Anytime I saw Georgetown lose it was a great night for college basketball. Hoosier here as well.

A different age of basketball without a 45 second shot clock you could compete and even Win in Big Games without depth.

I think the 1 thing everyone forgets about this game, it’s the last college game without a shot clock. Does this upset happen with a shot clock? We will never know
@robertsmith483110 ай бұрын
Big mistake by John Thompson allowing Villanova to hold the ball for last 2-3 minutes of first half to shorten this game. In second half Villanova just did not miss a shot, very shocking the game was as close as it was. But with a shot clock who knows? Both teams had great players but no depth.
@DavidHall-zo8eg7 ай бұрын
@robertsmith4831 Agreed... I would have pressured Villanova if I were Thompson when they tried to hold the ball like that. Harold Jensen was left wide open on all of those jump shots. If a team only shoots the ball 10 times in a half, that tells me they really can't score. Georgetown was too relaxed and didn't take it serious enough.
@DavidHall-zo8eg7 ай бұрын
@@robertsmith4831I believe they should have went man instead of zone when Villanova started hitting from the outside.
@robertsmith48317 ай бұрын
Probably so but Thompson just couldn’t adapt well to change. After shot clock and 3 pt put in place he couldn’t adapt quickly like Crum, Dean, Tark, coach k and Knight did.
@DavidHall-zo8eg7 ай бұрын
Thompson should have went man instead of zone against Villanova and pressured the ball when they tried to use the 4 corners offense to their advantage. Also I believe in change of pace on defense too, because Villanova was lowering them to sleep. Change of pace always works well against aggressive defense, such as the offense going slow makes the defense go slow. However, you should disguise your defense in a situation like this. Act relaxed on defense and then sneak up on them. Also Harold Jensen should not have been left wide open. He was a shooter, and someone should have denied him the ball. Don't play help off the shooter. Allow Pinkney to go 1 on 1 with Ewing.
@DavidHall-zo8eg7 ай бұрын
The game was more physical back then, and I would have used some physicality against Harold while he's playing off the ball to throw off his concentration when he gets a shot.

One of the greatest games ever. The refs, not so much. Watch 44:49, 1:39:38 and 1:56:41. What does it take for them to call a foul?

Barn/street ball was the Big East way. Fouls are for weaklings. LoL

Commentator: Why wasn't that cheap shot from Georgetown at the end of the first half called a foul? Ref: I didn't think it was intentional. Commentator: Uh, do you know what the word intentional means? Oh well, chock it up to Georgetown being Georgetown. My question is did that official say that with a straight face?

The rules were the same for both teams , you must attack the strategy of the opposition . Where was your intelligence? You got beat by a better team !! Villanova had experience against a big rough team in Memphis. You beat them by a bucket and 7 points during the year , hardly blowouts . Rollie knew how to beat you and his team responded.

@robertsmith48312 жыл бұрын
John Thompson was a great coach but he allowed them to slow game down and they did not miss shots. They were hot and very patient and did not miss. If there was a shot clock as great as Villanova starting 5 was in 1985 they would had not had enough depth to do what they did.
@paulsonj722 жыл бұрын
@@robertsmith4831 Hard telling. In the regular season they had lost 52-50 in OT and 57-50 ands those games were played with a :45 shot clock.
@robertsmith48312 жыл бұрын
Yeah really couldn’t understand the great upset talk. But do not see them being able to win 5-6 tournament games in a row with current rules. Had a solid program in one of the best conferences during this era though.
@DavidHall-zo8eg7 ай бұрын
@@paulsonj72True, but slowing down the game like this every time indicates that they couldn't actually beat them. Look at what St. Johns did to them that year. Pressure defense and not leaving shooters open would have changed the outcome. Villanova actually tried to run with Georgetown prior to this game and it didn't work because they didn't have the depth and athleticism outside of their starters.
@georgegisoldi33052 жыл бұрын
Intelligence? Why did Villanova beat you ? And a white player killed you down the stretch , how fitting . You were grinding the axe too much , excuses for rough tough play …. ( “we are not Jackie Robinson”) , maybe if you had a few white players you could have achieved further. But your in the hall of fame , and l bet your still grinding the axe.
