A mid-1980s car with circular headlights, five-digit odometer, and so on. This is like Japan's version of the Yugo. But then again, the Japanese have had their way of design and production.

I bought one of these new back in 1984 and it was heaven to drive compared to my 13 year old Land Rover that it replaced. I couldn’t stop driving the it for the first two years, it could beat the 4 litre ford falcons here in Australia at the time up to 80 km/h and I can remember on a road trip in some mountainous roads with sharp hair pin turns It absolutely flogged a top model Audi whose driver was really trying to race me. I think the Audis of the time were highly geared for autobahn conditions in those days. I could go into parking spaces sideways with the help of the handbrake and it got around 64mpg even when pushing it. I imagine that it would not have been safe in a crash as it’s only draw back was that it was too light as I discovered on a gravel road one day when I was driving on my own without any cargo it began to drift to the side of the road due to the camber of the road being a bit server. I still think it was about the best car I ever owned.

I had the same model but the factory CONVERTIBLE version. Note these cars had an air conditioning option but NEVER power steering. Your HVAC controls have been set to "recirculating", a setting that should almost never be used. Set it to fresh air and have the heater and aircontioning on at the same time, to dehumidify the air and clear windows of misting better. Also did you point out the 2 storage compartments, one under the lid on the top of the dashboard and the other hidden up underneath the top of the dash, both on the passenger, ie the left side of the car. The turbo models and the convertible all had fat tyres which made the steering rather heavy when parking. The turbo had alloy wheels standard while the cabrio had wide steel wheels. Both with 13 inch low profile tyres (I think the cabrio had slightly wider tyres), whereas the hatchbacks had higher profile 12 inch standard steel rims. I bought my 1986 convertible in 2008 and had it for 9 years as my daily driver, selling it late in 2017 having put 45,000 km onto it. It went past 99,999 km (60 thousand miles approx) soon after I bought it, and it was probably it's second or third time around that much anyway. I paid NZ $1,700 for mine and paid to have a new clutch and new camshaft belt put in. I did all basic maintenance myself, sparkplugs and oil changes and other minor things. When I sold it mine in late 2017, the engine was slightly noisier than it had originally been, but it went as good as when I'd first bought it, but the best price I could get was just NZ $1,100 and it had just passed a mandatory inspection, had excellent tyres, and 5 months car licence (= road tax paid) left to run. I used a cheap auto shop (not Turtle wax but other brands) treatment on the convertible roof once or twice a year and although garaged under cover, it was my daily driver for 8 of those 9 years, being parked outside work every day in the sun and rain. The vinyl roof looked old but was still 99.9% waterproof in all but the worst storm rain events. As New Zealand also drives on the "British" side of the road, like the Japanese, we get a lot of JDM imported vehicles here, usually imported at between 4 and 8 years old. My car had been imported into NZ when it was 8 years old, in 1994, and lived most of it's life up near Auckland, in NZ's North Island (a humid high rainfall climate, on the edge of subtropical). The owners I bought it from, bought it sight unseen and had it trucked and ferry-boated down to the South Island where it was a mechanic's wife's car for a year. My one had previously had NZ $1,200 of major rust repairs to the firewall, the undersills and the doors, as when they bought it, sight unseen, although it had supposeldly just passed an inspection. it was badly rusted in those areas and that is especially of concern in a convertible. Note my air conditioning still worked, but not at 100% eficiency, however it was still running the old "un-greenhouse friendly" refrigerant gas. Would have been better if I could have had it topped up, but for many years now, they only allow the new eco happy refrigerant gas, and to put new gas in old systems requires a full overhaul at about $2,000. Mine was the standard transmission which was 5 speed manual ("stick"), but a 3 speed semi-auto was also uncommonly available as well as the ultra-rare 4 speed manual stick with 7 speeds in all "Hypershift" transmission (an electronically engaged under-drive). I have some videos of my Honda cabrio and my parts car, on my KZbin channel.
