The most underrated Grand Final in history. In an era where they were typically one-sided affairs, this Grand Final is far more intriguing given the amount of time both teams shared the lead. And for Essendon to overcome a 4-goal deficit as late as they did and in a Grand Final is even more remarkable.

Sheedy gave birth to the modern game and this final was a tactical masterclass. I was a baby myself when I started barracking for the baby Bombers but man, what a final and what a brilliant team! Forgot what a dirty player Dipper was! Anyway this was proper footy, Lou Richards and all! Really enjoyed watching a game I am sure would’ve been on the telly at my old’s house, but that I was too young to remember.

This was far better than ‘89, at least BOTH teams were in contention for the whole match. In 1989, after the first quarter, Geelong were barely in the contest UNTIL early into the last quarter.
@RestoreVFL-i9eАй бұрын
Yeah, cos nothing says "in contention" than trailing 9 goals to 3 halfway through the third quater. And nothing screams "great contest" than - after Hawthorn's early burst, the two teams combining for 8 goals in nearly two quarters. It was a fumbly, dogged affair with a brilliant last quarter.

I was 25 years old in 1984 and lived 10 minutes from Windy Hill. My best mate and I followed Essendon in the 70's, when the faces that appeared on the footy cards for the bombers were, Alan Noonan, Geoff Blenthyn, Daryl Gerlach, Robin Close, Ken "the racehorse" Fletcher (Capt) Neville Fields, whom we exchange for Terry and Neale Daniel, and our star centre half back, Barry Davis, who went to North (the dirty dog/traitor). Being pinned to the bottom of the ladder at the time, had its benefits as any win was like a grand final win. Solidarity ran across the board as everyone pitched in to save Footscray when they were struggling. Football was still our game, the working class. Local communities would gather each Saturday afternoon, and the old dears with their knitting would come for the reserves and warm up their vocal cords slagging off white maggots, ready for the firsts. In 1980 the baby bombers were hatched Kevin Sheedy was the mid-wife...he had them incubated somewhere. It was an exciting time. I remember in 1982 Essendon had lost the first seven games on the trot and were facing top of the table Collingwood at Waverly Park. I still vividly remember reading the team line up, and on paper at least, the bombers had a top side, so I took every bet I could on Essendon that week. My mate and I went to Waverly Park for the game. A record crowd of 77,000 saw the bombers cream Collingwood and go on to win 15 games straight (I won a tidy $100 even, not to be sneezed at in those days), only to drop the last game to Geelong, once again at Waverly Park, and with it went the double chance. The following week in the elimination final, Essendon fielded a team of the walking wounded. Simon Madden had a broken hand, for one, and Fitzroy disposed of us without to much trouble After the drubbing in the 1983 final , we felt sure that 84 was our year.......well up until quarter time of the 84 final. By the end of the day we didn't care if the world blew up, Essendon were premiers in the greatest comeback since Carlton Collingwood in 1970. I remember being at my Gran's in 1970 when half time scores were flashed across the TV in black and white, and Carlton was 44 points down. Everything was better back then. Corporate take over of football was opposed by football fans, and it has destroyed the game, cut the heart out of it. The introduction of more teams is solely a money making exercise, it has done nothing to improve the game. This is true of every facet of our lives, as the youth today have been shafted by an economic system in its death throes, and our inability to remove pyschopaths that refuse to relinquish power. The buck stops with "we the people". We need to take back control and above all, take back our humanity.

The season where Essendon. lost its first 6-7 games and won 15 in a row was 1981. In 1984 I was aged 29-30 and waited many years since the 1965 win and narrow 3 point loss in 1968 GF to arch enemy Carlton. I remember 1981 well coming just a few weeks after Neal Daniher won the early August game at Princes Park with a mark and late goal to record a 1 point win. I thought it might be our year then but as you correctly stated it was just another 3-year wait for that memorable gutsy effort with a 9 goal last quarter

Who would have thought 6 years later Collingwood was to beat Essendon in a grand final. All that good work by Melbourne in 1960 and 1964, St.Kilda in 1966, North Melbourne in 1977, Carlton in 1970, 1979 and 1981 was to be let down by the only team that lose in a grand final up to that date to the Colliwobbles.

Hawthorn by 83 points in the previous year's grand final and up by 23 points in the first quarter here. That is a 106 point margin in less than 5 quarters of grand final football. So 83 is not so much the record but rather 106 is, and maybe counting, if you like. The two grand finalists for the following year also.
