1985 Toyota van revival, abandoned for 11 Years! Can we get it running?

This 1985 Toyota Van that has been abandoned for 11 years. It was previously owned by a hoarder and full of trash. Can we get it cleaned up and running again?

I have two 1989 Toyota van, one for me and one for my son. The one I have has 336,+k and my son has 125k on it. Both van still are running strong, some people are interested some people follow me home and ask if it's for sale...few of this van are running, I'm lucky to have two of them...

As a former owner of 3 of these vans, I LOVED this video! Congrats on the deal! Glad it found its way to someone who can get her up and running again. If no one has mentioned it, for the engine cover, there is a strap on the B pillar that connects to the cover to hold it up. And, yes the tank has to be dropped to change pumps. Done that before, myself. Should have many good miles left on her. My longest was 295,000 miles. She was still running, but needed more work than it was worth to me, so I bought another Toyota van.

Yeah I was gonna mention the strap attached to the pillar along with the warning to not trust it. I had one break on me and nearly broke my arm when it fell on it. I made a new one with a seatbelt scrap and a heavy duty hook I fouund. This was 20 years ago I can't even imagine how brittle they would be now if they haven't already broken off.

Like most Toyotas of the day, it's so ugly it's interesting. I remember back in the day, a lot of immigrants drove these types of Van's. Also if you're familiar with King of the Hill the Souphanousinphone drove a similar-looking Van.

Yeah I can agree so ugly it's interesting my wife thinks it's definitely ugly lol though it has grown on her. I'll have to go look at King of the Hill again 😂

Hey! I noticed your post about the Toyovan, and apprecitate that you got this one going. I have a 1988 Toyovan, which I have had for about 10 years, and love this van! Unfortunately, had an electrical short the other day, and can't get anyone in the Atlanta area to work on it. Probably a loose wire, but I don't have your skills. Wish I did. I hate to have to let the van go, it always runs fantastic. Maybe, I will try to find anothe one.

@@ils360 Hey! Thanks for your response. I had some trouble getting back to your channel, my fault. I had the van towed to a station, and they replaced the fusible link, which is the only thing they could find, as they weren't really into spending much more time on it. That got everything working again, and the engine turning over, but it still won't start. I have checked all the fuses in the box, and nothing is burned. Thanks again, for replying, and any advice would be greatly appreciated! Dennis

The hoid prop is a strap that is located on the upper B Pillar behind the driver's door. Your computer is behind the interior on the same B Pillar. Transmission dipstick is in a compartment behind the front passenger seat under a metal cover if I remember correctly. There's also a separate container for rear wiper fluid on the right side rear when you lift the tailgate.

My hood prop strap was unfortunately broken but I purchased it a new one made from aluminum. Yep the transmission dipstick is in the little cover closest to the driver side behind the passenger seat That's where you also fill up the power steering fluid. And in the US the separate container was only during the first year of production after that both front and rear windshield is supplied from the rear tank that is in the passenger side rear hatch seal area

Let me correct myself first year of the passenger van and I believe it was in all years of the cargo van that they had two separate window washer tanks

Good video! I wish I had your expertise! I have a 1988 van, electrical short. All systems working, turns over but won't start. Just put in a new computer, didn't help. Advertising it on Facebook Marketplace (atlanta) for $1,500. Hate to let it go!

Does it have spark? Try spraying some starting fluid or carburetor cleaner in the intake and see if it fires. After you figure out whether you're missing spark or fuel it's pretty easy to figure out what it needs

@@ils360 Thanks! I have spark and fuel. I can't seem to find the intake, although I took the large rubber hose off that goes to the breather, and sprayed some starting fluid in there, but don't think it actuall made it to the engine. I don't know if I can remove an injector and try going that way? I have my owners manual, but it doesn't show where the intake is. Maybe, the injectors are clogged, but don't know how to clean those either. I think I hit a big chuckhole, and maybe knocked some rust or debris loose from the gas tank, which clogged something up. Just a theory.

@@denniscoburn6251 shut off after hitting a bump? Hmmm 🤔 I almost wonder if something didn't come unplugged. Do you share your fuel pump cycle when you turn the key on or turn it over? Hard to do I know have somebody turn it over with your ear near the open gas tank and see if you can hear a fuel pump.

Thanks again for replying to me! I checked the fuel pump and it was working and definitely pumping fuel to the intake, but still no start. Anyway, I have dedided to give up. I think the injectors may be clogged or need to be replaced, or something else that's too complicated for me. So, I am going to sell it for the best offer on Facebook marketplace. Sad, but time to move on. Thanks!

@@retro_88yota it is indeed tied to the AC system which doesn't currently work but I do have the correct refrigerant for it now so I'll have to give it a try here in a couple of weeks when I have the time

That's a good question if question we're gross I found quite a few gross things in there LOL but bizarre not sure. Maybe the homemade bed on the left side of the van that I didn't even know was there until I cleaned it out LOL 🤷🏼‍♂️

I owned an '85 & '86 VAN LE in the mid '90s. Loved those vans. Mine were 2wd. The '86 had every option, both had the fridge. They'd go in the snow when other vehicles couldn't.

Depends on what you're looking for. Interior parts and hard to find parts I get with people on Facebook or find them on eBay as far as maintenance parts pretty much everything is available in the store to some extent
