I knew Detroit RB Wilbert Montgomery and asked him once was there anyone he FEARED in his playing career? He thought for a moment and said " I don't know if I FEARED anyone but I certainly went out of my way to know where Wilbur Marshall was at all times because if a play was called to his side of the field? You just prayed someone would get to you before he did".... Now THAT'S a legacy!!

Detroit running back 😂. Dude he played 90% of his career with the Eagles and had 98% of his yards with the Eagles.

2:09 Even on grass, this a great play by # 34 Walter Payton. On dirt, it's incredible & might have saved a turnover or injured QB. This was # 80 Tim Wrightman breakout game. Drafted by the Bears in '82, signed with the USFL joined the Bears in time for '85. He & veteran Emery Morehead were an underrated combination at TE.

The '85 Bears: Had they resigned Buddy Ryan & Wilbur Marshall, and kept McMahon healthy - at least 2 more SB victories easy!

@GIL Favor In '86 the team went 14-2, had HFA for the playoffs and no QB...McMahon was hurt and Doug Flutie had been inserted by Ditka thinking that Flutie would save them from a predictable offense of Payton left, Payton right, incomplete pass, punt. It got them to the playoffs and the defense was actually statistically BETTER in '86 than in '85, but a lack of offense and QB health led to the end... In '87, Ditka insulted the team with comments about the scabs that started the season being "real Bears" and sided with ownership in that dispute...the end result was a team that was still good enough to win, but fighting amongst themselves and the coach; the season would be the last for greats such as Walter Payton, Gary Fencik (both of whom retired), Willie Gault (dealt to the Raiders), Wilber Marshall (signed as a free agent by the Redskins), and for all intents and purposes, Otis Wilson. The heart and soul of '85 was ripped out by Darryl Green's punt return for a TD that is an icon moment in NFL history... In '88, the Bears made the NFC title game for the 3rd time in the decade and 3rd time in 5 years...only to lose to San Francisco and Joe Montana (again, as they had in '84). The Bears 46 defense was great against the run and the deep pass, but it was vulnerable to short passes and quick throws (Montana and Marino handed them the most glaring losses) all along, but without standouts like Wilbur Marshall, Otis Wilson, and Gary Fencik, the '88 defense, while still good,. was no longer the same unit. HOFers like Hampton, Dent and Singletary were still good, but father time and attrition had run down the Bears window sooner than it should have...

It wasn't a matter of re-signing Buddy Ryan. He'd been the defensive coordinator since 1978, and he wanted to be a head coach. No possible way he would've remained with the Bears after Super Bowl XX.

I miss this era of football. You could hit QBs and receivers back then. There weren't celebrations after every play. The announcers were all business.

5'10" 173? I think you just described Anthony Carter of the Vikings. Payton was around 200.

This is the game where William "Refrigerator" Perry got his first two carries, gaining 4 yards. However, that footage is not in this video.

If they waited a year they could have drafted Marino in '83 instead of McMahon in 82. Took Willie Gault at #18, Marino went #27. Ifs are fun to ponder.

starting 16:16 - ref probably didn't call foul on defense on this play so as to collect his mafia money after the game . if that wasn't pass interference i don't know what the fu%k is ! Yeah, Chicago was the better team and i never saw Montana so pressured, frazzled, and sacked(8 times i think and one snap went through his hands and behind him on the baseball infield dirt ) . But several times chicago defensive backs got away with pass interference . these referees are mafioso ! no im not anti italian, I am Italian !

Infractions had to be blatant back then, totally different game from todays league. In these highlights alone there were at least 3 more plays where the 49ers could have gotten late hits & 1 tackle of Payton where he was already a couple steps out of bounds. Refs also wouldn't throw a PI flag if they felt the pass was uncatchable. The one to Rice was simply never going to be caught with the angle the defender had & the ball landing out of bounds. The other pass I would have thrown a flag on, even back then but overall I saw an equal amount of blown calls for both sides. Holding Montana/Rice to 3 points in candlestick is basically impossible but that Bears team was something else.
