get in, some years, zero (as recently as 2021). MLB has been around for 150 years, and there have been over 20,000 players, and another 3000+ in the Negro leagues. That means less than 2 players per year are deemed worthy, and around 1% of the players. Your '100 players should be in' is arbitrary and not supported by facts. You are more than welcome to compose and publish your top 100 list, but to proclaim MLB HOF as 'watered down' because it does not subscribe to that arbitrary quota is nonsense.
@ynotttt
@ynotttt 11 ай бұрын
@@bauerj3398 ……350 is very close to 342. Why would you want to claim a Hall of Fame and let in all these ordinary entries. That’s what waters it down. People discussing the Hall of Fame don’t speak of guys like Dave Winfield, Andre Dawson and Fred McGriff….them as comparisons to allow more ordinary players in. This is what waters it’s value down. Having a finite number takes the politics and out. You have to toss someone out to allow a new entry in. That should be the debate of worthiness. I’ll concede the number doesn’t have to be 100…but they can’t go on doing this. It’s like impeachment of a president on nonsense [twice]…..now impeachment has no meaning anymore.

@@ynotttt 342 includes all of the non-players. Only 270 players, and if you want to categorize Winfield, Dawson, etc., as 'ordinary', that is certainly your prerogative. A most solitary view, though.
